http://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=198 Interesting new twist in technology. Super soft tipped, pointed bullet that increases BC to make a 30-30 a 200 yard gun! But will the common once a year hunter buy them? They all KNOW you can't shoot a pointed bullet in a tube fed lever gun! I'll never know for sure, I'm a dedicated bolt gun freak,('cept for the AR). if you run, you just die tired It's not that life is so short, it's that death is sooo long! Speak kindly to me, beloved master. Revel in my unconditional love, and give me every minute that you can spare, for my time with you is short. Your faithful dog

Not that I shoot lever actions with a tubular magazine that often (I have exactly one), but I find this a super neat idea! - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... It entices its bearer into primeval forests, into mountains and deserts untenanted by man. - Horace Kephart

According to their data, the .30-30 is a 300yd gun!! http://hornady.primediaoutdoors.com/HDstory1.html Price isn't too bad at $14 for the .30-30 and bit more for the .35 Rem. http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/leverevolution.asp

Personally, I think this is fantastic News! 300 yds may be stretching it for most folks, but I can see a guy who shoots a lot, and has a Burris Ballistic Plex scope, being able to coax 300 yds out of it.. but not every nimrod will be able to do that.... However for the lever action guys, this is just what the doctor ordered... this from Joe Round Nose Lover here! I am sure glad hornady is out playing with new products and designs.... Considering on how many 30.30s exists in the closets of the USA and Canada... that is a boat load of potential customers..... Look on the other side, It will do anything the current 30/30 offerings will do, so there is no step backwards here.... It can only get better.... Way to go hornady... I sure hope it is available as a reloading component! cheers seafire

They seem like "Gummy Bullets" to me. If they deform that easily how to they retain their form when they are subjected to 40k PSI pushing on them and the air resistance?

When will we see that bullet offered as a component???

Well, it'd sure be easy to BLUNT them in a magazine, tubular or otherwise! "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

If you want a 300 yard lever gun that will shoot pointed bullets buy a BLR. But I like lever guns for short range(under 200) or in the woods. If I want to shoot 300 yds I got bolt guns for that.

This is good news to me as i was already thinking about getting a good levergun in 30/30.I've owned marlin's 336 before and liked it but thinking of trying a winchester since they are lighter. Hornady's new bullets kinda seal the deal.Wonder how they will work on pigs also noticed the bullet weight @ 160 grains.Oh,any faults with the winchester I should know. Straight shootin to ya

I have an old Savage 99 in 30-30. The barrel had been shot out years ago and my Dad had it re-barreled. It shoots just about any bullet you care to load very well. I have used it with the 130 Hornady spire pts with very good success filling some whitetail doe tags. I'm not sure I would call it a 300 yd rifle but it sure does the job at 200. Dam shame Savage quit making the the 99.

No, after over 100 years there mostly sorted out. If you can look over the various models before you buy would be best. Don't worry about apparent "looseness" in the action, though I believe they've tightened them up a bit nowdays. John L.

What's the point? | |||

I'll buy some - I don't like reloading 30-30. The point? A bit faster to start, and better aerodynamics mean a bit more retained velocity downrange. A little easier to hit with and a bit more power to be more than the "leg braker" it's always been, because of its excess drop. Jaywalker

Yes...exactly. Ya have to hand it to the Hornady company for it's creativity and courage in bring out innovative products..... This beats the hell out of the WSSMs and SAUMs that we've seen flop big time!!! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Ah, but you're talking about buying a new rifle in order to shoot spitzers. That's not a bad thing, I agree, but if you already have a Marlin or a Winchester gathering dust, the new bullets are a good way to gain an extra 50 yards or so, cheaply. Jaywalker
