338 Win Mag, 230 gr FailSafe.

WstrnhuntrIt almost looks like the one behind the bush is the larger one. I can hear 'em Bugeling now!

Ill be using one of three variations of the 06, from 280 to 35 Whelen this year. Havent setteled on just one yet and probably wont until I take to the field.
Bullets, probably Accubonds or Hornadys. Maybe even some Speer Deep shoks or 35 cal 225 gn BT's. Got some range time comin up real quick that will settle that.

JarrodNever been elk hunting but I would use the same caliber I would use on any other elk.

MikeyB200gr. .300 Mag of some sort, or a 250gr. .338 WM. Either should do just fine.

Doubless7RM with Nosler 162 SBs... Shoot him in the engine room and he belongs to you. And the SB will exit to show you where he went.
I'd use one of the following and wouldn't have any doubts about the outcome:
270 Win, 150 TSX or Partition, or 140 Failsafe, 150 AFrame.
30.06, 168/180 TSX, 180 Partition or FS or AF
300 RUM, 180 TSX/Part./FS/AF or 200 Accub.
7RemMag, 160 Part./FS/AF
OR
270 Allen Mag, 169.5 grain ULD-RBBT Wildcat.
But, honestly, my first choice would be my Mathews bow and no more than a 40 yards shot!

As I stated above, my own preference is the 338 Win Mag. There is nothing wrong with either one of your choices either.

AtkinsonMy favored elk cartridge is the .338 Win. its a well balanced caliber and kills very well indeed...I have two loads I shoot in mine depending on the terrain I am hunting...A 210 Nosler at 3005 FPS and it penitrates as well as the 250 gr. in my experience and the 300 gr. Woodleigh at 2500 FPS for the thick stuff we have in Idaho....Works for me.

Alberta CanuckAt this range and angle, I believe any good bullet of 180 grs. or more in the '06 would do just fine. What I would probably use nyself is the 7x65R with one of the the heavier RWS H-Mantle bullets, because that's what I usually take elk hunting these days.
Would that pic by any chance have been taken from the Dean's Creek Viewing Station off of Highway 58 near Reedsport, Oregon? Looks like the same type of terrain and there's usually a lot of elk hangin' there in the tall grass...

I've shot several moose with .303 British and 30-06 including a couple of 1200 pounders, so pretty much any good middle cartridge should do.
My current moose gun is a .35 Whelen, so that would probably be what I'd be using.

I'll be hunting bulls with bow again this year, and looking to fill my cow tag with a firearm. Hoping to use my .44 mag handgun, or a .338 I just got, if a close shot isn't available.

I would wait a little until I get a clear shot, because I am certain that my .338WM with a 230-grain FS bullet, or even a 250-grain Partition will kill the one behind it, too.

seafire/B17GThose Elk are allas in a game preserve....
and they don't wander out of it...
However 5 or 6 yrs ago, some guys went in there at night and killed about 5 of those Elk for the Head and Antlers and left the rest....
They were arrested after they had had the heads mounted and were trying to sell them for about $2500.00 or more apiece....
so unfortunately, the elk in this thread are protected on a FEDERAL preserve!
Would be nice to see one like that in the cross hairs during Elk season....IN the WilD!!!!
cheers

N E 450 No2The 2 rifles I would most like to shoot a trophy elk with are either my 9,3x74R double or my 450/400 3 1/4". Next time I hunt elk in the thick that is what I will use. On my next elk hunt this Oct in WY where a long shot might present itself I plan to use my Blaser R 93 in 300 Win Mag.
