Must be a near record-to have this many posts since Jan 16th.

I use a 7 mm Rem Mag and a .25-06, alternating years so neither gun gets "jealous" of the other. I shoot 150 gr Ballistic tips in the 7 mag and Hornady 120 gr HPs in the .25-06. In the last 2 years, out of 7 deer taken, I haven't had a deer take more than a step or two. Shots ranged from neck shots to shoulder shots, to double lung shots. And, my son shot a buck this year that weighed 169 lbs before field dressing that dropped in its tracks using the .25-06 with a shoulder shot. The last deer I had to track was a 170+ pound buck shot thru the heart at 100 yds with the .25-06, and the blood trail looked like the proverbial bucket of red paint, and was only about 20 yards long.

I know the BTs get lots of bad press, but I've never had one let me down in the 7 mag, and two other guys on the same place have had the same experience with the loads.

In addition to the deer, we kill 20 or so hogs per year, most of them in the off season using .22-250s, BTs, and brain shots. In 5 seasons, we've had one hog "escape" after being knocked down.

So, guess I'm trying to say that if you shoot 'em right they are dead, whether in their tracks or at the end of a trail. As far as blood trailing in the dark in bad cover, come to our lease and try the South Texas brush--everything sticks, stabs, grabs, and hides rattlesnakes, so I don't like to track at night or in the day either. But, that comes with the turf.

I have lost count of the deer I have taken with the 30-06,the 165 gr hornady's worked by far the best for anchoring them fast, took a few with a 375 H&H,worked well but truthfully the one that ran ran farther than the -06 loads.I took a muley and a whitetail this fall with 3"mag slugs and one went 150 yards, hit a bit too far back, and one went 20 yards.Just my experience but I didn't find the 375 to be better for deer, was better for moose and bear however!!!

Yes being color blind does make a difference. I used to hunt with a guy that was totally color blind. It did not matter how much blood was present if the deer did not fall within his sight or he could not find it simply by walking the path by which it last ran he had to have help to find his deer.

On the other hand since all was shades of grey to him he could really pick something out that did not belong because the pattern changed in a non-normal way.

Dustoffer,

I have hunted Tx, shot a deer once and it topped a small ridge out of sight after hit, I literally had to walk right up on it, as it fell belly down in rocks and cactus and it was hidden until I was within a few feet.

I was really confused knowing the deer was hit and went down but unable to understand why it was not within sight when I went over that little ridge. I guess deer have a 'natural camo' there as we have more 'greenery' here east of you.
