is slightly off the wall, but I have my dream rifle already, an InterArms MarkX that has been worked on by someone, in 375 H&H.

90%+ of the hunting I have done in the last 10 years has been done with that rifle, and a Ruger 77 Tang Safety in 35 Whelen.

As far as a REAL Dream rifle would go, A Holland & Holland Royal Double in 465 H&H would fill the bill.

After using dozens of rifles through the years I find myself reaching for a rifle I bought used in 2003. It is a Kimber 84M with a 2 position saftey in 7-08 topped off with a 2.5 x 10 x 40 Leupold VariX III.

In the photo below it is wearing a 4.5 x 14 Leupy that it has since shed for the 2.5 x 10.

It is light as a feather. Points like my finger and shoots with such light recoil. It wasn't always my dream rifle but has grown on me through the years and is now a true friend.

I've got mine....

Ruger 77MkII SS Laminate rebarelled with a PAC-NOR Super Match in 6.5 Swede, 1:8 twist...

50 rounds at 300 yards in less than an hour off a bipod on soft ground with a mild side wind - all into substantially less than 3"... apart from two 'called' fliers that took the group to 3.5".... ignore the called fliers, and it was more like 2.25" not bad at 300.

Did I mention that the barrel is a hunting profile, and I hunt more than I range shoot?

Dream rifle? Yup!!

Just to make it interesting, I'd add a full polish & blue with decent walnut furniture - already done it to one in 7.62x51 Cool

A Ruger 1# is what I'm hankering for right now (besides a plethora of AR's) not sure what style or finish or even caliber... 2 criteria though... Not a magnum or DG cartridge as I REALLY want to enjoy shooting it and it will have a premium fixed power scope for the ultimate in single shot and shooting simplicity...

I'm with Dr. Lou on this, it would have to be a matching set of custom rifles (Winchester M-70 CRF) in 300H&H & 375H&H both with 24" barrels, and stocks made out of South Texas Mesquite or Texas Hill Country Wallnut, put together by one of the great smiths of Winchester's past. Both would also wear American made Leupold VX III scopes and those "lousy-cheap" (as they have been called) classic Weaver bases and rings that never let you down.

I'll soon have the poor man’s version; I’m having a MK X re-barreled to 300 H&H to go along with my MK X 375 H&H

Both have Kimber QR rings built by Jim Wisner so I can swap scopes (1.5x5 Leupold & 3-9 Ziess)

Mine started as a plain Jane Rem 700 in 30-06. Had a custom kevlar/fiberglass stock fitted for me and satin blued the barreled action. A Leupold Compact 2-7 tops it off. 7Lbs total. Shoots everything from 110 to 200gr bullets to the same point and when I look at game and mount the rifle, the duplex just appears on the kill zone and the animal falls over. We'll celebrate our 25th anniversary next year, might have to plan a hunt together. Wink

The rifle of my dreams would hit everything I aim at...

In the real world, my dream rifle is the one I use the most: Winchester mod 70 Classic CRF Sporter in 30-06, bedded in a Featherweight stock. Balances a bit better than one with a Fwt-profile barrel, and I find the extra ounces worth carrying. It currently wears a Swarovski 3-9x36 in Leupold Superlow QRs, I really like those rings.

Next dream rifle would be a similar Winchester in 375 H&H for buffalo, and a David Mackay Brown round body boxlock double 450/400 for the tusker.

Bukken, it is coincidental that you speak of a M-70 30-06 Sporter in a Featherweight stock. I just had one put together three weeks ago. But mine originally was a 270 Win. in a stainless steel 22" barrel Featherweight. It shot so-so, but as you mentioned does not balance very well. Well about a year ago, I bought a Winchester 30-06 CRF SS Sporter 24"barrel from someone I knew, for $25. I currently have a 270WSM in a SS Featherweight w/24" barrel.(in the WSMs the barrel contour on a Featherweight is the same as a Sporter) Well this 24" barrel Featherweight balances perfectly, so I thought why not have the 30-06 barrel replace the 270 Winney. I am glad I did. Again the rifle balances perfectly for me and it shoots fantastic (so far) to boot!

The fancy stuff is great to dream over for sure, but when it comes down to the rifle I keep building in my mind it's be a working gun, a practical woods rifle.

I'm not enough of a techie to know the barrel particulars like the optimum twist & length, but it's a dream, right?

Mauser 98 action
20-22" med weight barrel
nice open sights
.358 win, maybe .35 whelen
parkerized
low power variable scope in QR mounts by one of the fancy German glass grinders
English pattern stock, either decent wood or maybe even a laminate, either one with a low gloss utilitarian finish.

And I've always liked the look of those barrel band front sling swivels...

Took a Kimber of Oregon 338 win mag that shoots lights out. Put a stunning piece of marble cake turkish walnut on it tailor made to my dimensions. Pancake cheek piece, slight palm swell with a semi pistol grip. 26 lines / inch checkering. Slender quarter rib and a milled and shaped NECG front barrel band sight. The back square bridge dovetails were adapted to accept Tally QD mounts.
Action was polished like butter, trigger set at 2.5 lbs. Skeleton grip caps. Rust blued
I had this project completed years ago. Still my favorite rifle to handle.

As I already own my dream riffle a Sauer 202 in 6,5x55 with swing of scopemounts, I would like a 9,3x62 swich barrel on it.
So my next dream riffle would be a drilling with to shotgun barrel in, say 16 or 20 and a riffle barrel in .22 hornet or rimmed bigger .224 bullet cal. I would use it to hunt Rjupa here in Iceland (Ptarmigan) and also have a option to shoot a artic fox (lot fox prints theese day's)
And finaly a double in 450/400 or 470NE (just dont know) to hunt buff in Africa (also a far away dream)

Sauer and Zeiss, perfect match.

Posted some time ago that dream rifle would come from Peter Hoffer, Austria, but that is not going to happen, so have switched to minty Mannilicher Shoanauer Mod. 1952,full stock, G&H mount, Unertl Hawkeye 4X scope, cal. '06. due in my hand before Christmas(one of those Martin to Martin gifts!) and since we can have two, second will be very petite upgrade Merkel 141 w/ fitted case, cal. 308. and hopefully will have in hand by end of March '10. For me anyway, that completes my dream rifle(s), for now.

So far that has been a very expensive dream.
