What kind do or did you have.
How acurate is or was it, and any details you might think interesting.
I have a 1953 vintage featherweight model 70. Its no colectors item, but its a fine hunting rifle.
I would like to get another one.
there are many I would like to have , a savage 99 , would be great but folks want alot for a decent one.
If I get a bolt I like the hawkeye.
But I like remingtons to. That plain jane sps or what ever they call it is prety cheap, and ill bet shoots great.
In the past I have had a steyer a Ruger tang safty, remington 760 and probably acouple more are escaping the steel trap between my ears.
So tell me about yours...tj3006

My Midland 2100 was the first big game rifle I ever bought. I think sometime in the mid '70s, just before grad. Stupid thing hated factory rounds right from the beginning...no matter the brand. Some would go no more than 17 rds firing in a box, some less!! Took me about five or six boxes before I decided to start reloading! Never had a problem since. It likes 165 grs best, but will shoot 180s very nicely. With 44 grs 4064 the 165s will stay inside 2.5" at 200 yds, 180s inside 3". I don't know how many deer, whitetail and mulies, she has dumped, but has taken at least one deer every season since I got her. My wife now 'owns' it, and has accounted for half dozen whitetail bucks between 140 and 180"!!(All of these in the CWD area north west of Edgerton, AB.)[see CWD thread in Canadian forum]
My other 308 is a Ruger tang safety. She will only shoot 150 gr bullets! Everything else won't group inside 3' at 100 yds!
This Ruger is a good candidate for a re barrel....300 or 338RCM. Had thought about re barreling the 2100, but Momma says NO.
The Ruger has also taken her share of game. But with acquiring a Husky 9.3 x 62, and a 700Rem sendero in 300 RUM in a weighted Plaster stock, must weigh 15 lbs., w/a 3200 10x scope, I am afraid the 308s will be relegated to the back of the safe....especially since the wife no longer shoots. Shoulder and circulation problems put the kibosh on that.
Thomas I am with you on the Hawkeye...if it had a tang safety Smiler But I think my next rifle will be a Winchester 1876 clone.

a bit long, but there's LeRoy's 308 story...and then some!
OH YA.... I also hunt with a Shiloh Sharps #1 45 2.1!! BLACK POWDER ONLY Smiler

The rifle chambered in 308 that I own is a Blaser R-93 Tracker (19.75" barrel with sights). I haven't had it that long, but I have found the short barrel to be very accurate and extremely handy. I am currently loading 168 gr Nosler ballistic tips and 180 gr Accubonds, and both loads print the same at 100 yards (1" or under if I do my part).

My only .308 is a Ruger M77 flatbolt. I bought it the second year Ruger made it. I remember reading a magazine article about the rifle on my way to an anti-hunter Aunt's house for dinner and decided it was the rifle of my dreams!
I bought it without sights because reading Francis Sell's articles about hunting convinced me that I needed to use express sights. SO, I had a williams sight system installed with a gold bead and shallow "V". I use low scope mounts, with Leupold glass, and the rifle points like a shotgun!Everything it gets pointed at drops. Love it!
Anyway, I handload 150gr Hornadys with 4895, and it will shoot MOA at 100yds with that bullet. Does not like 165's.
This rifle goes with me on most hunting trips and has traveled to Newfoundland, Mississippi, Wyoming, Maine, and Vermont. It has accounted for all my deer, and a bear. I have accumulated a collection of centerfires, but when my time comes, it is in my will to be given to a good hunting buddy, and not sold.

The only 308 that I own is a left handed Remington 788 that I bought new in 1975. It probably has 8-10,000 rounds through it and the throat is gone for way over 1/8" but it will still put 3 bullets into less than an inch.

I hunted with a 308 Savage 99 this year. Like it very much but it won't handle hot loads or some milsurp (weak extractor).
I also have a couple FN Deluxes in 308 and a Mexican Mauser. When the new Winchester all-weather stainless M70 is available in 308 I plan to get one. FAL type semi-autos are cool too. I like the DSA SAR. A great round.

I have a pre-64 Winchester FWT. I bought in 1953. It has always been my favorite. It really likes 200 gr. Speer hot-cores. It's outfitted with an old Leupold 2-7. It is my "meat maker" I wouldn't part with it for "love nor money"

I have a Savage Striker(bolt action pistol,
14" barrel), and a BAR LW Stalker, in 308 Win.

I have developed 130 gr. Barnes XBT, and TSX,
loads for the Striker, and off the bench, on
a custom pistol rest, for the Striker, it
averages about .7 MOA, with the occasional group
at .5 MOA. This is with a 2-7x Burris handgun
scope on the Striker. I am sure the Striker
shoots more consistently than the shooter
Roll Eyes

The BAR has some 150 gr. loads developed for it,
with cheap 150 gr. SPT Hornady bullets, that
hold about 1.5 MOA, and some 150 gr. TSX loads
that average about .7 MOA, with a few just
under .5 MOA. This rifle has a 2-7x 3200 Elite
scope on it, so I am sure I could get better
groups out of it, with a higher powered scope,
and a good trigger job. Oddly enough, I shot
the 130 gr. loads, developed for the Striker,
in the BAR, just to know how well they grouped,
and that group was right at .5 MOA. They both
like that load!

I use to be a "Turdy Ought Six" guy, but I have
fallen head over heels for the little brother
308 Win. Actually now my choices are 308 Win
for deer, and 300 WSM for anything that is big,
or bad. The "Turdy Ought Six", is gathering dust.

Well, I like the 308 as a versatile deer cartridge. I have several, and all are accurate, most with very little to no load development. I've got a Browning BLR, which is very accurate considering the trigger, which is a POS. I've got to have a trigger job done to it by somebody...

I've got a Sauer 202 that is ridiculously accurate, with several different loads, both my handloads and factory loads. It is hard to beat as an handy, highly accurate rig.

I have several Sako's, a grey wolf in the Sako M-75 and a Hunter model in the M-85, and a TRG, different beasts with different purposes. The TRG is just unbelievably accurate, which is what it's totally designed to do, it's a Sniper rifle, and up to the billing of such. It is very heavy, and not very suited to hunting, unless you don't mind lugging it to a stand where you will be mostly sitting, and will have a stable rest, whereby you could surely execute some high precision shots!

The Hunter model M-85 just loves 150 grain Tiple Shocks, and has taken a lot of deer, it is a handy stable platform, and is one of my go to deer hunting rigs for Georgia. The M-75 grey wolf shoots several loads very well, and is set up with heavier bullets, 168 CT BT's (the coated ones) and is at least a 1/4 minute gun. I have taken some deer at some pretty long yardages with this rig.

My most recent 308 is a Surgeon Action rifle, Jewell trigger with a Krieger tube, McMillan stock. Rugged and bulletproof. It is the sum of it's parts, supremely accurate. I use it as my all around rough and tumble gun, it has integral picatinny rails on the action, and is really a military grade tough, accurate rifle.

I've found 308's easy to load for, and good accuracy easy to achieve, great accuracy there with a little searching.

If you like Rem style stuff, I would highly recommend the folks at Surgeon, they are very nice, and make a wonderful quality product.

Good Shooting!

This was both the first rifle I built from soup to nuts and the first .308 I got.

I built it primarily for CA pigs but would use it on just about anything. It weighs 7.25 lbs as it sits and is a joy to shoot, accurate too. I keep it both because it shoots and carries so well, and to remind me of how far I've come.

The year I built it I acquired at least 4 more .308's. My latest acquiaition is a Rem 788. But I have a couple of milsurps, a nice Interarms Mk X and an FN.

Used to love to hate the .308, until I got one.

I have a 308 in a Remington PSS Stainless. The rifle loves 168gr, 190gr SMKs with IMR-4064 but it shoots bugholes with 135gr flat base Bergers on top of Varget. I bought the rifle because of being a special run of the PSS in stainless but ended up really liking it because of how well it performs. It like most Remmys has a very long throat and requires bullets to be seated longer than what the box allows. With the level of performance and the confidence it gives me the box is meaningless. For hunting game I shoot the 165 Accubond over IMR-4064.

It shows some promise but no bragging yet . M-14 NM Barrel I can brag a little . Remington LH .308 New in Early 70's still a fair shooter . I had a HK in .308 but my Doc now has it . Stiller Predator short RH action, Krieger #5 contour 22" barrel, Jewell trigger, Williams bottom metal. Chambered with a semi-tight neck by Mike Bryant. All stocked by Serengeti in a modified Sako pattern. The idea was to create a rifle light enough to pass as a heavy sporter, but accurate enough to serve on the range...

Hi Thomas...
I have a MRC 1999 in 308 that I love but it is heavy for hard hunting. I recently bought a Rem. Mod. 600 in 308 that is so origional it looks like it just left the factory. It weighs 6.5 lbs. and so far I've gotten 1.5" groups at 100 yds with factory ammo. It's my first Remington but it has a great 2.5 lb trigger, feeds smooth and true, and is LIGHT. Plus, the 308 is one of my favorite cartridges. It will be with me on those 9 and 10 thou. foot hikes this Fall in the Sierras.

A few years ago a buddie who is a tikka fan let me shoot his 308 varmit and it shot so good it would shoot any (hand load ) he tried in it.So I feel in love with it and had to have me one.
I am not joshing this thing will shoot about anything you put in it.
Have shot more one holers at 100 yds useing different bullets and powders than I can remember.
One day last year another buddie and I went to try our luck at 1000 yds and with this tikka I hit 3 clay birds and he hit 2.Now this wasn't with 5 shots we shot quit a few rounds but I want to go back and see what kind of group it will shoot on a target. That day they didn't have any targets up so the clay birds were the only thing to shoot at.Just thought I would throw this in to show the rifle will shoot.
I carried the rifle one day last year (it is pretty light for a varmit rig and target scope)And took one at 270 yds with it.
There has been nothing done to the rifle except adjusting the trigger.

This was at 300 yds with a 130 gr bullet:

This was at 100 yrds 10 shot group useing another powder. The bullet hole on the left was my aiming point.

Man , there are some really nice rifles there guy,s! Mike , If thats the 1st rifle you built I can see why you got into the buisness !
That looks really nice. I like the stock a lot. Is that a pattern you had turned ?
I like the predator with the serengetti stock a bunch too,
I want one on a short action. Not sure witch short action. Really doesent matter that much.
I am not in a position to spend several thousand on a rifle , but you guys have given me some food for thought.
I could afford a kimber , or mabye a custom on a ruger short action.
Mabye I will wait for the new model 70.
A 2007 built on a short action. Then compare it to my 1953 built on a long action.
I could get a barreld action from MRC.
I would like a 22 inch light sporter barrel.
Around .60 at the muzzle. A 2.5X8 leupold.
In a prety chunk of walnut.
I still like my 06 real well, but as is comonly known. with lighter bullets , the .308 is all you need for deer as far as me and most others should be shooting. And great for Black bear and quite fine for elk , although I would probably use somthing bigger on the wapiti class of critters...tj3006

I have a Sav99 .308 that does 1.2" 5 shot groups at 50y with a 2.5X scope. It is a 7 pound rifle that weights 8.6 pounds with scope and sling.

Those loads were 150 gr 3050 fps with a 22" barrel and are way too hot. With cooler loads and a bigger scope, it would shoot better.

Mines a 308 BAR set up for brush hunting here in Wisconsin for whitetail. I have see through scope mounts with a weaver 1-3 sitting on top and williams fire sites sitting below. 20" barrel and syn stock make it great for making drives and stalking in heavy brush and grass.
That little V3 weaver weighs about 9ozs and is super clear for a $150 scope.
This gun will easily shoot 150 partition golds into 1-1.25" groups as well as most any other bullet. Really like it....probably the quickest firepower I have in my gunsafe.

I am reconsidering my small ring mex.
It would make a great .308. It would not be real expensive to do either. Its a .310 mag box. Longer than needed but not to much so.
Its drilled and tapped has a buhler style saftey.
All I would really need is a barrel and a stock. One like mike mcabe has on this thread with a 1/2 inch pad rather than the steel but plate , would be dandy.
I will mull it over for awhile...tj3006

Mine started out as Tikka LSA 55 deluxe with gorgous wood. Basically a Sako AII(?) short action but it was made in 69. Mine was also made before the cherry bomb bolt handle.

Shot very well, but the bofor barrel was rough as a corn cob. It took forever to clean. I had the barrel replaced with a Shilen and fitted a McMillan stock to it. Scoped it with a Leupold 2.5-8.

Good news is it now shoots Remington corelokts into half inch. Not much need to reload when I can buy a box of bullets for $9 and they shoot that well. Balances nice enough that I can shoot beer cans off hand at 100yards. Clean up is a snap.

The cons are it hates ballistic tips, 1-1 1/2 inch groups. Shoots corelokts so well I haven't reloaded for it. Also, I don't like the magazine system. I need someone to fabricate a floorplate and magazine box but I don't know someone with enough skill to do that. Finally, all it seems to do is kill does. I still haven't seen a buck while carrying it.

This Rifle may have saved my life shortly after I bought it,I was riding an ATV with a mate on the back and my rifle slung across my front.I flipped the ATV,the handle bar boss coming down on my neck.Luckily the rifle was across my chest and helped spread the impact.Still broke my collar bone and some ribs though.Breaking the scope hurt a 17year old more though!

Mike, just gorgeous. Is the pad brown? Rosewood forend tip and grip cap?

Would you send me a PM and tell me about the 'mods' to the Sako pattern, I really like the looks of that geometry.
