Tex8435 whelen barrel contour
To optimize accuracy and carry weight, does anyone have recommendations on barrel contour for a 35 whelen?
I’m considering a #4 or #5 contour by Benchmark. At 24 inches, the #4 has a muzzle diameter of .675 and the #5 has a muzzle diameter of .725.

surefire7Just my preference, but I'd take the smaller one. Maybe even a #3. Maybe smaller yet...
Is this a 'carrying' rifle, or a rifle to be used in a blind or short stalks?
If a carrying rifle, for greater distances, I'd go lighter. But that's just me. I'm old.

ColoradoMattI have a Mauser “Type A” Barrel in 9.3x62, and a complete original Type A rifle in the same caliber. Both have a muzzle diameter of .590”. DPCD has a Type A contour that is slightly heavier, and customer reports indicate excellent accuracy. You might talk to DPCD.

hogfarmerMine uses a #3 contour Shilen, 22.5" length. Built to drag around in swamps and thick brush.

Agreed that the OP's suggestions are too heavy for my tastes, especially for a rifle to be carried. One of mine .35's wears a 19" barrel with about a .620" muzzle diameter. My other is more like your Mauser contour, 24" and about a .580" muzzle. Both carry nicely but are heavy enough to shoot well in the field.
