I am just fixing to start loading for a .338 W M. Was planning on 250 gr Nosler Partitions (unless somebody talks me into something else). What are the favorite powders out there for this cal. with 250's?

These components were made for each other in the .338!

Mine seems to like the H4350 w/225 TSX at about the 68-70 gr level. Fed 215 primers.

Ya'll think the H4350 is too fast for the 338 Mag?

H4350, RL19 or IMR4831. All perform well dependign on bullet. I lean to IMR4831 for best accuracy in my 338 w/ heavier bullets & H4350 for 210-225gr.

Well...what is the best weight of bullet in the .338 WM for heavy game (elk, Lion, African Plains, and maybe grizzly).

In a 338Mag if you cannot do anything you need to do with either RL19 or IMR4350 it probably isn't worth doing.

As for the 250's? since there isn't anything in North America you can't kill with a 225gr bullet from a rifle in that chambering I don't see the point in 250's.

What is a good starting place then for R-19 and a 225 gr Barnes TSX?

Mine likes both RL 19 and H4350. Its favorite and mine is 70 grains of H4350 under a 210 grain TSX. There is so little difference between the 210 and the 225's I opt for a little more velocity and flatter trajectory. I was told by Ty at Barnes that the 210 only lacks a couple of inches of penetration compared to the 225's and I don't have any grizzleys to hunt where I am. Soooo, 210s it is. DW

My old .338 win seemed to like RL-19 with 225s and 250s. But It never shot real well with either to be honest. That was a model 70 clasic.
My new one, a Ruger hawkeye Likes RL-19 real well, but it loves VIT-N160 with 200 and 225 grain nosler acubonds.
Startelingly acurate with the 225.
I just got some 250 grain accubonds but probably will not shoot them for awhile, as a 200 or 225 grainer should be more than enough for elk.

IMR 4350 with 225 TSX has been lights out for me. In my rifle, it performed quite a bit better the RL-19. Of course, each rifle is different.

My 225TSX load is 75 grns. R-19. I started at 70 and worked up. The rifle is a Tikka T-3 Lite SS, I also had worked up to that in a Ruger 77 tange safety . Both rifles shot it well..

I finally settled on IMR 4350, and I don't bother to experiment with other powder anymore. Admitted, this is partially because I have lots of that powder, but also because it works so well. I think H4350 would be just as good, and maybe others too, but I get such good results with IMR 4350, that I think I would just be wasting powder to experiment further. 225 gr bullets are all that's needed in North America, IMO.

The good thing is that the 338 WM is rather versitle in its use and in the varity of good loads. Generally all powder in the burn rate of moderately slow to slow, and bullets from 200 to 275 gr will work well in the right combo.

There are actually too many choices for me to deal with. A happy hand loader could burn a lot of powder testing all the variables, just shooting one bullet weight. So I have just narrowed it down a bit by choosing 225 gr and IMR 4350 powder, which covers practically everything I want to use the 338 for.

To my thinking, if you can't efficiently take any game animal with a 225 gr A-frame or TSX, it's real simple - you need a bigger gun, or some time learning how to place the bullet in the right place. The 338 is a real game getter.

I prefer Reloader 22 for the 250gn (and heavier) bullets in 338 Win Mag. I get 2750fps in my rifle with a number of 250gn bullets, and around 0.7 MOA 3 shot groups. Woodleigh's 250gn PPSN and Noslers new 250gn Accubond are both very accurate and good quality bullets. AR2213SC (H4831SC) is also a powder that gives good accuracy but about 50 fps slower than Re22.

I use RL25 For my 338 RUM. RL25 Really Gives me good results. For the 225 accubond bullet it goes 3178 FPS. For the 200gr bullet it goes 3120FPS. I have no Idea why it goes slower. Mabe I need to use a different powder.

Mine likes
225gr Nosler Part.
71gr. IMR 4350 right @ 2800fps
Fed 215 primer

If I need bigger bullet, I will use my 358 Norma or my 375H+H, smaller I will go to my 300 WM. But IMO a 225 partition is all you need in NA, this is the load I used for the Brown Bear you see here.

I agree with cmfic1, you can't beat the 225gr partition for the price. The accubond really kick butt too though.

Hogdon H 1000 with Federal 215 primers and Nosler 250 grain partitions, 250 grain Lapua Scenar, Woodleiegh 250 grain PP ,Sierra 250 grain Matchking and Gameking will give 1/2 to 3/4 MOA accuracy in the 338 Lapua Magnum at 100 yds.I only use H 1000 in my 338 Lapua Magnum, and I have tried a lot of powders and it gives the lowest pressures in my 338 Lapua Magnum. The Lapua Scenar and the Woodleigh P-P are exceptionally accurate and will consistently give 1/2 MOA accuracy out to 400 yards +

I found a pic of the groups with my load for my 338. I buggered up when I wrote on the target, they are actually 225gr. not 210 like it says.
