boom stickhawk 180 gr. 270 bullets...experience? opinions...
can someone come up with the s.d. on this thing? what is the square of .277? hmmmm anyway, this sounds like a sledge hammer on deer and makes me think cape buffs are not safe...just joking damit! man mention cape buffs around here and you are in hunting season. anyway...i know hawk is held in the best regard here and wanted to use this web site for what it is intended. does anyone have any experience with this? i know y'all have an opinion, so let-er-rip. just remember you can't hunt in heaven and you certainly can't hunt in hell so get it all out of your system now. this 180 grain hawk makes me want to get a 270 mag

boom sticko.k. figured it out..the s.d.on the 270 is .335 the 270 will push it out at about 2,700 and change, thats good enough for me. and hawks 250 gr 308 s.d. is 376!

now that needs a magnum

boom stickfor the 180s in the 270...what twist rate would be the best? would it work o.k. in a 1 in ten?

asdfAssuming a bullet length of 1.3" for that 180 gn, a twist of 1:10" should work for a 2700 fps starting speed. (I ran the numbers through a modified Greenhill equation.)

fredj338boom, I don't think you will even get close to 2700fps out ofa 22" bbl. in a std. .270. The Hawk jacket is pure copper & soft, maybe 2600fps. Even @ that speed, the bullet will almost flatten. The Hawk bullets really come into their own when impact vel. is low, they are very soft. I have tried them in my .404 (.050 jacket) & even @ 2200fps MV, they turn almost inside out & are shallow penetrators in 50yd wetpack tests. JMO, but I would just use the exc. 160grNP @ 2700fps.

boom sticko.k....so buying a thicker jacket won't work? do i have to go full custom bullets if i want 180 gr.?

Lou270I've gotten over 2700 fps in a .270 win using Barnes original 180 RN in a 22" barrel using book loads. Barnes lists a couple book loads 2750 fps or so in a 24" barrel. I'm not sure how the Barnes jacket compares to the Hawk, but believe they are both pure copper.

AtkinsonI have had so many Hawk bullet turn inside out that its a sore spot with me and I used the .065 or thereabout heavy jackets..Posted some on Ar quite some time ago...They failed me in Africa in the .338 and 375 and also on mule deer with a 7x75...I won't use them, Only guy I ever knew that liked them was William Tibbe, the most famous of all Trolls that Saeed kicked off this board, and he was probably lieing...
