Gents: Is there a particular stock design that would work well with a M70 in 3006 if one were to mount the scope with QR rings so it could be used with both optics and irons (when needed)? Thinking walnut here. Jeff

sorry - allowed my reaction and personal preference to overwhelm my usual desire to make useful posts. the QR thing has been hashed out before - sit back, grab a beer and a bag of marshmallows...i'll cut us a couple of willow sticks and we'll watch the flames!

great... serious, man. I'm wondering because I want to have these guns worked on and would like to replace the stocks with something else but not sure how the stock should be.

tasunkawitko, you know he's not talking about "see through" mounts right? About any stock that provides about 1" of drop at the comb and 1 1/2" will work pretty smoth for both iron sight and scope use. I actually prefer about 1 1/2" to 1 3/4" drop at the heal even with a scope. I've never liked mashing my cheek into the stock to get a sight picture. One option is to mount your scope as low as possible. Then mount your iron sights kinda high using an "island" as a sight base for the rear and a tall ramp for the front. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Excellent advice. When people say a stock can't do double duty for a scope and iron sights, I just scratch my head. I think the problem with their reasoning is that they have used rifles with low-to-the barrel irons and a high-mounted scope. Of course that won't work. With that combination, the shooter has to either crunch down on his cheek bone or crane his neck and sacrifice a good, firm cheek weld. Not comfortable in either case. But with the irons mounted higher (say, on an NECG island rear base and a banded ramp front), and the scope snuggled in low QD Talley rings, I have never had a problem going back and forth from irons to a scope. The stock should be straight back, with very little drop at heel, and high combed - the bolt should clear the comb, but not by a whole lot, IMHO. actually, as generic as they may be, most factory stocks are dimensioned with that in mind, as much as they can be, anyways. pick up any factory rifle that comes with irons and it will be a decent compromise between scope and ironsight alignment.

You might also try a swing off scope mount. HH developed that idea many moons past and I have an old Savage 99 which snaps back and forth and stays on center yet. They are actually easier to use than the Leupold qr. Frank

My factory M70 Classic Featherweight stock is a bout 3/4" drop at comb, and it would work fine for me with irons, as well as the low-mounted scope I have on it now.
