Will a .338-06 with Hornady bullets give the velocities listed in the Hornady manual. This is with a 24" barrel as per the manual. Thanks-Karl

Hornady makes a lot of bullets... what weight are you interested in?

My 22" bbl'd 338-06 did just at 2,700 fps with the 225 Hornady and 2,550 with the 250's. Both with H4350.

With H4350 Extreme I can get 2600 with 225's and right at 2450 with 250's in a 24" barrel. Pressure is moderate and NOT as high as the 210 NP WBY factory ammo. EVEN with 250's at a mere 2400 fps I shot through most everything I killed until I crono'd loads and boosted velocity up a hundred+ FPS.

If your gun shoots the 250's at 2450 I'd be happy. None of the elk I've ever shot have seemed to be able to notice a hundred fps difference with anything. It's ALL placement.

Personally my .338-06 is one of my favorite cartridges and rifles. Accurate plus Easy on the shooter. Penetrates like crazy and has killed everything from 80 pound impala through waterbuck, wildebeest, one good mature bull elk (at 300+ yds) to a big eland bull. ALL with single bullets too. Whats NOT to love about the round??

I have shot a lot of deer with my .338-06's. I use 250 or 225 gr hornadys or x bullets. Have never had to shoot more than once. Always get an exit wound, never had to track em.
This round really shines with the heavier bullets...try it, you will like it.

Ah, another potential convert to the great .338-06! I can't get Hornady bullets to do much better than 2" in my rifle, but you should have know real trouble matching Hornady's book vel. unless you get a slow bbl. Like Frank N. I have killed them small to tall w/ my .338-06, but I like the 210grNP @ 2750fps for all of my hunting. Allthough I could be talked into a 250gr @ 2450fps for the thick stuff where you are limited to 200-250 yds, they just penetrate like crazy.

I have not been able to get the 2900 Fps with the 200 grain bullet, but get 2750 to 2800 with the 225 grain bullet, and 2650 consistently with the 250 grainers.

You are in good company with a 338/06!

I have a 22-inch barrel on my .338-06. We couldn't quite get 2700 fps with the 225 gr Hornadys, but we did get over 2500 with 250 gr Sierras (one or the other of those was what I used on my moose a couple years ago, and we got several caribou with those, too).
My husband likes the Barnes X bullets, and that's what we went with for the lighter bullets. On the barnes X 175 gr bullets, we got 2960 fps using 4064. Both of us have shot caribou with the 175s.
It's a great caliber. We built the gun to fit me, but my husband shoots it too, even though he's got a .338.

The 225 gr Hornady SP is what I used in my 338-06 with IMR 4320. I killed alot game with this combination.
