That's a very scary thought.....and believe me I'm quivering in my boots about it.....but the thought of having to confront them with a Savage.....well...that causes me to go back in the house and change my pants. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." vapodog: I never knew that you were so sophisticated. I am sure that H&H will make you one for $75K. Would that make you ALL happy? PS; Are you going to put down jimatcat and his 70s because it is a PF?

Nope...not at all.....I've posted very positive and on several occasions about Winchester PF actions. As a matter of fact I have posted to the effect that in most cases I actually prefer them. IMO they are among the finest one can make a custom from. Savage however.....well....that's an entire new ball game! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I've wanted to post on this for days but haven't been able to. Now, finally! I've had both the CZ550 and now a custom job. My CZ550 is a great rifle. Bought it off an AR member from Alaska, just so I could take it back to Alaska for a Grizzly hunt. I had it glass bedded and free floated (IIRC). Called Brownells and they suggested a few items to weatherproof the metal along with the inside and outside of the stock. It did very well up north. Then it took a Utah spike elk upon return to the lower 48. For a stock CZ550 it has a nice piece of wood too. The previous owner installed a nice set of NEGC irons. If you like the CZ550 but want it tricked out a bit contact AHR to have them add their stock and a M70 wing safety. Earlier this year I wanted a full custom so I bought a 1952ish Pre 64 M70 action and had Lee Christianson of Baldwin, WI do the metal work followed by Charley Santoni of CS Sports/Woodland, CA who finished it with Midnight Purple Cerakote and a D'Arcy Echols Legend stock. It's a frickin tack driver too. All up, it ran me a bit over $3k. Alan

Well I caught the 9.3 bug a few years ago and just after that I had a Zastava action fall into my hands cheap (no Rem or Charles Daly stamps)found a bolt for it collected a FN or Higgins bottom metal, Timney trigger, Gentry 3 position safety, cheap Wilson pre-chambered 20" lightweight barrel, sights and a plastic stock Warne steel bases and Warne QD rings. Took the whole mess to my local Gunsmith who put it all together and blued it for me, I bedded it and painted/textured the stock and I have a shooter! It weighs 7 pounds 14 ounces with the 2-7 Nikon Monarch scope on it. If I recall I had about $690 in parts (no scope)before taking it to the Gunsmith and I can't remember what he charged to put it all together and blue it. I could have saved a lot by going with a cheaper safety but I can't stand the Buehler style safety so 3 position it was for me. Someday I'll spring for a nice wooden stock for it but for now I have a nice rifle assembled from parts. For me part of the fun was the collection of the items although I must admit I think buying one off the shelf or buying a rifle and having a rebore or rebarrel done would have been cheaper.

I checked the Ruger website after reading this and found nothing. No mention of it under "new" rifles and no mention under "dealer special" runs. So this makes me curious is this a rumor or is Ruger slow to put up the new stuff on their website? They show the 9.3x74 in a #1 though..

My guess is Ruger is slow to update their website. I know I bought a 338 Federal Hawkeye before it was ever listed on the website. I had to confirm with the seller on Gunbroker that it wasn't a misprint.

I have posted this on another thread some years ago. My Simson M98 made before 1912. it was badly rusted / pitted on the outside with stock damage but the bore was mint and the checkering was very sharp! So I put a new stock and had it restored with rust bluing. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

Lipseys often commissions guns from Ruger that are not regular catalog items. The .44 spl Vaquero for example. I think I'd forgo the Ruger in favor of a CZ if I HAD to have a factory rifle. Aut vincere aut mori

The Ruger African in 9.3x62 would be a great rifle! The African is a sweet feeling rifle and in the 9.3 I don't believe that there'd be any concern about recoil or stock cracks.

All the Ruger distributors, not just Lipsey, are gearing up for the new 9.3x62 African. Ruger has already assigned a manufacturing ID number to the rifle. Ruger will not make any announcement until the release of the new catalog. This is standard operating procedure on their part.

I have a Blaser R-93 and Sauer 202 in 9.3x62, and dearly love them both. My Sauer barrel is a Peterson rebore that I bought from Dr Lou and had Tip at Canyon Sporting Arms cut it down and install Recknagel sights. If I were starting over and just getting into a 9.3, I would go the Blaser R-93 route again. The Sauer barrel is on a lightweight frame, and the recoil is pretty stiff.

OH Boy ! a 9.3 discussion!! About 15 years ago, I fell into the 9.3x62 band wagon, by mistake, those early years were hard on us lonely bunch of 9.3 owners. It all started when I became addicted to California pig hunting, back then. I either had a .30-06 or a .340 Weatherby to hunt with. I started my quest for the perfect in between Pig rifle. At the time, Craig Bodington was talking up the .348 Win, .358 Win or the .35 Whelen as the perfect pig rifle. So, I started looking for one of those. Stopped in a gun shop in Boulder CO that kinda specialized in European rifles, and caibres. I told the owner I was looking for a .35 Whelen. He asked if I considered the 9.3? He called it the European .35 Whelen. I ended up leaving that shop with a Sako Manlicher Carbine in 9.3x62 and with his only two boxes of ammo in 9.3x62, RWS 235g and a box of 286 gr. It shot wonderfuly. My only source of brass at the time was trips to South Africa, with a trip to the gunshop at Gold Reef City. Within a year I bought a Sako TRG-S , that rifle is the best shooting rifle I own. Then a CZ Manlicher , another TRG-S that I keep in California. Lastly, a Styre Prohunter. The TRG-S has made two trips to africa. My PH said I am the first american to show up with a sensible rifle. Needless to say, those early years were frustrating. Took about a year to find a set of dies. Just happened to find a box of Speer 270gr bullets in a small gun shop, covered in dust. Within two years, Nosler started to make bullets, first the 286 Partition. The most useless bullet made for that rifle. I took them to RSA in 2001 and they suffered from lead separation with the first two animals I shot. Luckily, I bot a few boxes of DMW in Jo'burg loaded with woodleigh 286s. They worked great. Now, I have about every 9.3 bullet one can get for the 9.3. I have done a lot of wet news paper tests. I like the 250 Grn Swift and the 235 Rhino (out of RSA) the best. The newer Barns expand alot better than the old ones.

At this point in time you have the abilty to choose a significant step up in 9.3 performance I'm told the numbers EQUAL 375H&H perf. with the kick of a 35Whelen. Off the shelf, stock Sako 85 in 370SakoMag (9.3x66) Go with Barnes 286gr Triple Shock. One ragged hole out of the box. Very handsome rifle. Federal factory ammo.

Spot on - my thoughts exactly - with 2 scopes :1-4x and 3-12x it is as close to "BS-less" weapon as you can get - add anything on this and rifle begins to grow "fat/crap" on it

I purchased a gently used CZ-550 American off gunbroker for $600. It was glass bedded with dual cross bolts and factory rings. My rebarreled 338-06 cost about that much for just the barrel and mounting to a remington donor action. That 9.3x62 deal is one I don't think I will be able to match again - whole lot of rifle goodness for very little money. I really like the 9.3X62. There are a few cartridges that just belong in certain rifles and the 9.3X62 is one of them. I think it's history is one of the neatest things about it. For me in belongs in a Mauser M98 action. Not that putting it any other action is wrong, it just seems more "right" to me. Kind of like a classic Springfield chambered in a .35 Whelen or .257 Roberts Here's mine. It was a fun but frustrating project. 1909 Argentine action, L/W barrel and homemade stock. I very much like the idea of building one. Terry -------------------------------------------- Well, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Lipseys is a distributer in the USA. They have a Ruger Hawkeye listed in 9.3x62 at their website. I have been looking at it for a month, but recently go my CZ fixed, so now the need has diminished. I now have a steel floorplate and follower for my CZ 550 FS, which was supplied free of charge by CZ-USA. It just took forever to get here on a ship from Europe.

Ngnaga, I'm a gunwhore. I'll admit it. I'm kinda like a drunk in a bar at closing time. Ya know how (at least I seem to remember 35 years or so ago) the women seem to get prettier around closing time and you're by yourself. Well I'm like that when it comes to bolt guns and single shots. Its seldom that I encounter a rifle in/on which there isn't something that calls to me. And as Popeye says, I yam what I yam. I usually succumb. Best GWB

If you want to build, here is a start: http://www.gunbroker.com/Aucti....aspx?Item=215852657 I bought mine (and two other VZ24 actions) from this guy. Who in the world had a need for bull barreled 9.3x62s? I had my local gunsmith turn down the barrel to a reasonable contour and it shoots nice tiny groups. I sent the action to Jim Kobe for a 2 position M70 safety. Be forewarned, it is advertised as being drilled and tapped for Warne mounts. I haven't been able to find Warne bases that fit the rear ring holes (one of the rear ring holes has to be filled and redrilled. The bolt is forged, and I would give the job average marks. I'm having a new bolt handle welded on. BUT, for 300 bucks to start with, I got a tack driver that I'm building on. Got a 1909 Argentine trigger guard for 75 bucks on Gunbroker. I also put a Bold trigger that I had laying around. At the moment it is on a sporterized VZ-24 stock, and the next step is either a piece of nice walnut or a McMillan stock (Alaska weather favors the McMillan at the moment). Build or buy, it's just time and money... Dave

CZ makes a great 9.3X62 and now Ruger makes on in their African line. Either would be a great choice. RCBS makes dies. You can get Graf brass through Brownells and bullets for Barnes, Swift, Nosler, Hornady, and others. It is a fantastic caliber in a lightweight portable rifle.
