I have 2 rifles that were giving what I consider mediocre accuracy. A Kimber Super America in 308Win and a new FN M70 FWT in 270Win. Both would consistently give about 1 1/2 inch groups off the bench at 100 yards with the best reloads I could assemble with non lead bullets since lead is banned in Calif. The Kimber has the additional handicap of having a short magazine so OAL of the cartridges is dictated by the mag length instead of the throat length.
The Tubbs system claims to help and for about $35.00 per rifle it seemed like it was worth a try.
With the Kimber I ran the entire sequence of 10 each of the 5 different abrasives. With the M70 I only shot 10 each #3(medium), 5 each #4 and 10 each of #5 (fine) compounds.
The results with the Kimber were interesting. The load that I had previously used would not shoot as good as it had before and I had to start load development all over but it resulted in a load that shot into 3/4 of an inch.
The M70 shot the load that had previously shot 1 1/2 groups into 3/4 inch which probably means I should have started with the #3 compound on the Kimber also.
Their instructions say to start with the #3 compund for barrels with acceptable accuracy so maybe I misunderstood what acceptable was.
Anyway this seemed to work out well and I have a 223 that I will try this on next.

Me too, I have a couple rifles that are hard to get the cooper out, and shoot about like yours. Let us know how the 223 works out.

Thanks for the info! I've been wondering about that system.....

At least now I need to try it on a rifle I've been considering rebarreling......and it may be just the polishing needed for a rough-bore shooter as well.

Cheers,

Dan

I used the final finish system on my 300 RUM and while I didn’t notice much gain in accuracy, it already shot well under MOA, I did notice that it cleans up extremely quickly now. Talking two or three patches and coming out clean as a whistle.

I used the Tub FF bullet system on my Rem 700 in 308 Win...similar results, accuracy was good as or a little better, but easier to keep clean of copper now.

NECO has had a similar system for many years. Tubb makes it easier.

I have used it on factory barrels that were on their last legs, accuracy-wise. I would only use it as a last resort on a barrel that would not attain acceptable accuracy by any other means. It does wear the throat and bore. IF you use it, be sure to measure your actual bore diameter before and during use of this type of system. Both WILL grow.

I've used the NECO kit on three rifles so far and have another three lined up for when the weather warms. Always a good result and I still have a ton of abrasive. Excellent value if you play with used guns or milsurps.

I had a difficult time finding a load for my CZ 550 Ultimate Hunting Rifle 300 Win Mag.About a 2 inch group was the best I could get out of it at 200 yards.OK,but I felt like it should do a little better than that.I was thinking about getting a custom barrel put on it,but before I did,I thought I'd give Tubb's Final Finish Bullet Kit a try.I was amazed,I could see my groups start to tighten up after the first five shots.By the time I got to the last bullets in the kit,I was shooting a 1 inch group at 200 yards. That was the best this rifle had ever done. The other day I finally made it back out to the range to try a few test loads to see how it would do.I think I'll stick with this one!

I did another rifle with Tubb's Finial Finish. It was a CZ 550 30/06.It shot OK,but I thought it should do a little better.I didn't use all the courser 1 and 2 bullets, they are the ones in the top two targets.Once I got to 3,4 and 5 I shot all ten into the middle and the two bottom targets. The one out of group on the bottom left target was a scope adjustment. This was at 100yds.Looks like she tightened right up.All I can say is,I've been very happy with the results I got.

It is nothing more than a break in system. it produces barrel wear, simple as that...Most all barrels shoot better as they wear..you can use the tubbs system or you can go practice with your gun and whatever ammo..it will probably take longer shooting standard ammo but the end results is the same....Some folks work at trying to save a barrel from wear not using abrasives to wear it out sooner...I have no opinnion on it, but see no need to shoot abrasives down one of my bores..Might if I had a cheap barrel or rough bore however..

FWIW, lead ammo for hunting won't be illegal in CA until 2019; lead ammo for target practice will still be legal.

Don't forget the caveat of lead free bullets required in the Condor zone.

What it is a lapping system using a bullet rather than a lap.
I bought an apparent clucker of a 1903 Springfield claimed to be a 30-06 with a rusty bore. Typical 50s Fajen sporter stock etc.
But it was a nickle steel action and bolt and had an as new 4.5-14 American Burris with the iris and mount from Leupold. All for $250 !
Got it, push a rod through it a few times and bore was mint except about 2" near the muzzle that showed light frosting. Put a 30-06 No-Go gauge in it and it fell into the chamber.
WTF ? Finally determined it was a well done conversion to 300 WinMag with a 43' Remington 4 grove bbl. Shot it as was and 5 in 1.5" wasn't bad. The got out my NECO firelapping kit (Brownells) and did 5 each with 800 and 1200 grit, cleaning between each shot. Took it home, gave it a serious cleaning with a nylon bristle brush, Hoppes and many patches. When patches came out light gray, back to range with 165 NBTs and 1 gr under max 4831 SSC. 4 groups of 5, worst was 1" (the last). Now I have a butt ugly rifle in 30 Caliber magnum (already have 5) that shoots as well as 95% of brand new high dollar commercial rifles.
Probably steal the scope and rings and resell the rest (with the target). A handy fella could fix the stock as there is enough wood for two stocks, get the gun reblued with a nice ramp front sight and be good to go with a nice semi-custom rifle.

As purchased:

I have enough projects !
