I have worked up a load in my rifle using 220 grain hornady bullets. ( got few hundred really cheap at gun show ) I am getting 2450 fps out of my load. I know these bullets where made for the 8mm mag. My question is how well will these bullets perform out of my mauser? Good elk moose load to 100-200 yards? thanks guys Jason

Jason, As I recall, the Hornady manual used to say that these bullets would work in the 8x57 at the velocity of the fastest loads. I can't remember whether they made reference to range or not, but the way they worded it made it clear that this bullet is a bit tough for the 8x57 velocities. That said, I can't imagine that it wouldn't perform well at 100 yds or less. By perform - I mean expand. I'm thinking that beyond 100 yds, the velocity would probably not be enough to gain the full benefit of good expansion. I'm also sure it will shoot through just about any critter. I'm thinking the 220 gr Hornady would be a good choice for the 325 WSM, and something in 200 gr better for the Mauser. The 195 gr Hornady 8mm bullet seems just about right. cup and core bullets will work down to 1200-1500 fps ... by work, i mean expand ... unless its a dgx bullet, it just has a copper jacket and will perform nicely. I love hornady bullets, and give credit where its due.. and feedback .. part of my feedback has been their bullets are sometimes TOO soft... their later bullets have toughened up ... i would use them opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? For full throttle loads close up in the 8mm Rem or the 8x68 the Hornady bullet is a little soft. The 200 gr X bullets or the 200 gr partions are better. The 220 Hornady bullet in a 8mm -06 makes a dandy combination on moose and black bears.

I've hunted moose here in Norway with my 8mm-06 using Hornady 220gr at nearly 2600 f/s. These bullets hold up pretty good at that speed, but for the 8*68S they're too soft. Woodleigh have some 220gr bullets for the 325WSM, those are perfect in the 8*68 M

The 227 grain round nose was pretty much one of the standard 8mm Mauser loadings at one time. That or the "high velocity" option of the 154 grain spitzer point. Standard loading with the 227 was not much over 2200 fps I believe? But would stand corrected. All "over long for calibre" loadings are usually good killers on game. It should do well at 150 yards and under.

I've used 220 gr Hornady's in my 8 Rem Mag, 8x68, and 8mm-06 AI as well as the 8x57. They worked well in all of these, although I preferred the Rem 185 gr bullets in the 8x57. - dan "Intellectual truth is eternally one: moral or sentimental truth is a geographic and chronological accident that varies with the individual" R.F.
