I'll go first. I am breaking in a new Kimber 8400 in .270 with a Swarovski 3x-9x scope. I hope to also Christen a Husqvarna 98 Mauser in 9.3x57 with a Schmidt & Bender 1 1/4x-4x. Two vastly different firearms for the whitetail problem.

RSM 458,

Nice build and nice rifle. I built this Winchester 4 or 5 years ago.

- SS Winchester Model 70 Classic action, blueprinted, with a Williams extractor.
- Trigger set to 3 pounds
- Williams one piece SS bottom metal with the Obendorf style magazine release.
- .338 wm Pacnor #4 weight sporter contour 26" SS supermatch grade barrel, fluted.
- Macmillan Hunter stock.
- Nightforce 2.5-10 x 32 scope with the NPR2 reticle. Nightforce rings and mounts.

The picture below shows it with an elk I took this fall.

Your rifle sounds great. I can't see your picture though. I am working on another M70 like this one in 375 Ruger. It has been barreled by Pacnor and drilled for 8x40 scope base screws. It will be a very light 375 when I finish it.

Good looking rifle and congradulations on your elk. How do you like the Nightforce mounts?

I very much like the Nightforce rings and mounts. Very well made.

I am buying some new mounts this winter though. I originally had a 3.5-15x50 on this rifle and the mounts are meant to clear that larger scope. I will buy a lower profile mount so that the way my cheek ride the stock feels better with this lower profile scope.

I guess i'll hunt with my "go to gun", and see if i can make it number 26th "one shot kill on big game" in a row.

It's a Krieghoff Semper, 16-16 8x57jrs, loaded with 200NP's at 2,550fps. It has an auto flip up iron sight when you select the rifle bbl.,

I also have two scopes for it in claw mounts, the latest one a 3x9 Zeiss, that i like very much...

I've harvested everything from moose and bear on the big end,

To deer, havolina, turkey and coyote on the smaller end,

I'll probably hunt later on with my Chapuis DR a bit too...

For Antelope I put another notch in my old Mark X .257 AI shooting a 115 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet at 3156 fps. It's topped with a Leupold 6x.

That's also the rifle that I use for deer.

For elk I'm carrying my .300 Weatherby Vanguard wearing a 4-12x Leupold and shooting 168 gr Barnes TSX bullets moving out at 3290 fps.

If you'd asked me 6 weeks ago, I'd have taken my .375 H&H out to Texas for Whitetail. Now I'm not so sure!

My Ruger #1 is shooting 145gr. HotCore's at 2,750 fps into 1/2" groups. My new to me 300H&H is coming along very well, delivering 165gr. Horn. IL's at 3,115 fps into 1" groups, with two shots touching. The .375 delivers a 300 gr. Sierra at 2,550 into 3/4" groups.

I've kinda reached the point of "done playing" with the .375. It simply loves 300 gr. bullet and 80.0 gr. of H4350. Doesn't seem to matter if the bullet is a Horn IL, SGK or Partition - it's going to group 3/4" if I can hold onto it. It's short (20" bbl) so it fits into a blind as easy as the No. 1. Topped with an e-dot 3-10x44 Burris Euro-D, I can go hoggin' late into the night.

The big plus is that it's a "virgin"! Yep, that's right. It's never been blooded. So there's a certain joy in that.

So, it has little to do with accuracy. I suppose it's just going to depend on which rifle I'm "feeling" the moment I leave the door to head to Texas in 26 days! dancing

Regards,

Robert

I would not complain about having to use my M70 Pre.64 over a Kimber. I have always wanted an orginal Alaskan in 338.

You're a lucky man in my opinion.

I used my .257 Roberts for a small whitetail buck this year. I love this rifle and have taken Mule Deer, Antelope, Coyotes and now a Whitetail with it. It shoots 117 grain Sierra's at 2825 fps into tiny little groups if I'm "on". It is a 96 Husqvarna with a 3 position Gentry safety, cock on open, Timney trigger, Pac Nor super match 23" ultra light contour barrel, Leupold compact 3-9, Warne rings and my own version of a re-worked and re-shaped stock.

My Elk rifle this year is my .338 Win Mag Win M70 Supergrade. This rifle shoots excellent groups with 225 grain Sierra bullets going 2815 fps. I have only killed Coyotes with this one so it is due to take a game animal. I recently had the BOSS cut off this rifle and I'm pretty happy about hunting with it this year. I replaced the 50mm scope pictured with another Leupold 3-9 but with a 40mm objective this time.

I'm using a Browning A-Bolt II Composite Hunter w/BOSS in 7mm Rem Mag with a Leupold 3.5-10x40 shooting 175gr NP handloads for western Nebraska deer and elk. It's butt ugly, but it shoots consistantly and makes meat year after year. 'Purty is is what purty does...'

I think I'll take a different gun each day I hunt. I will choose from my 257 AI, 7-08 IMP, 7.62x39, and 35 Whelen IMP. I can get one white tail buck, and up to four does, so if I get more than one a day it will cut down how many rifles I'll take hunting this year.

I used a Winchester M 70 LRH chambered in 7mm STW. I was also fortunate enough to bloody my Schmidt Rubin K31 on a nice doe just last week. On paper and on game that old Swiss rifle is becoming one of my favorites.

As some of you know, I got hit in Iraq this year and had near-death injuries. For that reason, I am using my .25-06 to lessen recoil. The rifle is a left-hand Remington 700 with a Sako extractor, trigger reworked by myself and very crisp at 2-3/4 lbs, and the action has been blueprinted. Barrel is a Douglas, 24", that was installed back in 1979 (accurate still). The stock is one of Chet Brown's fiberglass models. Bullets loaded are Nosler 120gr partitions which group five shots just under an inch. Only will be hunting deer and antelope this year. No way am I able to pack out an elk...and I have a grandson who is able to hunt with me on weekends, but not able to take a week off from school. Wink

Maybe my 1903 in 30-06, with either 180 round nose or 150 pointy Hornady's.

Maybe my VZ-24 in 35 Whelen with 200 g hornady's, it now has a 2-7 Weaver shotgun scope.

Maybe a Savage 338 Win Mag.

After opening day, I have a 44 Mag NEF, another 1903/30-06, a Savage 458 Win Mag, a 308 Savage 99, and a 260 Rem 700 Mountain Rifle, all ready to go. Also have a Ruger redhawk 44 Mag and my bow. I can't chose a gun, but I love talking about them! Good luck and a safe return home, folks.
