Hey HogWild, I saw that as a concern a few years ago myself. Remington's history concerning lower selling cartridges (5mm Rimfire for one) is not good.

So, I decided to see how difficult it would be to Reform some existing cases into 350RemMags. It actually worked fairly well.

I removed the Expander Ball from the Full Length Resizer, coated some 338WinMag cases with good old Imperial Sizing Die Wax and squashed them. One small note here is that if you have your FL Die set up to P-FLR, you will need to squash the case a bit more than that on the initial resize. You can either screw the Die into the press a bit more, or use a Feeler Gauge between the Casehead and Shell Holder to "shim it up" just a few thousandths. Be sure the Expander and ESPECIALLY the Decapping pin is removed, or the "Shim" will get hole punched by the Decapping Pin. (No need to tell you why I know that.Big Grin)

The very long Caseneck needs to be cut off by using a hacksaw to speed the process. Just cut the neck so it is still just a little bit long by sticking it through a few 3/8" Fender Washers held in a vise. The washers keep the neck from collapsing during the sawing. Chamfer, deburr and go on to the Annealing.

You will need to Anneal the necks, but that goes quickly and no need to go into the long drawn out fiasco some people recommend. Just hold the Casehead in your fingers, heat the Caseneck with a Propane Torch and when you feel the Casehead getting warm, drop the case in a bucket of water.

Do a final Resize with the Expander back in the FL Die, trim to length, chamfer and deburr again and they are ready for reloading.

I've also found that Annealing the Reformed Cases a bit more often than normal helps prevent the Neck Splits.

Hey Jerry/AK, How about a few more details on your rifle? What length barrel? What Overall Cartridge Length are you able to use? Does the Bullet Base extend beyond the Caseneck into the available Power space? Did you do the rifle yourself or have it assembled? How well do you like the trigger and did it need tuning? What stock did you choose?

Sounds like a very interesting set-up.

Hotcore,
Sorry to take so long to reply...been real busy. The barrel length is 23" and it is stainless. Montana Rifleman supplied the barrel and chambered it. I had them throat it long so that I could use the 250 gr. Speer seated to the base of the neck and the 270 gr. Speer 9.3mm reduced to .358" also seated to the base of the neck. This makes the overall cartridge length slightly less than 3.0"...the magazine of the M1999 Montana short action will handle 3.1". So, MRC supplied the barrelled action and I and my local 'smith modified a Winchester M70 Featherweight walnut stock to fit. That was a chore!

The scope is a Leupold 1.75-6X.

The trigger is fine as is in my opinion.

Here's a picture of the rifle:Montana Rifleman M1999

Hey Jerry, Sure is a fine looking rifle. Ever since Win came out with that Featherweight stock with the Schnable forend tip, I've thought it was a real looker.

Is there a particular reason you went with the wood over synthetic?

I tried for about 6-8 years to find a Stainless & Synthetic M70 in 308Win with that same stock profile. Apparently they sold as quick as they hit the Dealer shelves, cause I just couldn't find one.

There is a guy who occasionally posts on here as ".358" and he has used the 250gr Speer for many years on Black Bears with excellent results from his various 358Wins. I can't remember right off if he had a 350RemMag or 35Whe at one time or not. But, he sure speaks highly of that specific bullet.

Have you had a chance to try one on Game yet?

Sawging down the 9.3mm seems like an interesting project. How is the accuracy with them?

I REALLLLLLLY like your 23" barrel. My 350RemMag's barrel is 20" which makes for fine carrying, but is way way to loud. How would you rate the report from your rifle in comparison to say a 300WinMag?

Best of luck with that rifle.

Hot Core,
Actually, there were two reasons for choosing that stock: 1) I wanted the schnabel; 2) I ran out of money, otherwise I would have gone with the MPI version like my buddy did on his (.338-.300 WSM). I was able to buy the wood stock on Ebay for less than $100 including shipping; the MPI version would have been around $280. I'll probably switch in a few years when the bank account recovers. Roll Eyes

Yes, I've shot several blacktail deer and black bears with the Speer 250 Hotcor with excellent results, and a good friend has shot several deer, elk, moose, and a brownie with that bullet...all with great results.

I've had okay accuracy with the 9.3 Speer 270 gr reduced to .358", though another friend tried them in his .350 Remington Mag and wasn't happy (he's having a hard time getting ANY bullet to group in his rifle and can't figure out why).

My M1999 rifle has only been shot at the range (with hearing protection) because it is so new, so I really couldn't rate it against my other rifles as to loudness. And I don't have a .300 WM to compare it to anyway. I suspect though that it would be quieter because of lower muzzle pressure. Pure speculation. Anyway, I have no trebitations about taking it hunting and shooting a couple or rounds without hearing protection.

On the topic of reduced 9.3mm bullets, you might take a look at my post this morning on the thread "Nosler juices the Whelen" here in the Medium Bores category.

Hey Jerry, Thanks for the update. Good luck on finding a synthetic stock that fits your needs.

Just looked at the other thread. Sure was a nice offer you made to Swage the 9.3mm bullets for those folks. Looks like someone would take you up on that.

Best of luck to you.
