The only bad thing about Sako's is trying to buy parts for them (i.e. scope rings and bases).

Remington M-700V. The barrel looked like a washboard inside. Obviously the drill or reamer had a chip out of it. They ran the button over the defective hole. The rifled bore then had an undulating surface. I tried lapping it. Could not remove enough material with 120 grit clover to make a smooth hole. I never bothered messing with Remington. Just bought a Pac-Nor barrel. It shoots in the teens now. I put a decent looking stock on it too. In hindsite I could have bought an action and saved a lot of monkey business.

After reading all this, it is obvious that any maker can turn out an unsatisfactory rifle!

As for my worst, it is a tossup between a Browning Grade IV BAR in .308 Win., or a Ruger Mini-30! The Browing was beautiful, but that's all! It consistently placed the first two shots almost touching, then the next three about 4" below the first two. Load nor bullet weight ever changed this performance.

The Mini-30 would shoot a good group today, tomorrow, or any other day. The problem was that from day to day, there was about a 6-inch differenbce in the position of the center of the group on the target, when the sights (a 2.5X Leupold scope) had never been touched.....

Oh yes! I once had a Remington 740 in .30/'06. It was typical of that particular model - very poor! But I got about what I'd expected from it. Alas! The BAR was expensive, and certainly did not uphold Browning's reputation!! I guess it was the worst, in terms of cost and expectations!!

Nah. Anybody "can", but that's not the poiint.

The point is that most European firearms manufacturers have a department called "quality control", and most US manufacturers do not have it anymore (except maybe Freedom Arms).

That is the reason why US products generally have acquired such a shoddy reputation abroad - sometimes undeservedly, as to the individual gun.

I had a Noble pump action 22 about 25 years ago with a wobbly barrel and a buttplate installed with nails. Mot a good gun, but I managed to dump it at a pawn shop in Manhattan, KS, and I've never looked back!

I recently bought a 12 over 6.5x55 EAA combination gun that was made in Russia and is, I think, the same as the current Remington imports. A real POS without any good points that I can think of. I bought it for $300 from CDNN and was happy to sell it for $150.

They have QC departments, the real difference is how high, or in this case, how low the standards are set. They must be getting lessons from Zastava in this regard!

Also, since in most of Europe, hunting is more for the privileged, they expect to pay more for a firearm and don't balk at the idea.

Sadly, the rule here is more along the lines of quantity vs quality with most of the masses opting for quantity.

You are correct, the worst shooting rifle I've seen was an old Rhiimaki Sako in .222 Remington with a bull barrel. This was one of the old type with detachable clip and these were famous for shooting small groups. Mine would keyhole 2 out of three at 25 yards. Other than it I have never owned anything that wouldn't group into 1.5 in. although I have shot some Rem. semiautos that weren't so good either.

This happened several years ago anyhow My buddy bought a custom 98 mauser in a 25-06. It was nothing fancy, He put a scope on it and started to try to sight it in well he couldn't get it to shoot. It would shoot 3 to 4 in groups it patterned like a shotgun. On top of that the gunsmith that built it for some reason thought the rails had to be opend up? Don't ask why so the rounds would pop out of the magazine. He was hurting for money so I bought it from him, he also didn't reload I figured hell i could get it to shoot since I reloaded. Well off I go I put a Burris scope on it had my buddy glass bed it foe me, I tried everything 5 to 6 different powders. I bought every wieght and make of bullets and I stillcouldn't get that damn thing to shoot. I took a target to my dad work place to show him and one of the guys commented what the hell you shoting a shotgun. That is when I new there was no hope for it. So sent to Kurt Mueller in Forest Grove,Or to be rechambered to 25-284 and to recrown the barrel. Well I get it back and I found some and to this day Hornady said they only made limited run of these bullets which were 100gr Boattail spire points.I bought the only two boxes this gunshop had I loaded some of these with IMR 4350 that thing would shoot. Well not relizing hornady quit making these bullets I commenced to shooting them all up. went to buy more couldn't get them anymore I tried other bullets it would not shoot. So bought a Montana Rifleman stainless steel barrel and it will shoot just about anything I feed it. So this was my headache rifle for a long time.

RUGER Mini 30. I couldn't get it to shoot minute of bus at 100 yards; I had two Mini 14s that were almost as bad. When it came time to buy rifles for my patrol officers, I bought Colt AR-15s. I am the only agency in the county that does not use Mini 14s. Actually, the CHP also dumped their Mini 14s and went to Colt.

Piece of shit guns which I have experienced:

Browing A-Bolt whose barrel was worn out in 250 shots (serious erosion even though not ever used in rapid fire mode).

Browning BAR that was a long, unweildy and shiny monstrosity.

Butler Creek banana clips for a Ruger 10/22 that always jammed.

Cooper that would not eject right out of the box new from the factory (they fixed it but I paid shipping). They tried to blame it on the ammo. B.S.

S&W M34 Kit Gun .22 LR that would hit the firing pin in between cartridges when fired double action.

Rem 700 that went BANG when the bolt was closed.

Rem 742 - the action came apart while shooting. Rem replaced the receiver and it only shoots a 3" group.

Ruger Mini 14 that would never shoot better than 4" at 100 yards.

Savage 99 takedown that shot a 3 foot group at 50 yards.

Win M100 in .284 that fired in burst mode.

Winchester pump shotgun that hit 1 foot low and 2 feet left at 30 yards.

AND

Every Redfield scope. They either will not hold zero or will not adjust. Or both.

I have had my share of gobblers also.

A Marlin 444 that shot 8-10 inches low at 50 yards with the rear sight maxed out. Sold it a gunshow and bought another that shot as good as any lever gun.

Browning BAR...300 Win Mag that couldn't keep three shots on a dinner plate at 100 yards.

Ruger Mini-14...need I say more? I moved on to AR-15s and never looked back.

A Remington Classic in 7mm Weatherby. Spent way too much time/money trying to get it to shoot consistantly with anything approaching accuracy. Different bullets, loads, stocks and bedding. Even recrowned the barrel and tried different dies. Finally took off the barrel and put the action into the doner box.

I don't even want to think about the handguns and shotguns that failed to measure up.

hard to say,
my 1938 tokarov rifle... thing shot 2" with irons and factory loads.. using pulled/primed brass, would make 1.5" with arons..

of course, it's 5 inches high!!!

scoped it with the cheap copy of the rail... nice.. 3 shots touching.. 4th GONE... rail slipped

bought new real rail.. same thing....

sold it off in parts, bought a polytech m14 that was a 2" gun out to 200.. weird gun... 2" at 100, 2" at 200....

i think the worst of the worst was a 9 largo pistol... piece here, piece there... just about everything, and it shot like a shotgun.. with a 4" barrel.. 10" at 20 yards... amazing...

most disappointing was the first 500 jeffe I built.. spent 2 MONTHS getting it to feed, finally go it... first shot off the bench broke the stock

jeffe

Idaho IHP has done the same, seems they couldn't afford to maintain the cheap guns the bean counters bought. Not sure if their using Colts though.
