I guess I dont get that concerned with "speed" of the bullet. I am more concerned with accuracy and bullet energy. Bullet speed=energy but faster isnt always better,
so i would agree with your statement.
Thanks
Greg

Another reason I've asked this is because I also have a 300 Win Mag. But the .06 have always been my go to.

It's been good to me so far. As long as one notes the actual drop and keeps the shot angles reasonable I would use it with confidence on any beasty of up to 300 kegs and out to 400 yards.

I wouldn't shoot big game any further than that but for the really big stuff I would like a tougher bullet.

180 Nosler Partition would be my one bullet everything. Next would be a Barnes TSX 165/168. Next would be a 180 Hornady BTSP. I currently use 165 BTSP out of my 06 but only shoot deer and coyotes but wouldn't hesitate to use it on elk or black bear.

Hello Guys, 30.06 is one of my favorite cardridges and I like his versatility. But honestly I would not shoot at a bear at 300 yards with a 30.06... However in this case I wuold choose a 180g like Nosler Partition, Lapua 185g Mega or similar...
Have a nice day

I have used 4831/165 NP for Deer, Elk,Kudu and Zebra. I reserve the 180/200 grain to my .300HH,I'm sure there are new bullets out there, but I'm an old guy and this has worked for me with success every time.

Hello Faina. Would you not use the .06 on bear at 300 yards because it exceeds your comfort zone or are you expressing that you don't trust the caliber on bear at that distance or what? I'm just curious. Just my opinion but if a 270 can take a deer at 700 meters with one shot, theoretically that puts an .06 at a 700+ meter rifle as well.

By the way, there's always something in me that says there's nothing more truthful when I read the words, "30.06 and 180 partition" inferring that it is one of the most perfect combinations. tu2

There are just so many great bullets available these days for us hunters. What I really do like about the partitions is that they open up very easily at what seems to be most any distance within reasonable hunting parameters.

I would. 180s & 200s are exactly what the doctor ordered, and IMR4831 would be a great choice to propel them.

I shoot lots of 165s because Remington component bullets are economical and my old Garand loves 'em! They don't offer much for a hunter that a 180 or 200 can't do better. Also, there is plenty of case capacity to drive 200s to reasonably flat trajectories. Perhaps Nosler's 200 grain partition is the single best bullet for 30-06s.

The rifle is to be used in the west hunting Deer, Elk and Bear. 100-300 yards.

Greg, 180 Nosler Partition at 2,750 - 2,800 fps.

I've used that bullet in the 30-06 to take all kinds of Western game including more than a couple bull elk.

Guess I am the only old school guy on this subject...

220 grain RN, 2500 to 2600 fps depending upon powder, and barrel lenght....

get that old RN moving, it is surprisingly flat shooting out to 300 to 350 yds...and when it gets there it will plow thru a lot of vitals, and tear the crap out of anything that gets in its way...and will pretty much exit...to leave a blood trail...

I prefer Sierra's over Hornady's.... but don't sell the Hornady short...

when I can find them, then the Nosler 220 grain SMP partition is a dandy also...especially when the games gets bigger and tougher...

Scott King,
I am aware the question was in regard to the Western USA, and not anywhere else as you put it but I assumed that most folks could compare or determine that African plains game and some Dangerous game could be cross referenced as to killing effect..I know a Lion is about as hard to kill as an Alaskan Bear or big black bear and the plainsgame of Africa is the same as our deer, antelope and elk..At least most could correlate that what caliber applied to one would apply to the other..My choice would still be the same.

I use 165 grain Swift A Frame, in front of 53.9 grains of IMR-4350, and Fed 210 Match Primers. Not a fast load, but very accurate. I have taken quite a bit of plains game with that load with great results.

Thank for all the opinions.
Thats just what I asked for.
The only real issue with load developement is that you cant but a box of 10. Would be nice if you could buy bullets "bulk" like screws in the hardware store....
Experimenting with 50 count bullets can get expensive.

Happy New Year to all.

200 gr Sierra Gameking, CCI250 primer, 54.5gr of IMR4350. Goes 2670 fps from my 24" barrel and shoots itty bitty groups everytime. Kills elk real good too. Smiler

Hello guys, honestly I never shot a bear and probably I never will do it. I trust the good old '30 very much and know his potential. But I think that at 300 yard you need to place the bullet really in the right place to kill a bear! A bear is probably strong like a wild boar, and stopping a 150-200 pounds wild boar at the first shot at 300 yards isn't so easy.

I used to use 180 grain SP interlocks and 57.5g of H4350 which got me 2817fps in my Husky, but lately I have changed to 180 grain Interlock Round Noses with 59g of H4831Sc for 2700fps in the same rifle.

That's on deer sized game, red stags, fallow, elk and Himalayan tahr.

My rifle: Howa 1500 stainless 30.06 heavy laminated stock.
My loads:
For roedeer and other animals up to 50 kg:
Hornady RN 150 gr in front of 57 gr. VVN 160
sighted in at +4 cm/100m
For wild boar and deer sized animals:
Nosler Partition 180 gr. propelled by 54 gr. VVN 160. These hit dead centre at 100 m.
Primers are CCI BR and brass is Norma.

I have no clue as to what speed these bullets leave my barrel. I assume both are moderate loads and I have been completely satisfied with their effects on game and other critters for many years.
