N. GarrettThe Old Man and the Weatherby
My father turned 83 this year.
He wanted a doe for camp meat, and some for the freezer.
His BAR (30-06) got knocked out of the scabbard in his jeep, jaring the scope, so he took the 300 Weatherby Magnum I gave him when he was a spry 70 years old.
One shot, one deer.
Should I get him a 25-06 when he turns 84?

jetdrvrNah. Get him a .416 Rigby. Sounds like he could handle it...

BuliwyfGet him a .257 Weatherby Magnum to match the .300 you gave him. He will LOVE it.

SDhunterI think I concur with the 257 Weatherby mag opinion.

Dr. LouI agree with the 257 WBY. I can't believe how mild the recoil is for such a high performance caliber. Lou

Alberta CanuckDontcha think every man should own at least one of either a .475 A&M or a .500 Weatherby in his life? Well, you can't do it any earlier.....
My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

Fish30114Just a brake for the 300, and then take the rest of $ and go hunting with him!

N. GarrettThanks guys for all your input.
I think the 257 Weatherby is fine idea.
Fish, this particular rifle has a Gentry Muzzle brake on it that I had installed before I gave it to him. He took the rifle to Africa on a hunt with me (he was my guest), and did great on everything from impala to eland.
But, 84 years old and a 300 Weatherby?
He deserves a new rifle.
Garrett
(Maybe he'll give the 300 to me)

Fish30114I like your thinking Garret, a new 257 it should be--and a hunt of course!

I think Bryan is on the right track.
If you get the old, "I've got all or just what I want.", twist the subject to ask, "What do you think the best Cartridge is to Kill a _______? Who's rifle did you ever see that really impressed you and what was it chambered for?"
And if you think his heart can take it, tell him some guys are bragging about using 22Hornets on Elk!
