I was looking for inputs on the 1 piece Leupold bases and rings versus the Talley 2 piece for mounting on a Browning BAR. I haven't ever scoped a BAR that I remember. But I acquired a Browning Mk II BAR in 270 Win and want to scope it up for my wife and daughter use with a 1 inch VX3 probably. It seems to me that most of the BARS I have seen previously had the one piece mounts on them with the screws for the rear windage adjustment. I looked around over at Midway and the Leupold 1 piece is there, as is the Talley steel 2 piece mounts. Both of course would take their mating 1 inch rings. Back in the 1980s or so I used the Redfield 1 piece steel bases on most everything. Which the Leupold is the same - I think . But I don't know about the quality of the newer ones. I have used lots of the Talley 2 piece mounts on various rifles. I always use the ring with the 2 upper ring screws which Talley calls detachable with screw lock. I have mine fixed . But I have known before that Talley says the fixed rings with the one larger upper screw are stronger. Does anybody have any input on that? I suspect either is fine for the 270. Thank you for your inputs.

And I suspect you're right. The Redfield-style Leupold will probably be a bit less money and is a time-proven system that serves well -- its windage adjustment is one of the few which will not tend to bend or crimp the scope since the front ring can rotate slightly in the dovetail to keep anything from binding. I've had a Redfield one-piece on a BAR .270 providing perfect service for nearly 40 years now.

Thank you Stonecreek. That is sure time proven. Back then when I had Carters scope them up when I bought the rifles, I think that must have been all they used was the once piece Redfield mounts. I know I must have had a half dozen rifles with that set up and I don't remember any failures. One which I sold to a friend with its original VX2 Leupold on it is still in that mount today and has not been rezeroed since about 1985. I just want to use steel. As opposed to the alloy mounts. I wasn't sure if the Leupold was still built like the Redfield from steel and is as stout. Same with the rings. Thanks again.

I have replaced almost all of my Redfield type bases with Picatinny rails. I have one or maybe two rifles left. Too many times I have discovered the rear screws loose. One time I found one in the field and tightened it there hard enough that the head broke off.

I don't have any of those 1 piece bases left either. In most applications I have used the Talley's for quite some time now. But there aren't a lot of options for the Browning BARs. Thank you AZ.

I have 4 bars and each one has either the steel warne or weaver bases and either qrw low leupold or qrw type warne, with VX3 scopes. Reason being why have an accurate rifle and expect it to be accurate with a great scope and inferior bases or rings. I also would like the ability of switching scopes between them and have the option of using those with iron sights NRA Life Member, ILL Rifle Assoc Life Member, Navy

I will give the Warnes a look while I am waiting. I don't have any iron sights on this one though. So I wont be using the quick release rings. Thanks.
