Good reasons for the 35 Whelen--

1) 35 caliber cast bullets can be easily paper-patched to .366".

2) 35 Whelen brass is less work than 30-06 to open up and fireform to 9.3 x 62.

9mm Makarov bullets serve the same purpose in the 9.3 x 62 that 38/357 bullets serve in the 35 Whelen.

At the time I bought my CZ-550 in 9.3 x 62, there were quite a few 35 Whelen M-77 Rugers available in their stainless/plastic stocked variant. I chose the CZ and 9.3 x 62 because I prefer rifles made of blue steel and walnut and there is a slight (and HIGHLY esoteric) ballistic advantage to the 9.3 x 62.

Both calibers serve the same niche as hunting cartridges, and I don't think the critter engaged with either cartridge could tell a difference between them. I also think the 35 Whelen A/I is the equal of the 9.3 x 62.

The 9.3 x 62 is my NASTY CRITTER rifle.

90gr maks over red dot or aa 5744 up to 320gr sp`s seems like 9.3 has something going for it,but like all else it`s what you like not what everyone else does that counts.I won`t feel under gunned with either in battle with man or beast so I guess their both winners, and I have to travel 200 miles just for bullets at this point in time and no one in that range has any loaded 9.3 x 62`s,hopefully times might change but who knows.

Carcano, yoe are right of course. My post was a simplification. I wanted to point out the different case capacity of the 9.3x62 versus 35 Whelen.

Starting out with the 06 case ( which is possible, if not the best way ), the 35 Whelen is necked up. The von Bock case is necked up, blown out and, IIRC, the shoulder is moved forward. So, it has ( slightly ) more case capacity. Given equal pressures the 9.3 is king, especially considering its bullets.

My elk rifle is Bigfoot Wallace, a custom '03 Springfield in .35 Brown-Whelen (the most radical form of tne Whelen.) This rifle will do anything a .338 Win Mag will do.

"Both have had their difficulties in obtaining suitable bullets, but you can get excellent bullets for the 9.3 at this time. I don't know about the .35."

The 225 grain Nosler Partition Jacket is all the bullet you need in the .35 Whelen (although I wouldn't argue with the 250 grain PJ.)

I have used both and I feel the 9.3x62 performs more in the 375 class than the 35 Whelen class with a 320 gr. bullet getting 2400 in my 26" barreled mod-54 and mod-70 winchesters.

I shoot bullets from 250 grs. to 320 grs in the 9.3x62...The great 9.3x64 will give you a couple of hundred more FSP with the lighter bullets and a hundred FPS more with the 320 Woodleigh...

If you use 06 brass for cases you will lose about 100 or so FPS in most guns.

My question is how many good bullets are out there for the 35 Whelen, the only one that ever worked well is the Woodleigh and now the new 225 gr. Nosler...Most of the 35 bullets were and are for the 35 Rem. and thats a disaster in the game fields.

The 35 Whelan is just as popular on this side of the pond as the 9.3x62 which is not well know to Mr. average American. However as a fact of life no 358 caliber has ever made a hit in the USA..

You probably cannot use this forum as a judge on what mainstream America likes, it is the African forum...

With proper loads both are grand calibers, but my preference goes to the 9.3x62 by a long shot. Loaded properly it is a better DGR round than the 35 Whelen, IMO...
