Just kind of an oddball question.........
If you were only allowed to own two rifles to hunt all of North america and Canada what caliber would they be? And If you could ad a third for Africa?

.308 win
.338 win
and not that I will ever get to Africa >375 H&H

Thanks,

Pretty well have to go with .375 H&H as the 'extra' rifle for Africa. Now, if you're gonna let me 'cheat' and use the 'African' rifle for dangerous North American game too then I'll take a 30-06 and a .250 Savage as my other 2 rifles. If I'm not 'allowed' to use the .375 in N.A. then I'll take a .270 Win and a .338 Win as my 2 N.A. rifles.

Dr. Lou
That's a tough one but I would probably go with:

6.5x55 or 7-08
375 H&H

I can't do it!

I'll give up the "African" for another!
22-250
25-06 or 7mm08 (it would be a tough choice)

I dunno, this leaves me without a gopher gun, but I could live with:
.257 Weatherby or .284 win.
9.3 X 64 or .375
and for bigger stuff in Africa,
.450X400 or .470

Not much in the world that can't be done with a 243Win and 375H&H. Maybe change the 243Win for a 25/06?
Cheers...

Well I already own every rifle caliber that I could imagine that I would ever need and I know I couldn't give any of them up as most fall into some specific nitch roles that I can't imagine being without, but if all but two had to go away I would keep my 22/250 and my 30/06. The 22/250 has obvious uses for varmints and targets but where legal I've also enjoyed incredible success with it on Deer and Antelope when using Barnes x and triple shock bullets.
As for the 30/06 it has taken all my best heads of game with 180 grain bullets, many Elk, Deer Antelope a Bighorn Sheep a Mtn Goat, Coyotes, Marmots and you name it. I would not hesitate to use this rifle on Moose and the big Bears either so that covers the continent pretty well for me.
If an Africa trip were to be had I would bring along the 30/06 for plains game and my .375 H&H for anything else I would care to hunt.
Thats it one world 3 rifles.

My choices for North America would be the king of the .224 calibers, the 22-250 and the king of the .308 calibers, the 300 Weatherby Magnum.

My Africa cartridge would be the 375 H&H Magnum.

I would scratch the 22-250 and 416 for NA and Canada. I'm not much of a fur hunter or rodent shooter and a honestly a 416 isn't truly needed for anything on this continent.

I would add the 416 back for Africa.

If I were a young guy starting to build a collection with a primary focus on North America I'd start with a .308 or 30-06 and a .338 Win Mag. I'd hide a .223 in the back of the safe for varmits too.

Then I added heavier mediums like the 9,3x74R, 9,3x62 and the .375 H&H. You'd certainly be set for Plains Game at this point.

After that when DG in Africa was closer at hand I'd add some heavier rifles like the .416 Rigby, one of the .458s and maybe a .470 or .500 NE.

That's actually almost how I did grow the collection over time. A good stainless .375 of moderate weight could replace the .338 WM and be very useful for the largest of NA species.

Have very much enjoyed the trip to the current situation. Of all of the rifles I have I like the pre-64 M70 in .338 WM and the 9,3x62s for NA hunting. A pair of DRs in 9,3x74R and .470 NE is ideal for me. I do like the bigger bolt guns too ... can't fault the .416 Rigby cartidge or the .458 AR cartridge in any way.

    2. .338-06 for everything from elk to grizzly

    3. For Africa.....I'm stepping up to the .375 Ruger!

If I could have only 2 centerfire rifles in NA, I would have a .243 Winchester and a .300 Win Mag. Hopefully, I could have a .22 LR too.

If I could only take 1 rifle to Africa and DG was to be hunted, I would certainly take a .375 H&H. But if I had my .300 Win Mag for NA already and could take it along, I might take a .458 Win Mag for my third for Africa.
