After searching around on the net this place looks like a good place to ask this question. I'm expecting my 35-284 to come back from Shilen within a week. I had them put a 25 inch barrel on it. The question is what type of velocities should I expect with 200 and 225 grain bullets. This isn't my first wildcat but it is my first on a 284 case so maybe someone can help. Redside

Find a manual with data on the .350 Remington magnum. These two cases are within a % or two of identical capacity, so loading data and velocities for one is a good guide for the other. Some date for the .350 Rem was taken with the 660 carbine 20" barrel, so take that into account.

I would expect ~2900 fps w/ 200 gr and ~2700 fps w/ 225 gr. There might be a tad more speed in it, but not much. Should be a great round!

Thanks for the info all. I was hoping that my rifle would end up being a short action 35 Whelen. My goals are at least 2700 fps with 225, 2850 with 200, and 2500 with 250 bullets. Shilen is suppose to send it out tomorrow can't wait for next week and a little load development. At first was I was going to use Rl 15, but it seemed like it would fill the case too much on a short action. So I'm also going to try some Hodgen Benchmark. It is very small grained and suppose to have the burning rate of 3031. By the way my rifle is on a short action old tang safety Ruger M77. It started life as a 358 Win but wouldn't shoot groups better than 2 or 3 inches at 100 yards. So I finally decided on rebarreling and since I was going that far I might as well have it made into something a little more powerful without altering the bolt face. Presto...I got a 35-284. Redside, Don't jump in and use .35 Whelan data without adjusting downward out of caution, because: (1) The .284 case has just a tad less capacity. (2) The heavier bullets will require deeper seating in your short action, so the case will have even less effective capacity. I think you'll be able to match .35 Whelan velocities with bullets in the 180 to 200 grain range, especially with your long barrel, but it may be tough to get there without excessive pressure with the 225 and 250's. In my experience, the .284 cases are really tough and don't show pressure signs as quickly as typical '06 brass, so be cautious. Also, do you expect to loose one round in the magazine due to the fatter case? Just curious. Good luck, sounds like a nice rig.

I think I have a "fast" .350 Remington. My AOL length is 3.00" due to some extra mag work. I can get 2730ish out of flat based Nosler 225 Partitions. I can't memorize all of the cartridge specs, but I think the 350 haas more capacity than the 284 necked up would. How much more I don't know. I am using a 22" Shilen. I wouldn't get your hopes too high. If I did it over again, I'll do a 350 WSM.

Sorry, commited my biggest bitch and didn't read you post correctly and jumped the gun. With a 25" tube, you'll get 2700. I wondered why H4350 wouldn't work, never tried it, but I get my best velocity with Varget.

Well, with two 350 rem Mag's under my belt (600 and custom Mauser 98, 18.5" and 20" barrels respectively) I can definately tell you that the 350 will produce higher velocities than the 35-284. Which isn't to say that you won't achieve your goal of equalling 35 Whelen velocities, because the 350 has a little more case capacity than that round as well. With the Mauser I can seat the bullets out quite a bit, and I can easily get 2600-2650 fps with a 250 gr bullet. Most whelen will give you 2450-2500, and you should be able to achieve that with your 35-284. FWIW - Dan

I got my 35-284 back this weekend and did some load development using the Sierra 225 bullet. I reached pressure problems using Hodgen Benchmark and switched over to Rl 15..Presto...good velocity and lower pressures than with Benchmark. Here is what I got. Benchmark 35-284 50 grains Velocity 2589 fps 51 grains Velocity 2621 fps 52 grains Velocity 2667 fps extractor mark on brass...stopped here. Rl 15 35-284 55 grains Velocity 2668 fps no sign of pressure 56 grains Velocity 2724 fps looks like close to max. Settled on 55.5 grains of Rl 15 it gives me an average of 2707 fps and accuracy with the Shilen barrel has been around 3/4 inch for 3 shots.

Redside, You are making my want to rechamber one of my 358s, as I only get 2500 out of the sierra 225. Speaking of which, those have been the most accuarte so far, and I've been shooting 358 for over 10 years. It seems to get great results (gameking) and i have NOT recovered one in years of hunting texas wild hogs. Have you tried, just tried, to measure your chamber? you might be able to get a tad more length out of your rounds, and then a little more powder? good hunting jeffe
