Always liked the style. Just never saw any premo wood. Don't recall any coming out of the custom shops either. Got some to share? Thanks.

I have 2 Featherweights. The .270 couldn’t be any plainer. The 7mm has a bit of figure in the butt but not enough to get excited about. It’s my understanding that the fancy grained wood is heavier than plain grain. If that’s the case Winchester might put the lighter wood on their Fratherweights to keep the weight down. I really appreciate fancy grained wood, but for a hunting rifle that’s going to be knocked around a bit, the plain grain is just fine.

I have four in .270 WSM and two have beautiful wood, one plain and one is all weather stainless steel. All mine shoot lights out and have taken many Deer of both kinds and one Bull Elk. I am a Model 70 man and always will be although I own many others. Good Shooting.

dougfinn - sounds reasonable that straight grain could be lighter than more figured.

Not bad. richj. Saw a couple like that.

I just saw a fwt with nice wood. Too bad it was a one-sider.
The Olin (correct terminology?) M70's seem to have nicer/darker wood. Anyone care to comment on that?

I think I saw at one time they made a run of M70 Classic featherweights with nicer wood but can’t remember exactly when that was.

I have an M 70 featherweight classic when they started making them in the 1990’s. It has has better wood then what you see today and the finish doesn’t look so painted on. But American walnut by any of the few companies still selling wood stocked rifles isn’t in general that great anymore unless you order a fancier grade rifle.

The 1952 vintage featherweight I once owned had denser wood but was very plain grained like most M70’s back then. They just had access to better quality though not always fancier stuff in those days.

not exactly what you're asking about, but I have a short-action supergrade stock for a Classic action that is looking for a home. I can't remember how figured or fancy the grain is, but it has the black forend tip. Let me know if you would like me to send pics (would not be until Monday).

Have a very nice CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery. Kevin Weaver's putting on an ebony forend and grip cap as we speak, darkening the wood a bit too at my request. I'll post after pics when it's done

This is a SC FWT. Not premium wood but taking off the factory stain helped.

Yes I originally bought it as a 375 H&H at Sportsman's Warehouse for $900 and had a 10% off coupon. I had them add the barrel band which meant it had to come from the CZ Custom Shop. I asked Jason to pick me a nice stock and he sure did Smiler Harlan Satrang rebarrled/rechamberd it to 500 Jeffery for me for $500. Those were the days Smiler

Nice choice. Got a nice surprise after making the same request with Dakota on a Model 10 order. Sold it because it felt barrel heavy. Should have kept it because of the nice wood.

I have an early Classic that I purchased from Thad Scott, probably out of Shotgun News??? He told me it was a limited run. It has a stainless barreled action and the wood is definitely above average. There is a lot of flame figure when you turn it just right out in the sun. I really like the balance and feel of the featherweights, even though they really aren't all that light. Stock shape is very nice on them. On mine, the butt has been hollowed out under the pad, not sure if that is done on all of them. This one is in good old 30-06 and has accounted for 2 leopards and various plains game. Will post some pics in a bit. Came across this one on GB that has decent wood but they are scarce...

My daughter has a .257 Roberts Featherweight I bought for her when she first started hunting with very nice wood from the custom shop in the late 1990s.

Finally figured out posting pics. The right side is not as good as the left to be sure but it has nice "flame" figure as the light hits it in different angles. This is on both sides.

Not sure why it is posting the pics twice....

Great pictures. Definitely one of the nicest stocks out there. I had seen another one in SS that had better figure, just not quite that nice.

I have a Classic FWT in 6.5x55 that has better than average wood. Closer to premium than fence post, but not exhibition grade.
