This is horrible. I have a scope in my safe (Zeiss Victory 2.5-10x42) that needs a home. I find it purely unacceptable that such a fine scope sit there unused!

I currently have the following:

1. .257 Roberts (Remmie Mannlicher, 2.5-8x36)
2. 7x57 Mauser (Ruger #1, Minox 2-10)
3. .35 Rem. (Marlin 336, Ziess 1.8-5.5)
4. .375 H&H (Montana 1999, Burris Euro-D 1-4)

Now, I happen to like "pretty" rifles. I'm big on Wood on rifles - not so much for synthetics.

I'm hung up on two options right now: either a .270 Winchester (because there is such a huge gap between the .257 and Mauser) or something like a .300 WinMag or 7mm RemMag. I don't really have anything out there that will "reach out and touch" something...not that I'm such a great shot that I should be doing much over 300 yards anyway.

Throw me some ideas here people! Help me think a bit!

Regards,

Robert

A 30 or 33 cal magnum would be my choice I think. Win mag or Weatherby Mag, your choice!

Or better yet, since you already have some great classics, a 300 H&H? actually yes, that's my suggestion! A lovely 300 H&H with good wood and fine blueing, 26" barrel. You can push it pretty hard with handloads, and its about the perfect in between step.

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

It's tough besting the suggestions above.
Other options: I have a 7mm Rem mag that has a Swaro 4-12x scope on it that just happens to be very accurate, with the load it likes best. That would make a good addition with the excellent scope you have seeking a new rifle.
I like the 300WSM better than the 300 Win Mag as the 300 Win mag kicks too much for me, and the 300WSM is about right. It's in between the great 30-06 and the 300 Win Mag in preformance.
I also like the 338-06 very much, and it would make a perfect Elk rifle.
Just some thoughts for your consideration.
But, I see that you have no rifles smaller in caliber than your 257 Roberts. If you want to do any prairie dog hunting, a smaller caliber would be good.

Have fun considering what one you want most.

Don

257 and 7x57 are very close IMO, I would not add a 270 in that lineup. the 30-06 is very versatile, but if you're wanting something with more juice at distance you are looking at the mags. a 300h&h would be real classy. I'd do a weatherby or norma if doing the 30 mag and not wanting the h&h. (by the way, I think a 25" barrel on a 300 with a slender british style stock would look sweeeeeet).

You already have a 35, you could do a 35 magnum and be different than everybody else around you. 358 norma, 35xsome magnum.

There's a pretty 9.3x62 for sale somewhere on here right now, looks beaute, you could have the stock copied to a nicer piece of wood and be ready to hunt, if need more juice blow it out, isn't 9.3x68 a standard size too? (sorry guys, don't know my metric cartridges).

or go bigger and do a 416. go smaller and do a 224 clark.

"(by the way, I think a 25" barrel on a 300 with a slender british style stock would look sweeeeeet). " - oooh, that's an idea!

PS: Already had a .350 RemMag - great cartridge that I let go in favor of .375 H&H.

Well, you have a .284, and a .375.
Split the difference and you are looking at something in the 8mm to .338 range.

.325 WSM
.338 Win Mag.
Or if you want to reach out more:
8mm Rem mag.
300 Rum.

I believe any of these could help shrink your hole.

Gidday Robert,

After you have the new safe Seafire suggests a Sako L691 in 30-06 or 300 Win Mag with 30-06 being my preference.

A classic rifle for someone who hunts

Right now I'm really leaning towards a 30-06, but there's a nice 300 winmag out there that might call to me.

The funny thing is, a 300 obsoletes the need for the 7mm...except a 7mm Mauser and a Ruger #1 is about as classic as it gets for me.

It's all food for thought these days. Good thing I like food!

As I give this more thought, I realize that I want a hunting rifle as opposed to a BR gun. And as much as I like a No. 1, the Ruger's are just a bit long in the stock for all 5'8" of me. I'd like to keep the rifle weight right at 8# with scope. Something light enough to carry, but heavy enough to range test effectively.

I'm not a BR kinda guy. I want MOA accuracy, but that's a mechanical function caused by the reality of a mind that second-guesses itself. I need MOA to eliminate the thought of "shooter error" - or more to the point: I don't want to blame the rifle for my own inadequacies. MOA work...

Regards,

Robert

Just a suggestion, but since you already have all the bases covered for about anything you may hunt, and since you also mentioned you like pretty wood; how bout picking a caliber that you would use as your 'go to' gun for most of what you do spend time hunting, or shooting at. Maybe a good .300 mag or what ever; does not matter as long as it's in a caliber you would use most of the time. can even be of a caliber you already have. Then have a nice custom rifle built in that caliber, with the action of your choice, and wood of your choice. Make it a real custom rifle.
I did just that with a Sako action, Kreiger barrel, English walnut stock, Leuplod 1.5-5 scope, chambered for a .338-06 AI. It will be my 'go to' rifle for most of what I hunt. It will cover everything from squirrels to big bear.

In reality, it makes no difference at all what anyone else would build. What do YOU want?

Good luck, and let us know what you went with.

A 300 of any choice is going to compliment your battery well. I still think the H&H is a good choice to go along with your 375 H&H. May as well have the grandad of all magnums AND the great uncle of fast 30's in one safe Big Grin

But, a Win Mag isn't a bad choice either. Maybe one of the new South Carolina Win 70 Supergrades?

Depending on how well you handle recoil, I would select the 300 ultra mag. With this one you can utilize all of that magnification. I sighted mine with 200gr accubonds 2 inches high at 100 and hit just under the x at 300. Now that is flat shooting. If you are sensitive, then the 9.3x62 is an easy to shoot and very accurate cartridge. I personaly enjoy accurate rifles more than the rest.

I love my .300winmag, but if you don't intend to shoot over 300yrds, then a 30-06 or .338-06 would be the way to go.

The lighter barnes tsx bullets take up the gap in trajectory between 30-06 and .338-06, and you still have the heavier top end for hunting big game out to 300yrds.

If you want to go unique, 8mm remmag. Splits the 300's and .338's.

A Kimber of Oregon 89 Super America in 7MM Mag. If you find one with dovetails just make sure you can locate some rings that will accept your 30 MM scope.
I own one with a Leupold and really like the rifle. Shoots very nice and beautiful rifle to boot. If interested look around on Guns International.

I see many gaps you could fill. How about a 22 centerfire? I also will vote for the 30-06 or .270 or 300 mag. I just added a 30-06 to fit the small gap I have between .308 and .300 Win Mag.

You need a 270!!!!!

Second choices are all equal and I recommend any of these:

6.5x284
30.06
280 or 280AI
7WSM
270WSM
300WSM
7RemMag

but I stand by my first recommendation!

Yeah, definitely looks like a 300 is the right way to go. It's a horible thing. The really horible thing is that while I love the Ruger #1 platform, the stock is just under 3/4" too long for me. I really end up crawling the stock to get the Zeiss Victory to fit. And I really, really don't want to cut the stock...

I have found that the Minox 2-10 is GREAT on a Ruger #1 - the scope has a really long eyepiece and fits rearward nearly 3/4" beyond what the Victory does. But then the optics definitely aren't as good as the Victory...

Robert

There is only one logical choice to fit with the group you already have.

.300 H&H

Get a nice old Model 70 or a custom on a M 70 action. Don't fool with a R #1.
