Six months ago I had no interest in getting another rifle in some new wiz bang offering. But then Roscoe had to mention he picked up a lefty Ruger in 338 RCM and that the rifle shot MOA and almost duplicated the 338/06.
Did a little research and found out the left hand version has a 20 inch barrel and factory iron sights.
http://www.ruger.com/products/...pecSheets/37150.html

Seems like a good combination for MY style of hunting. This being mainly moose and maybe a girz or blackie. 225-250 grain bullets starting out at 2400-2600 fps should be perfect for up to 200 yard shots. This could be another case of the rifle making the cartridge due to the short barrel and factory irons. Add the fact CDNN is selling them for $550 and that includes the rings and it seems like a reasonable risk. Intention is for the rifle to be back up when the doubles have to stay in camp due to rain.

Already own a 338 Win Mag and 35 Whelen so it kind of overlaps but when was the last time we needed to justify anything to buy another rifleSmiler

Has this offering from Ruger intriqued any others here? If it has would like to here how you like or dislike the rifle and caliber.

Darn right it has.....If I knew how to stuff it in a Remington 700 short action, I'd be a lot more interested....but boltface and rail work don't trip my trigger at all....

Maybe If I had a .350 Rem Mag in an old Remmy..... as I'd far rather chamber for something SAAMI than a wildcat.

I keep coming back to it as a thicket gun for big white tails. A friend of mine has rebarreled several in this caliber.

I have a Remington Classic in .35 Whelen that I have had for a long time. It shoots great but I am giving serious thought to trading it off on a .338 RCM.

Didn't trade off the 35 Whelen but did get a .338 RCM. It rocks. Got it on paper but weather won't seem to cooperate. As soon as I get a good day, I will put it across the chronograph and give you a report. This is a sweet little rifle.

Just ordered one this morning. Stainless compact with open sights. The biggest pain the the butt is that here in Australia the guns come with medium to high rings, why oh why would you make a compact carbine and supply tall rings, it just knocks me over dumbfounded

Look I probably dont need it, but I've always like the short and fat calibres and the idea of a 20 inch heavy hitter appeals to me.

Especially since I've just brought a Martin compound bow, I think I'll cheat and carry the 338 RCM on my back while I carry the bow......

I'll have it in a week or two, feedback to come.

Was finally able to pick mine up from my dealer. Sweet rifle, nice sights, handles well, short barrel. Need to glass the action and take her to the range when I have some time. Looks like it could be a nice moose slayer.

I've been well pleased with both the cartridge as well as the entire package of the rifle. I got mine to replace a 338-06 that I had sold.

Best Smiler

You are really going to like this rifle/cartridge combination. A gentle roll crimp makes it feed like a dream.

Likely because someone, very likely the importer, perceives that everyone in Australia uses a scope with a 50+mm objective lens. Fortunately Ruger’s rings are interchangeable front to rear and they sell them as singles rather than as pairs…so you’ll only need to purchase one short height ring to use up front - use the medium height ring in the rear and you’ll be set.

I have two SS SA M77s in 300 RSAUM, both came with one short and one medium height ring for 1" tube diameter. It would definitely be nice if Ruger would just up the price of their M77s by $15-$20 and include one ring of each height in the rifle box…then the user would be covered regardless of the scope used.

Here is some information regarding ring height for the .338 RCM from an article by Joe D'Alessandro that appears on the Real Guns web site:

"The M77 takes rings with a one height step differential as an offset to action height. In this case, a medium ring height for the front and a high ring for the rear. The high ring at the rear offered some welcome clearance between a raised bolt handle and the scope's large eyepiece."

CDNN's online catalog, page 47. However, the photo is not correct. Photo shows plain barrels 22-24 inches long. The lefty has a 20 inch barrel and factory iron sights.
