There have been quite a few discussions on these rifles, one was several days ago. Suggest you use the "Find" function.

Ho If it is the Model 1200 it would have a commercial action made by Santa Barbra. There should be no thumb slot. The Santa Barbra action may not be quite as smooth as the FN action so it is not as highly regarded as the FN. However it is still a very good rifle if you have a smooth one.I have owned a number of them, some with the detachable magazine and some with the hindged floorplate. Never had any trouble with any of them. They all shoot pretty good. If the rifle is chambered in a mag caliber and fired with the guard screws not properly tightened I have seen them crack the stock behind the tang. Check for a crack there. That can be easily repaired by glass bedding. I still have 5 or 6 PH rifles and all have been glass bedded and have given 0 problems. Hope that helps

This one is 30-06. I,m sure its a Santa Barbara action. This one has an exceptional piece of wood on it. Ashing price at local shop is $ 495. thanks

$495 is not a steal but if there is nice wood and the bore looks good and the action is smooth, that not a bad price.

I've had a few over the years. They have always been what they look like and are priced like...... a decent, serviceable rifle for those of us without deep pockets. I can assure you there are many just like the one you are looking at that have been in service for many years. As Snowman said, that is not a great price....... in these days of poor economy I see lots of them for sale in good condition for about $400 CAD. ______________________________________________ The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who are bereft of that gift.

Hi, Parker Hale 1200 (300WM) was my first rifle in 1979: accurate and reliable ![]() In addition the trigger was gold plated ![]() Indeed the Santa Barbara action is probably not so smooth than an FM or custom but the ratio quality /price is fine IMO

I had a PH 1200 Safari .308 ,back around 1978. It was my first Stalking rifle. Here, with my first Red stag. ![]() As others have said, not the smoothest of actions, but a solid, accurate, reliable rifle. Hammer forged barrel, gold plated, adjustable trigger, drop floor plate magazine. I glass bedded mine, and would probably still have it, had it not been stolen. Steve.

I've had, off and on, Parker Hale rifles. Be aware that sometimes the chambers are cut "sloppy" in that the fired case may have significantly greater expansion just above the web than others. I had, at the same time, two P-Hale M81 Classic rifles both in .270 WCF. Fired cases from the one would NOT chamber in the other. So if you can test fire it first and examine the fired case. As SNOWMAN and SKYLINE say the price seems OTT for what are considered "Cinderella" rifles. In the UK these things struggle to make much over £250 (UK POUNDS).

I started a thread a week or two ago about a 1200 .270 that I picked up a little while ago. Mine was a little rough around the edges but in good mechanical condition and I paid $250 with a Simmons Pro-Hunter scope already on it. I spent some time cleaning it up and had a buddy polish the bolt. It looks pretty nice now and think I could probably get $350-400 out of it closer to hunting season if I wanted to. The only thing I don't like about them is the square style fore-end. I have always shot rugers, winchesters, and remingtons for the most part and the blocky forend on the PH just doesn't feel right.

Faux Weatherby or, "bastardised" Weatherby we call it in UK. Does it have, ouch, skip line chequering, whiteline spacer and a rosewood fore-end? Classic 1970s P-Hale! But...fear not... a good stock working gunsmith can round off the fore-end. Or even a good woodworker. It'll look totally different. Or you can just replace the stock.

I always thought it was the Brits who came up with "basket weave" checkering. ![]() .

Funny you mention a woodworker rounding off the stock... My neighbor has done a little stock re-finishing for me and I asked him about rounding off the forend last week. He is willing and able but for it to look right we probably need to sand out the checkering on the grip as well. Not a huge issue but those stocks had a slight palm swell which I kinda like. I think that would be lost since those limeys cut the checkering so blasted deep ![]()

I have two Parker Hale rifles, both are Santa Barbara actions. One is a 1200 with the good plated trigger in .270 Win. The other is a .243 with Midland Arms imported by Jana Arms Denver CO stamped on the barrel. They were the first big game rifles I bought and I picked both up for less than $500. But I bought the .243 in 1990 and the .270 in 96 when I came home from the Army. Neither are much to look at, but they are solid hunting rifles. I've killed a lot of game with both rifles, but the .270 is my favorite. I need to put a new barrel on the .243 one of these days as it's about a 3 minute rifle anymore, but I'll pass them down to the daughter or a grandkid someday.

Oh man, the Parker-Hale 1200 was my first big game rifle back in 1976 when I was in high school. I still remember the day I bought it: my dad drove me, my brother, and a pal to downtown MSP and he headed to work. We watched the movie "Midway" hung around the city, then my dad picked us up where we went to the gunshop to pick up my new rifle. Mine was a 7mm Rem Mag; wish I still had that rifle, even though I fell out of love with the Weatherby look. IMO the action is smoother than Mark X's but not even close to Mod 70s. Accuracy was nothing to write home about but not terrible.
