I told the Ruger reps at DSC to run the Hawkeye African in 9.3x62 again and to make all the Africans available without a brake. Of course with just one vote they are unlikely to do it. ------------------------------- Some Pictures from Namibia Some Pictures from Zimbabwe An Elephant Story

if the process is still 250 rifles order there is maybe a way to do it. via Lypseys i think. this is the way one canadian distributor got us the 303 british in number 1. Phil

Could it just be rebored to 9.3x62? There should be enough meat in the walls of the 30-06 barrel, especially since they all have the heavier barrels?

Yes. | |||

I'd be happy with the 9.3 African that they made a few years back. No break, 23 inch barrel. They seem to be in demand and people are asking a premium when you find one.

Everytime I get a line on one, they are gone.

Another vote for "No Brake". I would have bought one of the new African's by now if they would have left the threaded muzzle off of it. Sent from my iPhone

Yet another vote for no brake. Ruger, are you listening?

Hack saw, and a muzzle cutting device and you could have it the way you want it.

Rebore....I have heard the hammer forged barrels such as used by Ruger are very hard. Any truth to that and can they be rebored? I would go with a new barrel, you get the length and contour you want without being restricted by the factory dimensions. Mark

A new Ruger Hawkeye that would work at CDNN in 270, 270, 30-06, 25-06 is $550 to my door. A new Ruger Guide gun in 30-06 is about $1000 to my door. Rebarrel, sights and a stock for the Hawkeye would be about $1600 ($900 for the barrel and bluing, $600 to have similar sights installed, and $150 for a Boyds Laminate stock with a good pad). Rebore is about $400 with return shipping.

Almost went with a rebore job for LH Sako .30-06, but then I found NIB LH Tikka Hunter in 9.3x62 for a tad over $700.00. Couldn't pass that up. Glad I held off, since now I have both.

I believe JES is still under $300.00. I've heard nothing but good when it comes to his work.

Wayne Jacobson at AHR basically built a Hawkeye African 9.3 for my daughter. I was looking at the ones for sale here and at auction sites. I knew they would need better recoil pads, LOP shortened, function and feeding checked, etc. I talked to Wayne and he furnished a new Ruger action he had barreled and a factory take-off stock. He shortened the LOP and the barrel to fit her, added a 1" decelerator pad, added his sights, added a barrel band swivel, finished the metal, bedded it into the stock, etc. Sure it cost more than a factory Ruger Hawkeye, and might look like one if you don't pick up on the details. But it fits her (priceless), has been worked over by a qualified smith, and he sourced the scope and set it up for me in the Alaska Arms rings. On the other hand, I could have bought a converted Model 70 .30-06 off Gunbroker. It might have run like a champ, it might have been a cluster. So I passed that one up. ------------------------------- Some Pictures from Namibia Some Pictures from Zimbabwe An Elephant Story

The no brake business is nonsence..That brake is detachable, comes with both a thread protector that looks like a muzzle and a long thread protector that's supposed to make it shoot to the same POI as with the brake..I have the Africans in 9.3x62 and in .338 Win. without a brake, and a 338 Win. African with a brake..It sure is nice to sit at the bench and test it with a brake and no recoil, I can even practice off hand shooting all day on Jack Rabbits and Rock Chucks with feeling the effects of recoil..When I go after elk or to Africa, I leave the brake off and the thread protecter on...Whats wrong with that? RIGHT ON, RAY...this Brake/No brake garbage is totally 'ron. If you DON'T LIKE A BRAKLE, don't buy a rifle that has one...if the rifle has one installed REMOVE it...SIMPLE...grab a hack saw, a flat file, drill motor and 60° countersink to crown with, send it to a machine shop/gunsmith, unscrew it, WEAR EAR PLUGS...COME ON NOW. I think this B/N.B. BS is talking to the choir FROM the choir, or one dog barking a the boogie man and a thousand barking at the sound, or just plain pot stirring. There are so damned many ways to come up with a solid, NON BRAKED 9.3x62 on just about ANY standard receiver you want to pick or do a simple switch barrel, that I can't believe this krap keeps coming up. I agree. If ya don't want a brake. Take it off. Put on the thread protector or weighted thread protector. Tho the 62 isn't a man killer as far as recoil goes. I like having the brake on there. I greatly applaud Ruger for coming up with all the options in one box. !!! They have tried to please everyone and imo have done a very good job. I would like it in the Guide Gun tho. Instead of the African. Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

But, then again. I would be tickled pink to see a regular stainless Hawkeye 22" barrel Hawkeye in 9.3×62 . And the 35 Whelan back available !! I'd be pretty happy with a regular Hawkeye too.

Me, too. A friend of mine has one in .338-caliber. It's a very nice looking rifle.
