What is everyone going to be packing for elk this fall? I have decided on the CZ Lux in 9.3x62 with the 270 grain Lapua Naturalis, and my good old faithful P.O. Ackley 7x57 with either 160 grain Partitions or a traditional 175 grain roundnose (I have always wanted to take an elk with the load that this calibers reputation was originally made with). I hunt elk in the black timber where it is up close and personal and can hardly wait for opening day.

I hope to have my .358 Bellm (14" rechamber of .35 Rem. Contender barrel) back from Mike B. in time for elk season, but if I don't, I'll be toting my trusty Win. M70 SS .300 Wby. w/180 gr. X bullets, or a Marlin 444 XLR and Hornady 265 gr., assuming I can buy one by then. .300 Wby did a great job on last year's elk. 338 win mag Beretta Mato with Zeiss 2.5x10x50 VM/V shooting a 225 gr TSX @ 2815 fps. Last year I used my 300 win mag Mato with 180 gr TSX and shot a 5x5. ____________________________________ There are those who would misteach us that to stick in a rut is consistency - and a virtue, and that to climb out of the rut is inconsistency - and a vice. - Mark Twain | Chinese Proverb: When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others. ___________________________________

Will either take a CZ 550 American in 9,3x62 with a 2.5-8x Leupold using 286 gr Nosler Partitions, or a pre-64 M70 in .338 Win Mag fitted with a Krieger bbl, NECG iron sights, 3-9x42 Zeiss Conquest scope on a pillar bedded McMillan stock using 225 gr Barnes Xs. Salt in the wound, first year in a quite a few that I won't be making it Elk hunting. But if I was, it would be with 338-06, 210gr TSX's loaded to around 2800fps.

I will use my go-to elk rifle a Sako TRG-S 338 Lapua with Barnes TSXs, either the 210s used last year or maybe try 225s just for S&Gs. Like last year I drew a cow elk tag so it will be a combo cow and mulie buck hunt. I would like to get a big bull someday but I just love elk meat and hunting cow elk and mulies at the same time adds a little extra enjoyment for me. I haven't made up my mind completly yet. Certainly my marlin 45/70 with VX2 1X4 shooting hornady 350 grain flat points will go. I just love that thing. And the other rifle will be my pre 64 featherweight 30,06 With VX3 2.5X8 shooting a 168 grain T-shock barnes. My custom mauser 35 whelen, 2X7 VX2 and a 250 grain speer, or mabye my .338 win model 70 classic with a 225 grain Hornady, No scope on her a the moment. I have faith in all those pee shooters but will the elk come out and play this year ? Only saw one hangin last year...tj3006 freedom1st

Ruger M77 tang safety in 9.3x62 with 286gr Partitions. I hunt black timber and, well that should about do it I think. I'm still on the fence about which scope to put on it. I've got a 3x9 on it now for load workups and practice but I might put a 1x4 on it since that's what I've used before with good success.

I've got two elk tags this year. My go to rifle is a 20" stainless M-70 in Mac Millian stock in 375H&h shooting 270Gr TSX @ about 2700. My other two choices are a Dakota M-97 light weight hunter in .300WM. And I've got a new little gem of a M-8400 with gorgeous peice of wood on it in .30-06. Both of them are shooting 180Gr TSX. I figure I'm enough of a geek to kill my bull with one and my cow with one of the two others. Isn't it great to have choices?!?

I am gonna be taking 3 rigs to elk camp this year. My 700 7 Mashburn Super for the open ridges, set up with a 4-14 Leo and Premier dotz to 700. I will be using the 150 TSX in this one. Also my M70/ 375 Wby with a 2-8 Leo on it with 270 TSX's. And lastly a rifle I call "Fat Bastid", it is a M70/338 WSM with 210 TSX's in it and a 3-9 Burris with BP on it. Only 67 dayz to go....gotta spend more time at the gym....grins Mark D

I'm taking my .338-06 with VXIII 2.5-8 loaded with 200 grain Hornady SP. Backup will be .35 Whelen with VXIII 1.75-6 225 grain Nosler Partitions. I'm also contemplating taking my Marlin 336 in .35 Rem with 200 grain Sierra RN instead of the .35 Whelen. I have two elk and one black bear tag to fill in one season so I'll be busy.

The next time I go for elk, I'll be carrying my .73 cal. Jaeger with a 597.5 grain patched ball and 175 grains of Swiss FFG. My son, the archer, called my last bull in to about 30 yards. It was damned unsporting of me to shoot it with a 7mm Rem. Mag. and a 175-grain Nosler Partition at 3050 FPS MV. But we were all looking forward to an elk roast........ .338 Win. Mag. and 225 grain NFs. Edited: Or, maybe, 225 grain TBBCs. I just realized I had a few boxes of Federal Premium High Energy loads left. These give me nearly 3,000 fps and are very accurate in my rifle. BTW, the rifle is a Blaser R93 Synthetic, with a Schmidt & Bender 2.5-10x56mm Zenith scope on top. My Elk rig this year is an old faithful. A Winchester Model 70 in .358 STA shooting either 250 grain or 270 grain North Forks. Backup will be another .358 STA with same bullets, backup to backup will be a .338 Lapua with 225 grain North Forks. Good shooting. phurley

I pack a 338 Win Mag in a Model 70 but have a backup that I call my canyon shooter which is a Remington 700 Sendero in 300 Ultra Mag. I shoot the 225 gr. Northfork in the 338 and the Swift 180 gr. Scirroco in the Ultra Mag. More than likely the Ultra Mag won't get out of the truck. The only easy day is yesterday!

My back up will be my Weatherby Vangard in 300 Wby shooting 168gr TSX loads. If I connect....It will be my first Elk Lance Lance Larson Studio lancelarsonstudio.com

I've got two great guns to go to this year. A Remington Model 673 in 350 Mag shooting a 200gr TSX or a Steyr Pro-Hunter in 376 Steyr shooting a 235gr TSX. I put 1.5 x 5 Leupolds with the heavy duplex on both of them. Helps me find them quicker in low light. As a side note it's interesting how many on this forum have now gone to the Barnes TSX as their go-to bullet. I feel like I'm in good company.

Though I didn't get drawn in the public draw, I did manage to round up a landowner permit, so I'll venture forth for cows using my T/C Encore muzzleloader shooting 260 grain Dead Centers over 130 grains of 777. _____________________ A successful man is one who earns more money than his wife can spend.

Another vote here for the 338-06. Mine's a Weatherby UL with a 3x9 Zeiss. Shoots REAL well with 210 Partitions at about 2850 FPS. Africa this year, but want the elk next. Good luck. Gary

I'll be taking a trio of 'em this year too, a new to me pre Garcia Sako in .338 Win mag stoked with 250 grain partitions, my trusty old FN mauser in .30-06 fed a strict diet of 180 grain partitions, and for short range work, my old M71 and 250 grain Barnes originals.

El Deguello, what kind of velocity do you get out of the charge with a round ball gun. The reason I ask is I'm a few months from receiving my 16 bore (66 cal) round ball gun from Don Brown.

I know so many people that can't shoot some of those calibers in a rifle and you boys are out shooting them in Contenders.. Definitely separates the men from the boys... good luck on your elk hunt and hope you get that barrel back in time from Mike...He is a great guy, and busy as hell.... cheers seafire

Guess while it is on topic.... Plain Jane Model 70, with a Laminate Boyd stock, chambered in 338/06, with loads for a 200 grain Hornady SP at about 2850 fps and a 250 grain Hornady RN at 2650 to 2700 fps.... Scope is a plain old Leupold 2 x 7 shot gun scope..... The other rifle will be a Model 70 Featherweight chambered in 7 x 57, with a 160 grain Speer Mag tip with an MV of 2650, with a Leupold 3 x 9 with a Heavy German Number ONE reticle.... Guess I am kinda bourgeois in my hunting gear, compared to my forum brethern, ya think????

Unreal number of different calibers here. I count 30, with the most popular bullet diameter being .338" (16), followed by .308" (10), .358" (6), .366"-9.3mm (5) and .284"-7mm (5) (tied). Most popular specific calibers: .338 Win. Mag. - 6 .338-06 - 6 9.3x62mm - 5 .30-06 - 5 Observations: Only one "magnum" in the top four. .338 caliber cartridges rule. 30 different calibers total means we cannot be a typical group! .284"-7mm and .277" are the smallest calibers listed. The .35 is thriving, at least among us! Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

IF I'm shooting bulls; 338-06 with 225 NP's or possibly I'll finally bloody my M70 .300 H&H. It's almost fifty years old and deserves it's first hunt. If it's a cow for the freezer I'll use the Freedom Arms M83. 335 gr LBT's at 1200 fps in Casull cases. Decisons! Decisions! FN in MT 'I'm tryin' to think, but nothin' happens"! Rifles, rifles, rifles, huh! I will probably use a new 12 inch Reeder Encore barrel in .500S&W. If I don't want to pack heavy, I'll take another with the .41Magnum and 250gr.WFNGC bullets at around 1300fps. I basically bowhunt with handguns (rangewise) since I tore up a shoulder and can't draw a bow for awhile. A rifle is just too damn easy!
