Guys: Just got back from a long weekend vacation in Disney World with my son and wife (and grand pap). I will respond more tonight or tomorrow after I've gotten settled. Thanks, 577NitroExpress Double Rifle Shooters Society Francotte .470 Nitro Express If stupidity hurt, a lot of people would be walking around screaming...

DougtH9, I hear ya loud & clear. 577Nitro Express, Best of luck on your project. When it came down to it, I couldn't part out the gun for the action. Left it as is and bought another one for the project.

Gents: Brian: I want to thank you for the offer and understand not wanting to part the rifle out. It sounds like you have a beauty there. jjs: My friend, I am honored to have met you, hunted with you and now call you my friend. Your offer on this post humbles me; thank you! To the guys hijacking this thread to sling mud - I'm sorry this post about putting an heirloom rifle together for my beloved son brought this out. I apologize for starting this thread since it caused yet another mud-slinging tirade on AR. Now, back to the main topic: a barrel for my .30-06 project. Right now, I'm leaning either towards a Lilja or a Lothar Walther. So, if this thread will continue, what say you about these two fine barrels? 577NitroExpress Double Rifle Shooters Society Francotte .470 Nitro Express If stupidity hurt, a lot of people would be walking around screaming...

577, No need for you to be concerned about anything. Two guys chasing after their own tails..one even suggesting he was "sorry" but continued on...go figure. I know this is a "labor of love" and just wanted to be part of it, in some small way ... still do. When you get to the point of pinning down some of the finer details, send me a PM or give me a call..still would like to do something. Thanks

jjs: Thank you, my friend! You are very kind and when Ewan gets that gun into his paws for the first time, I will be sure to tell him that you had a part in it too. I'll keep you posted. 577NitroExpress Double Rifle Shooters Society Francotte .470 Nitro Express If stupidity hurt, a lot of people would be walking around screaming...

Would suggest you check out Krieger Barrels for they are generally regarded as first cabin products. Good Luck

I have a dozen or so custom barreled rifles, 1 kreiger, 2 shilen , the remainder douglas. At the beginning of the year I decided to rebarrel 2 rifles, 1 30'06 & 1 257 roberts. I ended up with a hart on the '06 & Lilja on the 257 because midway had the hart in stock & Lilja had the 257 in stock. I don't think there is any real hunting rifle difference in accuracy once you get past shaw/wilson but there is a lot of difference in delivery times. Midway's pricing is competative & do same day shipment on what they have in stock.

I think you made and excellent choice. The fact that you are freshing up an old rifle for your son makes it more classic to me. Does not seem to matter what the gun is worth or will be worth. Once that gun is handed over it will remain priceless forever.
