An universal caliber is Your opinions. And however having on hands a rifle in the caliber of 30-06,- consider him more universal for many types of hunt from СХР1 and practically to СХР4. .375 H&H When they finally get around to passing the "you can only own one rifle" law, a take down rifle on a Mauser action built by Duane Wiebe will look like the only thing you'll ever want. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Hard to beat a .375, but I'd opt for the .375 Ruger.

The 30-06 really is universal, problem is its military heritage and the laws banning usage of such cartridges. That said, the 9.3X62 and 375 H&H must be considered as strong contenders, and with near universal availability of ammunition, they are.

I think it depends on where you live. As mentioned in some countries military cartridges are verboten for civilian ownership and use. Being no fan of magnums, In North and South America I'd choose my 338-06. I would not be afraid of the big bears with the right bullets. I can get quality bullets as light as 160g thru 250g. It can shoot the light ones very fast and the heavy ones fast enough. The 30-06 would be my second choice. If I lived elsewhere in this world my choice would be the a 35 Whelen

30-06. If the millitary thing is in place and the 30-06 is out, I'll take a 300 H + H.

Depending on where you live and what you're up to a fella might pick 22 rimfire, 30'06, or 375 H&H. Of course someone stuck in one of the worn torn parts of the globe might be better off with 5.56x45, 7.62x39, 7.62x51, or 7.62x54R.

Yep - 30/06 also agree with 9,3x62 and 375 HH. Would add 270, if just US 48 states. ________ Ray

I agree with the .30-06. However, I also like the 9.3 in some form. I own and shoot the 9.3x62, 9.3x74R and the 9.3x64. Just got back from Mozambique and Botswana where I used the 9.3x64 on game from red duiker to sable at ranges from 35 to 285 yards. Without question, the best results I've ever had on game from any cartridge in my hunting experience. The 9.3s have fast become my favorite cartridges. ______________________ Guns are like parachutes. Due to the availability of 06 ammo; I would have to agree on that round. I am very fond of the 338 Win Mag. You can shoot 200-210 gr bullets at 3000 fps for a flat shooting sheep rifle in bear country or use a 250 premium projectile and shoot Cape buffalo in a pinch. It can be made in a semi light weight rifle with little fuss.

375H&H. Good for anything from tanks to tin cans. It's really just an overgrown 30-06. What's not to love? Have gun- Will travel The value of a trophy is computed directly in terms of personal investment in its acquisition. Robert Ruark

I think "universal" means everywhere, not a locale, not a region. If it means everywhere (at least on Earth) that means Africa too. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

If limited to one rifle for all areas of the planet: 375 H&H only because of availability of ammo due to its longevity I think some of the newer rounds are slightly better but in a calibre to manage all game the H&H is still the goto for a 1 rifle plan. Do you talk about longevity, but me it does seem to, that calibers from .375H&H and higher have the problems and usually are not lasting in relation to that 30-06 or I wrong ?

??? If you mean shelf life-- storage conditions not size dictate longevity. If you mean barrel life--overbore cartridges and poor mantainance are rifle killers ,- not larger bores in general. The longevity I made reference to actually was the age and continued heavy use of the 375H&H as compared to other suitable 1 world rifles. 9.3X64B It can be built in a light rifle and is quite flat shooting. Would feel happy to use it on light game such as Chamois and have no hesitations in using it on the biggest bull Elephant.

Universal for the world... 9.3x62

If there were no restrictions re game laws, military chamberings etc... universal would be anything firing a 220gr to 300gr projectile where a good soft/solid combination existed. It would be a medium bore between 0.338" to 0.375". Personally ... 358Norma would be close to ideal, or the 350RemMag/35Whelen/9.3x62 if recoil was an issue. With the Norma, I'd happily settle for a 250gr soft/solid combination. You could also build a compelling argument for something lighter like a 300WinMag (or Weatherby) with 220gr soft/solid combination. Cheers... Con
