My father turned 83 this year.

He wanted a doe for camp meat, and some for the freezer.

His BAR (30-06) got knocked out of the scabbard in his jeep, jaring the scope, so he took the 300 Weatherby Magnum I gave him when he was a spry 70 years old.

One shot, one deer.

Should I get him a 25-06 when he turns 84?

Garrett

Get him a .257 Weatherby Magnum to match the .300 you gave him. He will LOVE it. thumb

I agree with the 257 WBY. I can't believe how mild the recoil is for such a high performance caliber. Lou

The 257 Wby would be the way to go.

.270 Weatherby is another nice option. Also a mild recoiling high performer.

Dontcha think every man should own at least one of either a .475 A&M or a .500 Weatherby in his life? Well, you can't do it any earlier.....

Just a brake for the 300, and then take the rest of $ and go hunting with him!

Thanks guys for all your input.

I think the 257 Weatherby is fine idea.

Fish, this particular rifle has a Gentry Muzzle brake on it that I had installed before I gave it to him. He took the rifle to Africa on a hunt with me (he was my guest), and did great on everything from impala to eland.

But, 84 years old and a 300 Weatherby?
He deserves a new rifle.

Garrett
(Maybe he'll give the 300 to me)

Why don't you ask him what he wants?

I think Bryan is on the right track.

If you get the old, "I've got all or just what I want.", twist the subject to ask, "What do you think the best Cartridge is to Kill a _______? Who's rifle did you ever see that really impressed you and what was it chambered for?"

And if you think his heart can take it, tell him some guys are bragging about using 22Hornets on Elk! Big Grin

It sure is nice to give a great gift to someone you care about. Makes both the giver and the reciepient happy.
