I'm with Gene... If I had a 300 H&H I would probably retire my 300 Win Mag.

I have a 1953 winchester M70 300 H&H. I've owned other 300 mags but the 300 H&H is the only 300 mag I now own. It fills the bill for anything the mag is needed for although I still prefer the 338 Win mag for most of the bigger stuff.

There is a pre-64 300 H&H sitting at the local gunshop right now.

$1300 with a scope.

If I can run into one, I'll get it to pair it with my 375 H&H

No luck so far though.

I love classic calibers .

As so far we have 18 shooters with the H&H and 19 "for the rest". WE ARE LOOSING GROUND HERE.......NOT GOOD, NOT GOOD

I know everybody loves the Winnie, but I have a 721 and you could get 3 for the price of a pre-64.
Some are ugly, yes but I think mine looks pretty nice even with the $40 unertl hawk scope...

My 300 H&H is also a Remmy 721 and I restocked it to allow a good scope picture.....It's a real great shooter and I'd be hard pressed to trade it for a M-70.....a Pre 64...maybe....but I'd want to look in it's mouth first.

The Remmy 721 shoots truly exceptional.

Howdy. Working with my third .300 H&H, a Steyr-Mannlicher, and it is the most accurate .30 caliber rifle I have ever fired, will shoot half inch groups all day (as long as I do my part). The trouble appears to be with my full length reloading dies which are over working the base of the brass and causing case failures after 3 reloads. Looks like I have to shift to neck sizing only. Overall, the .300 H&H is a breeze to work with, and Lordy is it accurate.

I haven't seen many at all in my neck of the woods. It is too expensive to turn my M1917 action into a 300 H&H. It is a great round. I prefer old school rounds but 300H&H's are too hard to find. I went over to the dark side and bought a 300 Weatherby Magnumb.
Turns out the Weatherby round isn't no youngster. It was developed in 1944.

I'm not much on Pre-64's but really wanted a .300H&H. I used my 7mm M-70 Classic as a starting point for a .300H&H. It's my "go to" rifle now.

Taking the 300 with me to Montana tomorrow for muleys .

I took my first (and only) Mulie with a .300 H&H Browning Safari! One round field dressed the critter since the shot was in cover at about 30 yards. That was in Colorado at 10,000 feet too.

I would be afraid of short-stroking a 300 H&H since most of my rifles are 30-06 length.

Those aren't bad numbers considering that your comparing one cartridge against a bunch of others.

I recently purchased my first 300H&H, an old semi-custom FN Deluxe. Shoots like a house of fire, very accurate.

I'll shoot a 300 H&H when the right one shows up- haven't seen one in a local shop and am too slow on the keys to grab the ones on the internet. SDhunter, do you have a number for that gunshop?

I too agree that the numbers don't look all that bad considering that you're putting the grand H&H up against all other 30 cal mags. Of coarse there are probably several factors at play here including the type of shooters who generally frequent these boards and the fact that the title of this thread is likely to draw in fans of the H&H.

I was one of those shooting the "others" 308 norma and 300 wby. I'd LOVE to add an H&H to my battery, but as others have said the right gun has not come along. I did thoroughly enjoy the comment wondering if H&H's only existed on the internet. Sure feels like it sometimes!!!

I'm thinking more and more that the best way to get one is have a 375 H&H rebarreled to it's smaller brother!

My Brother in-law is a BIG Norma Magnum fan. Both the .308 and .358 are his favorites for everything he hunts in Alaska. The .308 Norma has a long reputation for accuracy not to mention an excellent big game cartridge. From the mid 1960’s to the end of the 1970’s it was well known on the 1,000 yard match circuit. I almost bought one in 1984 but got a great deal on a new German made Mark V Deluxe .300 Weatherby so I added it to the one I already had. One can never have enough Weatherby rifles. Lawdog

Anyway.......welcome to the .300 H&H club

Have two, a Hart barreled Sako that was originally a way too light .375 H&H,hence the rebarrel.
The second is a 1955 era M70 that was fired maybe 12 times prior to me getting it two years ago. With 180 RP Core-Loks it will do an even inch at 100 yds. Still need to bloody the Winchester. The Sako has accounted for several deer and elk, very accurate.

If a 180 gr at 3000+ fps isn't enough, adding a few more hundred feet per second isn't going to solve the problem.

Have mine , it is a 1958 Model 70 with a leupold 3x9 scope. Had a hirline crack in the stock right at the back bolt and some rough spots on the stock. My gunsmith recut the checkering,fixed the crack,bedded the action and hand finished the stock with 20 coats of finish, it is absolutly beautiful and shoots 7/8" groups with 180gr bullets. It is as close to a custom rifle as I will get but it looks so classic.

My 300H/H is a 1953model 70Winchester and is stock except for a decelerator pad....it had one of the old white line vented pads on it when I got it...it has the early MC style stock and the bore -throat looks like new...got 5 boxes of ammo from a closing gun shop and lucked out and ordered 100 unprimed cases just before the current shortage due to inbetween production runs of less popular brass/ammo.....good luck and good shooting!!

I have a pre-64 Model 70 .300 H&H and a Remington Model 721 .300 H&H. I love the old calibers. However, I also shoot the .300 Win. Mag., & the Weatherby .300. To be honest, though, I probably use the Win. Mag. the most.

I shoot the H&H and a .308 Norma. The Win. & Wby are just too common for my tastes....

That's like saying, you wouldn't know what to do with 7 inches because you're used to working with 5 inches. You would make do with what you had in "hand". Anyone can have a 300H&H. Some just choose not to spend what it takes to own one.

Have owned a bunch of .300 H&H's, including a Pre-'64 M70 "Bull Gun", a Remmie 700 Classic, a Pre-War M70 "standard weight", and some others.

Roy Weatherby rechambered the Pre-War M70 H&H to .300 WBY in the late '40's, and I am not the least bit sad about that. I load it with 83 grns. H-4831 and 180 gr. NPs most of the time...the rest of the time with 200 gr. partitions and up to 95 grs. of TCI 5050. Shoots both well under MOA and is a "death ray" on elk.

I've sold the other .H&H's, and now shoot the .300 Wby, a Ruger #1V in .300 Win Mag, and an original Newton re-barreled to .30-338 Mag. Haven't found any reason other than nostalgia to go back to the vanilla H&H version.

I'd be perfectly happy with the H&H if I didn't have the others, but I do have them and they all work just as well or better for me.

Have 2 .300 Win Mags. Like'm both!!! But I recently found a vintage old pre-war M-70 in .300 H&H. Now I am like Ray Atkinson, .300 H&H is best .300 Mag I have found!

I thought I would revisit this subject. It has been another seven years and the .300 H&H isn't dead yet.

Gun writers regurgitate each others stories and comments ad nauseam. A simple look at the titles of articles in Guns & Ammo, Shooting Times, Hunting, Rifleshooter, etc. reveals a cyclical reoccurrence of the same material numerous times over past decades. Yes, decades! It is so bad that sometimes myth or misinformation gets repeated to the point that it becomes generally accepted as fact. Any new rifle or cartridge is written of as a thing of warship because the writers are desperate for new and original material.

Several years ago some gun writers wrote articles specifically about the 300 H&H being obsolete. It seemed that every new .30 caliber or .300 cartridge that came along was better and better than that "obsolete" 300 H&H.

Today's writers are still repeating each others stuff and still regurgitating what was written by authors long dead, including statements about the obsolescence of the 300 H&H. People read these articles, take the written word as gospel, and join in to beat the same drum over and over. But the 300 H&H never left us and, since the original posting of this Poll, there has been an increased interest in the cartridge.

Winchester and Remington, like Ruger, have been touting new 30 caliber wonder cartridges they have millions invested in. Competition is fierce. So, it is no surprise that they stopped or reduced production of 300 H&H ammunition. Yet the 300 H&H is still popular and the need for ammo still exists. That need is being met and, in the process, we are now beginning to see updated loads made with modern powders to produce modern ballistics.

Nosler, for example offers 300 H&H in five different loads. Their two 180gr loads are "modern" with a listed velocity of 2950fps. Five loads for the 300 H&H may not seem like much but Nosler only offers four loads for the 30-06, and three loads for the 300 Winchester Magnum - two cartridges nobody seems to think are obsolete. HSM also produces five different "modern" loads, including 180gr loads at 3000 fps and a 200gr load at a whopping 2850 fps! Federal produces three loads and Hornady still carries it in their product line.

People are still making rifles in 300 H&H and I would bet it is one of the top asked for chamberings in custom rifles.
