SchauckisMost punch out of short action
As per the title: which caliber that fits into a short action (.308 length) is the most powerful?
.350 Rem.mag is my guess.

rickt300Maybe the 376 Steyr.

Hand loaded .450 Marlin is my guess!

GrenadierIn a factory loaded cartridge I think you will find the .450 Marlin about as much as you can get.
"Hornady loads the .450 Marlin with a 350-grain flatpoint bullet at 2,100 fps. Brockman provided some ammunition for the bolt-action rifle loaded a bit hotter--a 300-grain Barnes XFB bullet at 2,360 fps, a 350-grain Barnes at 2,250 and a 400-grain Swift A-Frame at 2,150."
Artidle about a bolt action rifle chambered in 450 Marlin
.
In an non wildcat, probably the Rigby based
.416 Maverick. ...or;..

I like the idea of the 376 Steyr necked up to 405 bullets. The short 405 bullets will fit in a 2.9" magazine length and has the same capacity as the 405 Win but can be loaded to higher pressure so 300 @ 2400+
400-284 Win?

analog_peninsulaApparently a number of people have done .416x.350 Remington wildcats; it seems a comparatively easy conversion. That said, I have no particular desire to convert my 673 as the cartridge would seem to have very limited utility, while the .350 Remington does most things very well.

The 350 Rem mag case is belted.
Do you want to consider a non-belted case?

Schauckis"Consider" is the wrong term here as I'm not really considering; merely asking out of curiosity/academic interest.
I'm toying with the thought of a good caliber combo for short action guns although I probably never will acquire any as I'm a lever action man.

Dr. Lou,
I had the 358 Win in mind when I made my previous post.

enfieldsparesI would guess 284 Winchester as it probably has the greatest ratio of muzzle velocity to bullet weight of any of these "short" cartridges.

2ndtimerI would think the .325 Win Short Mag would also weigh in as one of the most potent non belted short action cartridges.
Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.

Since I've worn myself out on Wildcats, that was my pick. It is a VERY Adequate Cartridge for Deer, Hogs and Black Bear.
Hearing protection is definitely required with a 20" barrel. I doubt it will ever get re-barrelled, but if it did, I'd have at least 22" and possibly 24" out there to hold the noise away a bit more.

thndrchiken338 Ruger Compact Magnum, 225 gr bullet at 2750 fps.

boom stickCon is making a 358-300 RCM. The 300 RCM is longer. The necked up 35-300RCM will have about 75 grains capacity or about the same as the 35 Whelen AI since the 300 RCM has 72.7 grains capacity. Rechamber a 35 Rem Mag.
