I've never fired a 150gr bullet thru my 30-06's. Actually that's a lie. One year I jimmed around with some loads so I was firing a 150, a 165, and a 180 all to the same point at 100 yards. Why I did it, I can't recall. So, I've never fired a 150 at game.
57grs IMR4350, Rem case, Cci LR primer, 165gr Rem Core Lokt. @2800fps. About as plain jane as you can get but its fetched everything I've ever sent it after.
I killed my first elk with an '06 and a 200gr NP bullet.

Over the years I've owned four 30-06s and NONE of them did their best with 150gr bullets.

I still have two of them and both prefer 165's

I am in the process of rebarreling my Rem700
so will have to start over....

I expect that the new standard weight 24" stainless barrel
will like the 165's as much as the 22" barrel that's comming off, but anything is possible....

My bolt rifle really likes the 165gr Nosler BT/AB in front of as much Reloader22 as I can make fit in the case.

My Semi-auto likes the same bullet in front of 49.5gr of IMR4064, but I'm working up a load for it with the 180gr Nosler partition protected point (the Semi does unpleasant things to exposed lead)

If I were restricted to 150gr bullets in the 30-06 I'd probably stick to partitions or Tipped TSX's, possibly the new Nosler.... but the jury is still out on that one.

I tend to stick to 165's in the 30-06, which after all is the
bullet weight the cartridge was designed for and 102years hasn't changed it much.

The really important thing to understand is that even if my rifle were consecutively serial numbered to yours there is no guarantee whatsoever that the two rifles would like the same loads.

I tried my damnedest to get my Dad's '06 to shoot the 150's, but it wasn't having any of that. I tried Sierra boat tail, Hornady Interlock, Nosler Ballistic Tip and Speer Hotcore (I think). None of them would shoot better than 2" at 100 yards, some over 3"! Needless to say he and I weren't happy, but an old box of Winchester 165gr Powerpoints would go into 1.5" easily, so that was the round he used for that season.

The following spring, I tried the 165gr Ballistic Tip and IMR 4350 (can't remember the weight charge, would need to check notes). Regardless, I got them to 2800 fps when they would consistently do under 1.25" and left it at that, that's plenty for big game hunting! Many a deer has bang-flopped to that round. I wished the 150gr would have shot nicely, but then realized I'm not giving up much trajectory at all by moving up to the 165gr.

Hi all,
I have a doosey for you!
Case = W-W once fired then Full length resized.
Primer = CCI LR BR
Powder = RL-19 @ 61 gr.
Bullet = Nosler BT
Cartridge OAL = 3.317" (.020" off lands)
Muzzle velosity = 2827 fps.

I know it is not the worlds fastest load but it seems to shoot well in many different rifles. My best group to date is a .450" cluster. This load has never gone over an inch if I am paying attn. to what I am doing.
I have used this in my Pre-64 Model 70 to kill deer from 25yds out to 343yds. This combo just drips with confidence.
Good luck, Doug

My former Sako did well with just about anything.
The rifle was too heavy though,, so I went and bought a Kimber.
It`s a little picky with the loads, but shoot really well with 55 grs IMR 4350 behind a 165grs TSX. Wink

Rusty,
try a Hornady 150 grain SST and (your choice of) H-414 or Win 760 at 59 grains or a bit more if your gun isn't showing pressure signs.

This load has killed a few deer and goats for me.

Velocity should run 3,000-3,100'/sec. I've had excellent results with ball powders in my M-70.

I use 49. gr of "OLD" 4895 under a 150 gr. Bronze point. Has worked well for me for over 40 years. This load is now considered "HOT" or at the top of the loading manuals. I've never had a problem with it in my guns. I bought 1000 150 gr. Bronze points back in the late 60's and still use them as my primary hunting bullet. For-runner of the plastic tipped rifle bullets of today. Probably not as acurate, but have served me well.

Currently loading for three all below with H4350. 150 gr MRX w 58 gr in pre 64 fwt; 168 TSX w 57 gr in pre 64 std ; and 180 gr partition w 56 gr in pre garcia finnbear (rifle has yet to shoot ANY BT bullet/powder I have tried). I think it does help for posters to give load data even though I agree each is like my daughters all a little different and that is a good thing. As always start low and work up.

Rusty, I'm amazed that it took this long for someone to mention the Ball powders... Thanks to Vapo, you now have all you need to know about the '06 and 150's. It's been WW 760 for me, but that is the virtual twin of H414.

I have no problem using 150s in my 30-06 - a sporterized Springfield with a 1944 vintage 24" 4-grove barrel. I wouldn't used them on anything larger than white-tail deer.

I have 2 loads I use with 150 grain Hornady SpirePt and CCI 200 primer. (Chronographed velocities - 3 shot groups.)

56.5 grains - W 760
100 yd group - 0.8"
Avg. vel - 2906 fps

59.0 grains - H 4350
100 yd group - 1.5"
200 yd group - 2.0"
Avg. vel - 2910 fps

Both these loads are lighter than the max load listed in my Hornady manual - but are max for my rifle.

Rusty,
Ditto the H4350 load of armadillo.
One of my 30-06's is dedicated to 150-grainers and will shoot bugholes with it:

RP brass, F210 primer, 59.0 grains of H4350, and about 2900 fps in my 22" barrel.

The trajectory closely matches the range-finding reticle of a Springfield Armory scope set up for 223 ballistics.

I am good to 600 yards if the wind lets up. Big Grin

My '06 just loves Sierra FB 150 spitzers over 51.5 of Varget (2950 FPS). It will throw them into 3/4 inch all day long. I dislike the bullets, but the gun disagrees with my choices. Until me and the gun can come to some sort of compromise on something else I am short on choices.

Thia load is basically the '06 version of a .308 load at 46 grains of Varget under a 150 that is very well recognized for accuracy. A little more or less powder, a shift to 165/168 grainers in either '06 or .308 with Varget is a very easy to work up load.

I have loaded for many rifles in the 06.
With any bullet weight a good powder is IMR-4350. But with the 150s other really good powders are RL-19 , IMR-4064 , H-414 , WIN-760.
You will have to work up your own charge weight as i am a lazy slob this morning and don,t feel like grabbing my book.

48 Grains of IMR4895, or 48 grains of WW748, on top of a 150 grain whatever, is the basic "military load, and works exceptionally well in auto rifles as well as bolt guns. A good accurate load, that has been proven over time on rifleranges all across America. Also it will flat knock a deer's "nose" in the dirt.

59 grains of MR-3100 with 150 grain Winchester Power Point bullets is what my Mannlicher-Schoenauer likes best. Velocity runs only 2700 fps (the origional velocity that made the .30'06 famous) but, my whitetail hunting range is at most 100 yards so I'm not really at a disadvantage.

I have loaded for at least a dozen 3006s over the years. All of them liked imr 4064 (usually 52 grains work up from 50) cci200 primers and a 150 gr bullet. Shoots into an inch sometimes less with most rifles.

My only "all weather" rifle is a SS Weatherby 30-06. I use 150 Gr. Nosler Partitions for deer and antelope (59 Gr 4831). For all elk and bear and boar, I use 180 Gr. Swift (54 Gr. 4350). From a practical point of view, I need no other rifle or loads. But desire can override practicality.
