I am wrestling with the proper contour barrel for the 9.3 X 62 i am building on a Mauser action. My stock/action currently weighs about 4.5 lb. i am looking for an iron sighted rifle in the 8.5 lb area.

is a Shilen #3 to small for this caliber? i am leaning toward the #4 contour (.650) at the muzzle.

You'll get any number of opinions on this. Some people are willing to accept the drawbacks of using light barrel contours to stay light in weight. I personally think you need a contour that will give you at least .3" ( 2x .15")of wall thickness at muzzle. In the case of the 9.3, that would mean a muzzle contour of about .666".

Blaser (European rifle maker, European cartridge) use a muzzle contour of about .669" for their .366 cal barrels. My own .366 barrel has a muzzle contour of .748".

Lothar-Walther makes a pre-chambered and threaded 9.3x62 barrel that is about right where you want to be weight wise. These are very accurate in this caliber and look nice.

Mine is finished out at 21" and the rifle weighs about 8 1/4lbs. It's about a #3-4 contour.

Great piece of fiddle back. Is it Claro, Bastogne, English or Stained Maple? Oh, and I am really fond of Shilin's #5 contour on a 9 to 9 1/2 pound gun. Especially if it kicks. DW

I bought a 9.3x62 off Gunbroker that someone else had built, and I think the contour is a #5 Douglas, and it's 20" long. I'm glad I got a chance to shoot a rifle like that, because I wouldn't have ordered a barrel that beefy. Now that I've handled it and shot it, I really like the balance and the general feel of the rifle. I'm sure it helps that it's very accurate, which makes it a rifle that's easy to like. Actually it has changed the way I think about barrel contours anymore, so I no longer look at a few ounces as a liability, for most purposes.

I use a magnum sporter contour on a 24" barrel - Muzzle = 0.700".

It weighs 8¾ lbs with a light fixed 4X scope on it.

My custom FN project has a Heym tube at .670" crowned at 22" and feels very nice. My ZG-47 Brno original ahs a 23.6" tube and it is a bit lighter and also feels good.

I have an original Type B Oberndorf sporter in 9.3x62 and it is also 23.6" and about .650" md. It is superbly balanced, 73 years old and shoots Norma factory and my handloads into .65" at 100 M consistently. The old round WILL shoot!

My 9,3x62 has the Lothar Walther pre-chambered barrel with the #722 profile barrel left at 25"

http://www.lothar-walther.com/268.php

Everyone who has handled it comments on how well balanced it is. Remember there is a reasonable hole down the middle.

Muzzle is 0.650" which equates to your #4 contour.

Mine's stubby ..... 20". Can't see Code4's muzzle but a dead ringer for TC1's; Barrel Band Swivel & Front Sight.

Mine is also an LW prechcamber (see a trend starting here?)Ragged hole accurate with 232gr Oryx. Hung on an 09 Argy with a steel 1.5-6x42 scope and sporter stock it weighs 93/4lbs with a leather sling and 4 rounds. I wouldn't want to go lighter.

I'm about a month out from receiving a #3 PacNor (.625" muzzle at 24") and a McMillian Rem Sporter with Edge fill. I'll be using a lightened Rem 700 LA. It all goes to Chris Matthews of LongShot rifles. Soooo, hopefully by this Fall, I'll let you know if it's too light. tu2

Wow, I have a PAcNor #5 on my 404jeffery & thought it a bit heavy for that bigger bore. I woudl be fine w/ a 22"-23" 0.650 muzzle in the 9.3. I have a 1909 for a project rifle & the 9.3x62 would be a great choice.
