It was a double tap to the head, very close quarters. I'm thinking 1911, .45 ACP

Seriously! Breach and enter, M4 platform. Since they over came 7.62 AK's, 5.56. Easy to handle and deadly accurate at close range. I would be happy w/ an arrow also.

I think Doc is on the right track but I would expect something more along the line of a suppressed version for naval use. Perhaps an MP5SD-N1, at least for the entry guys. Members of Support and Security elements would have different weapons based on their roles.

MP5SD-N1 in the center:

Another report say he took at least one round in the side of the head. Perhaps an operator flanked him to get behind the women, which included his now dead, youngest, and prettiest wife. In a few years we will get to listen to some shadowy, muffled voice on the history channel tell us how the capped the bastard.

I do remember a year or so ago being told that the NAVY was going to the old M-14 (.308 cal.) rifle and putting an AR type of stock on the gun. Something about the Navy was not wanting to wait anymore in getting a weapon that could do it all. They also planned on cutting the barrel back some.

If I get a guess...SOCOM.
Short-barrelled M14-7.62x51 Best for entry situations.
They said he was double-tapped, in the chest and in the head. Hmmm...lots of recoil, and maybe through the hostage?
There was about 40minutes of firefight before they got him.
No matter what anyone wants to say about filthy little men that wear dirty sheets, and wipe their butts with the same hand with which they eat sandwiches, they are still a dedicated soldier, and the SEALs had their hands full.
It's not over, just this inning.

SOF did a workup on making a m14 the same weight as a m16 - in the early 80s.. and made the same style CAR stock - cutting edge at the time. looked perfect then.. better now!

and maybe through the hostage ?

I doubt they would worry that much i that particular scenario but
they do have fragible bullets that will kill a human but break up
on contact with a wall - they certainly have them for 5.56 as they
are made here in Aus ad are mainly used for training in killing houses.

On the other hand, sometimes you need to shoot through walls etc to get
someone.

Recoil is not that heavy with all the gear hanging off the gun.

Well. now that we know a little more...The woman tried to protect him, but was shot in the leg. Hmmm, to get her out of the way?
We were told early-on that they took measures to not hurt the "non-combatants", which they were, until they proved otherwise.
I don't see why they would even be carrying non-penetrating bullets for THIS operation. All in the compound would be considered combatants until shown differently.
