To optimize accuracy and carry weight, does anyone have recommendations on barrel contour for a 35 whelen? I’m considering a #4 or #5 contour by Benchmark. At 24 inches, the #4 has a muzzle diameter of .675 and the #5 has a muzzle diameter of .725.

Just my preference, but I'd take the smaller one. Maybe even a #3. Maybe smaller yet... Is this a 'carrying' rifle, or a rifle to be used in a blind or short stalks? If a carrying rifle, for greater distances, I'd go lighter. But that's just me. I'm old.

I have a Mauser “Type A” Barrel in 9.3x62, and a complete original Type A rifle in the same caliber. Both have a muzzle diameter of .590”. DPCD has a Type A contour that is slightly heavier, and customer reports indicate excellent accuracy. You might talk to DPCD. Matt FISH!! Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984: "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

Mine uses a #3 contour Shilen, 22.5" length. Built to drag around in swamps and thick brush. "For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind..." Hosea 8:7

Agreed that the OP's suggestions are too heavy for my tastes, especially for a rifle to be carried. One of mine .35's wears a 19" barrel with about a .620" muzzle diameter. My other is more like your Mauser contour, 24" and about a .580" muzzle. Both carry nicely but are heavy enough to shoot well in the field. Aut vincere aut mori
