So I've been offered a trade for another rifle I have, and being a college student I'd really like to just sell the gun if it's a wise decision.

Here are the specs, I'm looking for a conservative value of what the rifle is worth, as in, what could I get for the rifle quickly? It's not my "type" of gun (I mostly like shooting long range) so it isn't necessarily worth keeping around for my tastes.

Specs:

Mauser 98 action, trued, aftermarket safety, bolt shroud, bolt handle

26" Shilen #5 contour chambered in 300 Win Mag

Timney Trigger

Hogue overmold stock

Leupy rings and bases

That's all I know. It looks like your average nice hunting rifle to me.

Thanks,
Tyler

I'm not an expert on Mauser 98 actions, so someone with more experience there than I may be able to give you a better answer, but I'd say the most you'll get for it is $700-800. That's not a popular action for custom builds. All the parts lose most of their value as soon as they hit the gun. The stock's not high end at all. The gunsmithing cost isn't going to be something that factors heavily into the price someone will pay except for something high-end or done by a real name gunsmith or maybe on a dangerous game rifle.

And you said quickly. That is going to cut the price a lot, I think. If by quick you mean right away or within a few weeks, I'd say you'd probably ought to be thinking around $350. It may have more trade value to you if what you're getting is relatively to you anyway worth much more or has good resale value.

Tyler we need to know which M98 action. Some like the spanish Lacorna I consider worthless while the DWM & FNs are top shelf.

There is no way that a seller can get back out of it what the gunsmithing alone must have cost. While with its Shilen barrel and upgraded action it may be much "more" gun than an off-the-shelf RemRuger plastic-handled discount store gun, the RemRuger is what sets/limits the price.

Most people would rather have a new, unfired RemRuger than a "used" Mauser. Unless the potential buyer is really smitten by the high-priced barrel, don't expect it to go for any more than the RemRuger.

lucky to get 50 cents on the dollar for build cost - or, if decent looking 400-700 - the better it looks and shoots, the higher up ..

but, the cost of the action, action work, barrel, install, stock, and gunsmithing .. 50 cents on the dollar is a good benchmark, unless it exceeds the 400-700 range --

unless, of course, you find THE guy that has to have this barrel, as a #5 is pretty heavy

It sounds like the perfect starter rifle for long range shooting. The 300 Win is popular around here, (Utah), The #5 barrel should be very accurate. I have two, one in a.270 win left at 26 inches and one in .243 thats cut off at 24. The Hogue stock is really a varmint type stock that shoots well off the bags so?? try to sell it to someone interested in long range and you may well get $600-$800. good luck, DW

I see CZ and Mauser 375's selling in the $700-800 dollar range and even then they are slow to sell.
If you put the rifle on Gunbrokers I would bet you couldnt break into the $600 range with it unless it was built off a quality Mauser to start with, no extra holes, etc.

Thanks everyone, that price range ($400-$700) is what I figured, but I wanted to be sure. I will hold off as I think my gun is more valuable.
