Recently picked up a Husqvarna 1600 in 358 Norma. Sweet little rifle. I built a 358 N on a P-14 action about 30 years ago and it has been a great rifle. Used 250 gr bullets almost exclusively. It has been a great killer on moose a few elk and some good sized black bears. The only problem with the old rifle is my youngest son has laid claim to it! So with the new (to me) husqvarna I again have a 358 N to shoot. I have it grouping just fine with 250 gr Hornadys. However all I have left are deer tags and the 358 Norma with 250 gr bullets is just a little much even for a big buck. Any other 358 Norma owners out there that have used 225 gr bullets on lighter game? I'm thinking 225 gr Sierras, 225 Nosler Accubonds, or 225 TSX. Anyone out there have experience with these bullets and have some pet loads?? Thanks for any input.

Congrats on the Husky. I only bring the Howitzer out during elk season. I cant help you out on the lighter bullets. You could perhaps load some non-premium sierras down a little for deer. However if your going to push those 225 to near max in the Norma, I would stick to a good bullet.

I only have/use one load with the 250 Speer.

I had a Husqvarna 1652 in .358 Norma, and it was a great rifle; so great another guy wanted it badly enough to part me from it. I used the 225-grain TSX for everything in it and they under an inch and killed great without too much damage to meat. I used Reloader 15 powder, Norma cases, and Winchester WLRM primers.

Huskys are good rifles, Mausers in effect..and the 358 Norma is a real killer and IMO rates with the 375 H&H on the big mean stuff. Never have owned one but have seen it used a good deal and I was always impressed.

Well it seems that everyone agrees the 358 is quite a cartridge .Loudenboomer, I loaded up some 225 TSX's as you suggested with IMR 4350 just to get a handle on where max would be with these bullets in my rifle.(It has a short throat and will not handle loads the old P-14 358N will handle). The loads increased 1 gr at a time. The first 3 went into about 3/4 inch @ 100yds. So that has promise. Could I ask a favour of someone who has Quickload. I would like to try RL17 with the 225 Sierra and the 225 TSX bullets.Could someone run those combinations and run those bullets with IMR 4350 for comparison. Hope thats not asking too much. Thanks for all the replies.

Can I have the following information please:

Proposed OAL,
Barrel length
Measured case water capacity( Once fired case with a primer in filled to the very top of the case mouth, please trim the case to the CIP spec and let me know what length that actually is before you do so. water weight in grains please.)

Add me to this list.

It's main problem however is that it sits directly between two other great cartridges....the .338 Mag and the .375 H&H.... and both of these will do it all and are quite available in the USA and around the world....the .358 Norma is almost a handloading only proposition.

Magazine will allow 3.320inches max.Case holds 90 grs water. Barrel lengthe 26 in. Case length 2.510 in. As I stated above I have tried IMR 4350 with the 225 gr TSX and it is quite accurate but I have not chronographed any loads. I would like to know what Quickload suggests for IMR 4350 and RL17 with 225 TSX and 225 gr Sierra's. If there are any other powders that would be good with these combinations I would be interested in those as well. Thanks

Good luck. Husq no good for me...lefty!! Otherwise I really like them! I'm jealous!

Snowman I've been shooting Norma's for 30 yrs and have used most bullets and quite a few different powders along the way. That being said my powder of choice is IMR 4895 under 225 NP or 280 Swifts with the Swifts being the only cartridges loaded up here at the house. I honestly can't tell the difference in hitting power with any combination I've ever used in a 358 Norma. Here's my 358(Norma Jean) at Pumice Creek last spring on the Penisula.

You have the 225 Woodleigh, TSX or 225 Accubond that is good ones to try, Nosler comes with a 200 grain AB now in .35 cal, meant for the .358 Win, but for light load in the Mighty Norma it may be a very flat shooter deer round .

The difference is that my fat fingers hit the "2" key instead of the "1" key, and I did not proof read my post closely enough. Mine was a 1651 as well. What I liked about it was that it was light enough to carry all day and the recoil was very mangeable because of how well it balanced.

I have two Huskys made in 1930 and 135 respectively..They have barrel band swivels, barrel banded rear sights and they are both on Mauser 98 military actions, The 1930 rifle has a real sho nuff french walnut stock, schnalbe forend and its beautiful. The 1930 cheapened up and its has the bolt turned down for scope but neither is drilled and tapped for scope? It is butt ugly with the beech wood stock, and I had to glass it and repair the recoil splits but it shoot an inch everytime with most loads at 75 yards, I put cross bolts in it and use 9.3x62 case heads on the cross bolts and I'm going to refinish and dye the stock..It looks real nice and its a using gun. It has 14 notches in the stock and I have seen a lot of Huskys that are notched, it was Sweedish thing, fortunatly I can remove the easy enough when I refinish the stock..

Both are 9.3x62 caliber.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I've now tried 225 gr TSX, 225 Sierras and 225gr Accubonds. My rifle does not like the accubonds. The 225 gr TSX'x group under an inch with just about any load I tried with RL17 and IMR 4350.The 225 Sierra is also quite accurate. The TSX's and the Sierras group about 2- 2 1/2 inches above the 250 Hornadys @ 100yds.Max load in my rifle with RL17 still has lots of case capacity so I may try RL19 with the 225 TSX. I'm thinking the TSX may be my bullet of choice for everything as I have had excellent performance with the TSX in other calibres.
