Hello Mike. I recently bought a hells canyon x-bolt, with the McMillan stock, in 300 win. Shooting factory loads (Nosler custom, 200 gr accubonds) it's easily a "skinny" 1/2" rifle at 100 yds, with most shots touching. I shot my best 800 yd group with it also....about 4.5" for 4 shots. The trigger adjustment only went down to 3.25 lbs, with the tension screw completely removed. I ordered a replacement spring from M-CARBO, and installed it just yesterday. That got it to a consistent 2.5 lbs. I like this rifle so much, it wears my only nightforce!!! I took it to northern Idaho for covering clearcuts, for whitetails. I ended up shooting my deer in the timber, at 22 yds with a 35 Whelen, and 42 yds with a 375 H&H. Go figure? Andy#3

I had one of the very early ones many years ago. That particular rifle gave sub moangroups with several brands of factory ammo even shot many of them to the same poi.

I've owned 3-4 of them and all were very accurate for factory rifles...an inch or under. I wouldn't hesitate to give an X-Blot another try if I needed a rifle. The only reason they are gone now is I went with the Blaser R8 or they would be my go to hunting rifle. A-Bolts and X-Bolts are solid guns...IMO

Ditto previous comments. I work as a gunsmith at a Browning dealer and service center. Shot several to sight them in and all were MOA or better. Excellent trigger for a production rifle. Good stiff stock too. All are epoxy bedded. Also hardly ever see them in for service unless it is to lighten the trigger pull. No mechanical failures that I can recall. The big thing with these rifles is the mounting of the front scope base. There are four screws per scope base. The front two screws on the front scope base need to be shortened by 2-3 threads so they don't bottom into the barrel threads before cinching the base down. If you do this it will strip the top two receiver threads. Newer Leupold mounting bases include these shorter screws, but older ones and those of other makers may not.

Most of mine are stainless. However, the bolts are not. I had one bolt rust severely. I have never had another gun do that, ever. I was quite shocked.

More of the same kind of experience here - I got one of the camo-stocked 'varmint' models in .308 with a 24" barrel. It's still nicely light enough to carry, the magazines work like a charm and make it very easy to carry extra ammo silently and the trigger is a peach. Barnes VorTec 150 gr factory ammo shoots so well (1/2" or so @ 100yds) I haven't even bothered to handload for it. This rifle and ammo, by the way, worked great for me in Namibia for game up to kudu.

At one time there were several complaints about the brass falling back into the magazine area when being ejected. You might want to do a computer search for that topic on Xbolts. The issue is related to loaded rounds and them not always flying out of the ejection port. It's actually not that rare of an issue with WSM type cartridges. I had the same issue with my 8.59 Galaxy. Mike: I have one in .308 Win; heavier bbl than most (the Stalker model). It is my standard 500 yard gong practice rifle. Shoots sub MOA at 500. The only issue with X Bolts I am aware of is that they are very difficult to rebarrel.
|
One of Us |
I had heard that about the A-bolts wasn't aware of that with the X-bolts... What is the supposed issue? Interesting, I did a quick search and found McGowen's site where they list the labor costs for re-barrelling by action type and X-bolts and A-bolts are in the same category as rem 600,660, 700, 788, 7, 721, 722, and Tikka T3s. Must not be that difficult then. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? I have an X-Bolt in 300 Win Mag. Mine is accurate as well, even with factory ammo. It really likes NP protected points. The only issue that I have had is with the DuraTouch coating on the stock. It deteriorated into a stick mess and I ended up having to replace the stock. Mechanically though, it is a great rifle with a smooth action and I like the 60 degree bolt. I owned stainless stalker x-bolts in 30-06 and 388 Win Mag. Both shot submoa with their preferred ammo. I prefer the A-bolts to the X-bolts due to their appearance but the X-bolts do shoot well. I'm not sure what the Herstal Group is thinking as they have changed the appearance of their rifles and shotguns to something akin to a Buck Rogers firearm having an intimate relationship with a toaster and the offspring they produced sit squarely in the Browning lineup.

The DuraTouch problem encompassed the entire Browning long gun product line. Browning is replacing those stocks at no cost as long as they have inventory. If you have an older model and there is no replacement available you can strip the coating off and have it re-dipped in camo.

Bobster, thanks! I may give them a call and see what they will do. I'm pretty happy with the Boyd's stock that I had bedded and installed. The rifle is still very accurate and the added weight of the stock and new scope has made it more "shootable". The added stock length and better recoil pad has made the rifle more pleasant, even off the bench. Start young, hunt hard, and enjoy God's bounty.
