tu2 Was shooting my 7x41 and it really did fine out to 300 yards. But that's not the story.
oldA young man ,perhaps near 30, set up on the bench next to me. He was having trouple getting his bolt into his new, unfired Savage .270 . He asked for help and I oblidged. It was the new Savage design and I had a little difficulty finding the new position of the bolt release.Once found no prblem.
diggin The fella thanked me and than asked me if I'd help him sight it in. He let me know that this was his first rifle and he had never fired it and had little experience at shooting at all. We spent about 15 min. sighting it in.
He than took the rifle and using Federal 130 gr. partion bullets printed a five soot 1" group at 100 yards. shocker

I told him to see what it would do at longer yardage. At 200 he nailed the metal pig just right with 4 or 5 shots, Same thing at 300 yards. No stoping him now. At 400 yards he was hiting a 6" dangeling plate every time.

flame New Savage rifle, factory loads,Untrained shooter. Oh! He was going to Alaska two days later to hunt Black tail.

tu2There's a lot to be said about those Savage barrels, beer roger

Sickening how accurate they are! I have two model 11's one in 223, the other 22-250. Bought both NIB with the Nikon scope package and don't have $800 in them both. They will shoot way better than I am capable of and I have shot dime sized groups with them!

30+ years experience tells me that perfection hit at .264. Others are adequate but anything before or after is wishful thinking.

Yeah. I have two Savages. Well, really, a Stevens 200 and an LRP.

I did put a Rifle Basix trigger and a Boyds stock on the Stevens, but it shot sub MOA (5 shots) before that.

The LRP is pure out-of-the-box, and I can't seem to find a load that it doesn't like.

As adamhunter said, "They will shoot way better than I am capable of . . ."

I'd also add that your untrained shooter friend is far more capable than I was at his stage of my shooting career.

And may well be better than I am today.

On the other hand, he WAS shooting a .270! I'll bet that's the answer! jumping

shockerI forgot to mention that the rifle had an unajusted accutrigger that had a pull worse than a Military Mauser. beer roger

Last Monday I shot my Lapua at 800 and 1290 yards, one shot at each range.

First shot at 800 I called the wind 1 MOA to the right but as soon as I shot I noticed the wind had suddenly shifted and thought I was going to hit way right. Hit was about 2 inches low and 4 inches to the right.

Second shot at 1290 was at a different angle, but the mirage was clearly drifting to the left. Held 2 MOA after coming up for my 1290 yard zero. I hit about 3 inches low and about 1 inch to the right.

The last time I shot it at 500 yards it shot a 3 shot group that was 1.5 inches. It wasn't the first group that size at that range.

Savage is the most out of box rifle out there IMO. It shoots as well as my Stiller/Lilja Edge, which cost me a lot more money. Currently getting a Stiller built with a Barlein bbl and McM stock. If it shoots as well as the Savage I will be thrilled.

Was his name Tom?

Good thing he didn't have a fence to paint but had little to no experience.

Every time I shoot out a barrel on a savage, I think about selling them and buying some "higher end" guns but then I wake up, spin a new barrel on them and continue shooting tiny little groups. Stock Savage or aftermarket barrels, it doesn't matter, they all shoot.

Sounds like the young man was lucky enough to have help where he needed it and none where he did not.

I own 3 Savage bolt actions. 2 are stock rifles, one is a 260 Rem one is 7.62x39 and the third has a custom 25/284 barrel on it. They all shoot well but the 260 is almost embarrassing. Ragged one hole groups at 100 yds and 5/8 to 3/4 in groups @ 200yds from a sporter weight ????? They are doing something right over at Savage.

I had a similar experience when I helped my son's friend set up his AXIS-2 in 7mm-08.

Prior to that, he had only fired my Dad's 30/40 Krag a few times at milk jugs on the hill in front of my house. His 1st group W/the 7mm-08 was just over 1" @ 100 yds.

After some load development I had it shooting 1/2" groups.

Come to think of it, I've seen it to. My shooting buddy brought his niece to the range one day, and in the course of introducing her to CF rifles (a .223, I believe) she put her first to shots at about 1:00 about 4 inches from her aiming point, but within an inch of one another. We were impressed.

Her third shot went dead center through her aim point.

"Awwww . . ." say we . . . "That's too bad. you really had a good thing going."

"What do you mean?" she replied. "I held low and to the left and hit the aim point."

A natural . . . I hate people like that! Big Grin
