Before my recent 3-year spate of illness, I bought several hundred rounds of .375 Ruger brass. Mainly, I intended to use it for making .300 Newton brass.

However, never got around to it. So, now I still have it all.

I already have the following rifles on hand:

Three 6.5 non-mags, one 6.5 Maggie, one .270 Win, Four 7mm non-mags, three 7m/m Mags, six .30-06s, four .300 Magnums, one .338 Win Mag, two .358 Wins, one 9.3x62 Mauser, one 9.3 x &74-R double, a .375 H&H Mauser, .405 Winchester, one .411" on full length .375 belted mag brass, .404 Jeffrey, .405 Win, .450-400 3", and a raft-full of smaller and bigger bores.

Let's say I gave the .375 Ruger brass to you. (I won't, but let's say I did.) So here's my question...

Question:
What rifle and cartridge chambering would you buy or make to use that brass? And why?

Choices:
Just what it is, a .375 Ruger
A full-length 9.3 Ruger (several thousand bullets already on hand)
Something bigger than .375 bore size
Something smaller than 9.3 (.366) bore
Something smaller than .30 bore

My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

8mm Rugar. It would make a great long range elk cartridge W/.200gr Accubonds @ 3000+ fps.

I would sell it...and everything but the 270 win and 9,3 and then do a lot of hunting

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Close Mike but I would also keep either the .405 Win. or the 450-400 3" depending on which rifle I liked the best.
But I don't seem to follow my own advice. Roll Eyes

sell about 90% of those rifles and go to Africa before it's too late.

waveI would use it for trading material.
I'm beyond the desire for large capacity shoulder brusers. The ones I have are seldom shot anymore or have been traded. beerroger

Thanks for the suggestions so far, guys.

I really have no desire whatsoever to go to Africa, whether to hunt or to do anything else there. (I'm "allergic" to abject involuntary poverty, totalitarianism, filth, and so on, so have no desire to witness any more of it than I already have in a lifetime where I spent years as a cop, sheriff's deputy, hospital administrator, and soldier.)

Some days I feel like maybe doing as Mike suggests and doing a lot more hunting. But for big game animals it would be photography-hunting. I've killed enough for one life-time when it comes to relatively harmless wild 4-legged herbivorous types. Civilization is making it tough enough for them as it is. So, I think for shooting animals, I'd pretty much stick with my 16 gauge L.C. Smith and concentrate on prairie chickens and Huns, my two favorites.

If I decided to sell most of my guns (which I have been considering), I'd likely keep my double (for which I have 5 different sets of barrels), my Ruger 7x65-R, and my .376 Steyr. With those, I could hunt anything in North or South America I might want to eat.

I do kinda think either the 8mm Ruger or .338 Ruger would be a "heap-big fun" cartridge, leaving the brass at the full .375 Ruger length. Though I've owned both standard and AI 8m/ms, I've never had or shot an 8m/m maggie, so that would be interesting to play with....

Anyway, I really enjoy your comments and ideas. If you have more thoughts or suggestions you'd like to share, I'll certainly look forward to seeing them here.

Looks like you could something bigger than 375, perhaps a 416 or 458?

The votes are in, and the vast majority of you (more than 2 out of every three) voted to use it as is...in .375 Ruger. A smaller group voted to use it for a 9.3 full-length Ruger.

On balance, I think I'll likely go with the 9.3 idea, if for no other reason because I have so many 9.3 bullets on hand, and relatively few .375 bullets. Plus I already have that really nice magnum Mauser in .375 H&H with a truly beautiful English Walnut stock, and a Steyr SBS Pro-Hunter in .376 Steyr.

Thank you all for your input.
