Just took home rifle in .270 here in Alberta Canada. Paid $800 CDN and other then the extra scope holes being drilled crooked it seems to be in fine shape. Plan is to mount a peep. I now see that the bolt is numbered 25 higher than the receiver serial number. Got mixed up at a shop 79 years ago??? Required a replacement bolt and one built the same day was found?? I doubt that. Advice??? Gunsmith to check headspace?? Fire it several times(distantly with a string) and measure brass...and if all is well enjoy the rifle as is???

If it passes head space muster, you got a great deal, those original 20" mod 70 per 64s or pre war bringing big bucks in the states, especially in .375 H&H like Pierre van Tonder has..I lust after that old beat up gun.

Bought some 270 ammo today. Was tempted to fire it. Decided to try the bolt in the Carbine from my M70 Prewar chambered in .300H&H. Surprised to see that it fit and closed. The difference in bolt faces is obvious. Better wait to gauge it. All the focus is on the .300H&H anyways for now...Next week we are off for my first trip to SA where it will be used for plains game.

Fire a piece of brass with just a primer in it. If the headspace is gross, the primer will back out.
And/or, take a piece of masking tape and affix it to a new case head. Close the bolt. If it closes on more than 3 layers of tape, it might be on the high side.
Then, you might want to fire form, or form a false shoulder, on your brass like any wildcat. To prolong case life.
In any case, no pun intended, you got a good deal because 800 C is like, $300 US.
That was a joke; have to be careful nowadays; everyone is offended.
No your bolt was not switched at the factory.
If it was mine, I would have already fired it.

Simple, yet ingenious.

Tried the masking tape tonight and it will not close on 3 layers. Snug with 2 layers but will close. Looks like its good to go then...
