there is pretty and there is sexy(hot) two very different things...monica bucelli is hot (matrix #3) jessica is pretty i dont think dumb is hot and now for the lesser of importance...i'll go for the 270 for flatter shooting and the 30-30 for more meat

Paris Hilton is just plain ugly. I think Jessica is smarter than she lets on. Some people would say dumb and really hot is a good combo.

Agree with George S. Mine would be the 30-06 pre-64 Winchester Featherweight thats been in my safe for over 45 yrs!!! Still drives tacks.

Well, here's a budget choice - a second hand rifle bought from a member here. 8x57 JS Mauser with open sights and not drilled for a scope by choice. Shoots beautifully with those sights and though I could not hunt deer with it in Wisconsin (the nearest rifle for deer county from where I am is Shawano, a long way from where I am) I hope that I shall hunt with it later this year. Best of all, it cost me $ 400.

The action is a DuV 42 military action with a new barrel with two rear leaf sights and a post front with a copper/brass bead. The stock actually looks nice though the picture is bad because I took it on my webcam. My digital camera won't upload pictures onto my PC and I had to make do with these. I haven't saved any targets from when I shot it last year - I'll post some when I shoot it next. It shoots better than any rifle at it's price deserves to.

Me too. 6.5X55 has killed almost every non dangerous game on earth, so yeah, it will work on deer.

It appears that we have a preponderance of woods hunters here and they are used to shooting rather small deer.

One is definitely not over gunned when hunting deer with a 30-06, or a magnum between 25 and 30 caliber. Not when the trophy may well weigh between 250 to 300 lbs and the shot taken between 250 yds to 400 yds.

These are not unlikely parameters with much western deer hunting. Which cartridge would I choose for these conditions? It would not be my 260 Rem, I carry it when I wish to impose a greater challenge upon myself while hunting, much as some carry a handgun or archery tackle while hunting deer.

If I had a serious intent to harvest a game animal today, I would grab the #1 in 7mmSTW.

It could just as easily be the 264 Win mag or the 30-06. But today I feel slightly more confident that I could make that 400 yd vital shot with the Ruger.

I like um all ! narrow it down to one ! ow man that hurts ! I think i,d go model 70 featherweight 270 Pre 64 or Classic, I like um both. Leupold VX3 2.5 X 8. But the same rig in 06 25,06 280 7X57 260 or 6.5 swede, Id like darn near as well ...tj3006

This is one of those "spin the wheel, pick a cartridge" questions, since there are so many great rounds to choose.

My perfect deer rifle is a Model 70 custom job with a McMillan stock, a 24" Kreiger bbl., and 3.5-10x Leica scope. This is the same rig I use for 90% of my hunting, from here to Africa and back, and it's a 300 Win. Mag. I load 180 Noslers to about 3100 fps., and zero for 250 yds.

If I were to hunt only deer for the rest of my career and had to choose just one rifle, this would STILL be the rifle I'd choose. No it's not "too big" for deer -- not any deer anywhere.......

Those are my sentiments as well. Here where I live, the 30-06 isn't considered as being "over-gunned" at all. Our deer aren't monsters, but, a high country mature buck, that may be 200-225 yards away, with swirling winds, that could easily weigh 200 to 225 lbs. on the hoof, is the perfect game animal for the 270, 280, or the 30-06. Allens 300 would fit the bill just as well. The 7mm mags may be perfect for that kind of hunting.

I think it really doesn't matter. I have always loved the 243, but I do think it is a little light. Anything from 257 Roberts/25-06 on up will work. I hate to admit it, but with all the rifle I own (around 50), I have killed almost every big game animal I have hunted over the last 20 years with the same rifle. It's an old model Ruger 338 in a B&C stock with a Leupold 1.75x6. Weighs about 8 pounds and I have shot it so much that it feels like an extension of my arm. I don't even think about range, trajectory calcs are built into the old head computer. Doesn't matter if it is pronghorn, deer or elk, I load the 210 Noslers and go. Familiarity and practice are more important than any caliber or rifle choice when actually hunting. In a real hunting situation, I'll put a guy who carries and shoots an old rifle behind the truck seat every day against anyone with a once a year, specialised rig.

Art, the 338 Win. Mag. with 210 Noslers is one of the best and most impressive "deer" loads I've ever used.

Gosh - I'd pick a .270 Winchester, 7mm RM, .30-06, or .300 Winchester Magnum and top it with a good scope and be happy. As mentioned earlier, some people must be very sensitive to recoil if a .30-06 is a hard kicking round to them.
