One other thing about recoil while shooting Offhand I learned from a gent from Scotland while on a moose hunt in Finland. He criticised me for shooting "squared up" like a bird hunter with my elbows out and almost horizontal to allow for the "forward allowance" as he put it when I was shooting for score on the moving moose targets to get my license. We were shooting 30/06's and 220 gr ammo that kicked pretty good that was supplied by the host of the hunting party. The Scotsman rotated my left shoulder to where it almost touched the stock, turned my hips almost sideways, pulled my left elbow under the rifle for my right handed stance, and pushed my left foot further forward and gently bent my left knee, and raised my right heel off the ground. The difference in the felt recoil was amazing as I was allowing the rifle to roll me onto my back foot and now able to control the upward recoil easily without the rifle twisting my shoulders and smacking me in the cheek and allowing the poor eye relief'ed scope to come back and continue to bloody my eyebrow. He laughed and said I looked like a western gunfighter movie actor at first until he found out that most of my offhand shots were on flying game. I still use a form of that stance today even with lighter kicking guns since I am able to hold a better sight picture for longer periods...and I don't take long range shots on running game with a big bore gun.
