My first rifle was a Savage 99C .308. Most miserable piece of crap I ever owned. Kicked like a mule, the action worked like tank track, and it was a solid 3" shooter at 100 yards. Hated it.

Traded it in on a Model 70 Lightweight Carbine. 6 lbs. 20" barrel. Carried like a feather. shot like a dream. In a moment of insanity, I traded it.

The Mrs. has an A-Bolt Hunter. Nice to carry. Comfortable to shoot. Groups very well. Nice gun to look at.

My 14 and 10 year olds both have Vanguard Compacts in .308. The younger kid just got his. The older one's gun will shoot a handload of 3031 and a Winchester 150 gr. Power Point into 1/2 MOA . Dad's thinking about getting one for himself and putting the adult stock on it. thumb

Lots of positives,
I looked at a Ruger hawkeye SS synthetic and although its not my style , it just might be the one I buy.
I can get one for about 550.00 to 600.00.
Bolt on a matt finish scope and I would be ready to shoot.
It sure would look nice with a banded front site and a real like on the alaskan hawkeye !

Ruger Mk II VT (originally in .22-250) rebarreled with a Match grade SS Lothar Walther bbl. in .308, glass bedded. It now keeps 5 x 168 SMK into .25 MOA.

Looks good Andre!

The local gun shop has one similar with the factory barrel. I've pondered getting it but I think I need to get my nephew a gun and quit buying me them Smiler

I currently have two. Number 1 is a rem 788 I picked up for the wife. Topped with a 2-7 leupold it is one of the most accurate rifles in the safe. Shoots under MOA with both 150 and 180gr factory loads. The second one is a poorly modified yugo 48 mauser. It has a 18" light contour barrel, original military stock that has been reshaped to roughly wincheter 94 demensions. It needs the bolt handle replaced with a scope freindly one and needs D&T for scope. Ugly but handy and hopefully accurate enough to make a good trunk gun.

I got myself a cz-550 in .308. Out of the box is pretty well accurate enough with handloads; excellent for the price. I like the set trigger too - clockwork tho' it is. dancing

My .308 was a well worn old 99F that really was accurate so I kept it around here for about 15 years because it shot tiny groups, it was my saddle gun.

The about 3 months ago I got a wild hair and it is now polished out, rust blued, and is wearing a exhibition grade russian walnut stock, wood from Bill Dowtins Old World Walnut.com It has a neider type butt plate, and Fiser grip cap, egg cheek piece and its trim and slim..I am having it checkered right now as I am about to have cateracts removed this month and can't do that myself...I will sell it or use, whatever happens..I am contemplating the addition of a barrel band front sight, swivel and quarter rig for something a little different.

same here.....a presentation grade 99-F and it's been in the family since 1962.....shot couple trophy whitetails too.

It belonged to my father so it's never going to be sold or traded or altered. It will, however, go hunting once in a while! Darn thing is still working on it's first 100 rounds.

my .308 is a Rem 788 left hand bolt right eject. In a moment of foolishness I got it restocked, bcs the old one didn't feel right( i spent probably 3x as much for the stock as i did for the gun). i wish i knew how to post pictures here bcs it is, in my worthless opinion, beautiful. blonde maple stock, ebony fore-end, thin wrist...it feels great and fits perfectly. it's just the right weight. it came w/ an old weaver 4x that i've never gotten around to replacing bcs it works, i'm thinking about a zeiss conquest 4x. the rifle shoots great and i've had it in the deer stand a few times but haven't blooded it yet. i think it's the perfect deer stand/blind rifle.

Tikka Whitetail Hunter - Very accurate with 150 BT's.

M1-A National Match with the factory stock, a summer/fall camo stock and a winter camo stock.

Rem 700 Varmint in a B&C Medalist Varmint/Tactial

Don't shoot them much. Just got the 700 finished a week or two ago and haven't even had it to the range yet.

elmo, I have to say that is the finest 99E I've ever seen!

I only have one .308 and it is a Savage 99DL made in 1961 with cut checkering and brass rotor. Plain old Federal 150 grain groups 1.5" at 100 and handloads do a little better. I really like hunting with it because of it's light weight, smoothness of operation, and accuracy.

I have a couple and am happy with all of them. The Remmie 600 is an easy carry flame thrower that comes up faster than a lever and has taken quite a few white tails. The Savage 99 is a sweet shooter and has been loaned out many times with success. I keep it as part of my "lever" collection but holds a warm spot in my heart. My Sako deluxe with Shilen barrel and Sako Mannlicher are my pride and joys. I also have a Sako Rihhimaki that I don't shoot any more but gets fondled often. The Mannlicher belonged to my BIL and has taken more deer than any other of my rifles. It shoots well within 1 inch at 100 with factory ammo and will be with me till the end. The last 308 I have is a SA M21 and I have had a couple of fun range sessions with it but only with military ammo. Right now I don't reload so I have to be satisfied with trying factory ammo to get the best results. Considering most of my rifles are used for hunting, under 2 inch at 100 is temporarily acceptable. Many, like the Sako's do better than MOA even with factory fodder. As I set up with reloads I can change the accuracy to what many of these rifles are capable. Unfortunately I need to step up to shooting better too. The 308 isn't my favorite caliber but it gets the job done.
