To be very precise, it was actually SW TX.
I'm originally from Wichita Falls so anything South of the Red is south to me lol. It was down around Ft. Stockton a dozen or so years ago. We flew in and I had no real idea where we were until after returnig home someone kinda showed me on a map.
Bag limit was two deer but after quota was filled we were allowed to murder all the hogs we saw. We saw a bunch. Smiler

Well, I grew up in Corpus. So Ft Stockton is WAY west TX to me. Uvalde is SW Tex. Smiler

But to stay on topic, a 270 OR '06 will work fine in either place!

Those were the two longest shots ever for me on deer. I didn't even own a laser range-finder then. I had worked up some loads with the HNDY 165 BT. Some were on the verge of hot, then backed down...anyway, both shots were heart/lungs......both went down before by scope cleared from recoil.

Hear in the states I would use the 30/06. You have a big selection of bullets for the 30/06.

This is the only reason the 06 is better. I like them both.

You can get the light bullets in .308, but you can't get the heavy bullets in .270. In comparable bullet weights, the '06 produces slightly higher velocities. But the '06 will ultimately manage a larger diameter, heavier bullet at the same velocities as the .270's heaviest bullets. For larger game, the '06 outperforms.

Hello 530W, actually when you get west of Junction the folks there start to consider it west Texas. Fort Stockton is deffinately west Texas. Anything south of San Antonio is "south Texas" just like anything north of the Blanco river is "Yankee" country! LOL
Have a good one.

To me Jack O'Connor's 270 is not enough when I want it to be enough and too much when I think I want something smaller.

308, 30-06 and 8x57 I use on everything, 25-06 I use on deer, antelope, and I would love to take one to Africa.

To me the 270 isn't as good as the 25-06 for what I use it for, and not as good as the bigger ones for what I use them for. It's an also ran.
