Are these the same calibers?

No. The 30cal.and is 7.62 metric and the 9.3 metric is 366 cal. The cases are close but not the same

Significantly different bullet weights too. Typically the 30.06 will shoot 165 and 180 grain bullets (you can go up to 220 grains and down to 110 grains). The 9.3x 62 will typically shoot 250 to 286 grain bullets at a lower velocity. Still gets the job done though. The 9.3 is a fine caliber! Peter. Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Bullet diameters: .277 inches = 6.82mm (.270 Win, .270 Wby) .284 = 7mm (.280 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag) .308 = 7.62mm (.30-06, .308 Win, 300 WM) .338 = 8.33mm (.338-06, .338 Win Mag) .366 = 9.3mm (9.3X62, 9.3X64)

http://www.accuratepowder.com/loaddata_caliber_rifle_standard.htm This gives you a good idea as to Bullet dia. Seems as though AA has a 257 typo.

ahh! a stupid question! I've asked a few of them myself, my belief is if you don't ask you don't receive. 2 different beasts they are.

One should compare .35 Whelen and 9,3x62. The Whelen has couple of real disadvantages: lack of factory rifles with virtues of CZ550 and factory loaded ammo with premium slugs of heavier weight. The 250gr Core Lockt just can't morph into premium Norma Oryx slug of 285 grains. I can think of couple Whelen chambered rifles Remington 'Classic' and good ole' Ruger 77 with tang safety. These in minty condition are probably elevated into collector status. The difference between two cartridges loaded with slugs of medium weight is about 50m/s in favor of the German round.

Well. The 9,3x62 also has a few disatvantages if you compare it to the 9,3x64,but then the 375 H&H is even better. Not to mention the .416's

I would hunt Buffalo with a 30-06 and a good stout bullet if I had nothing else, but the 9.3x62 is much, much better any way you cut it.. The 9.3x62 is better compared to the .375 H&H. The 9.3x62, in a long 26 or 27 inch tube, can send a 320 gr. Woodleigh at near or at 2400 FPS with a proper handload of RL-15 in a modern bolt action. My fav ammo supplier carries 350gr Swede ammo that pushes 350gr. Woodleigh 'Weldcore' at 2300fps out of .375H&H hole (probably 24" test barrel).

The 9.3x62 is almost a 375 H&H, and can get bullets up to 320 grs. It is a very efficient csrtridge for its size. Of course at nominal loadings, it also recoils more like a 375 than a 30-06. They are not really comparable. ------------------------------- Will / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. I'm not sure what you mean by better, but its surely not powerwise. I think its reasonable to believe that the larger case and larger diameter of the 375 will give some power advantages when everything else is similar. I also think that if you get 2400 fps with 286 gn bullets in the 9,3x62 you should be happy with that. What I really meant with my first post was that a little bigger or a little smaller doesnt really matter that much. To me its about using what you got to its full potential (the last statement only applies to riflecalibers

The original question and comments compared the 06 with the 9.3x62, and the 9.3 is clearly the winner although at the expense of more recoil. TNSTAAFL. The 9.3 doesn't have as many beans as a 375HH, but, again, the 375HH has more recoil. As a heavy light rifle or light medium rifle, the 9.3x62 is hard to beat. The good news is that more people are discovering it, and this is leading to more rifles and more bullets being available. Kudude

Sorry about that. The .358 comes out roughly to 9mm and the .35 Whelen is one of the many great cartridges for it.

My chronographs sez: 9.3x62: 320 gr, bullet at 2400 FPS 375 H&H: 300 gr. bullet at 2500 FPS Both loads are mild and accurate in my rifles, if that is not comparible then I will eat my hat..and yes I understand that you can load a 9.3x62 or a .375 hotter, but I won't nor do I need to...Also I undersand that you can load the .375 with 350 gr. Woodlieghs at almost 2400 FPS and that puts the .375 over the top I suppose.. So lets just say for my purposes they are comparible..
