Aren't the .308 and .30-06 a huge overlap?

Hard luck.
I like your 3 very well.
But if I were to do a 3 rifle batery for the lower 48,
.257 Roberts
.308 win
35 Whelen.
If you shoot at ranges of 300 yards and in that would be all you would need.
Not all "I" would want but all I would need.
It reall would be a decent set for canada and alaska too, But I would not be real comfortable going after a big bear with the whelen.
But it would do in a pich.

A three rifle centerfire rifle battery for me:
22-250
270
9.3x64 Brenneke
This is currently what I have except the addition of 338-06.

A more practical approach would be:
223
30-06
375 H&H

I could take either list and hunt anything, anywhere. The only thing that would possibly be lacking would be the 9.3 or 375 for elephant. But they both would work I think, but I do not have any actual elephant experience, nor do I ever plan to.

The only other firearms I would add are:
22LR
12ga shotgun with chokes
44 mag pistol.

So in reality I could get by with six firearms. Eeker

Please don't tell my wife. diggin

Three rifles?

.22lr.
7x57R
.470 Capstick.

That and a decent shotgun would cover anything I'm likely to hunt.

Cheers, Dave.

A 35 Whelen and keep the change.

I would rather have one scoped and one with iron sights in some allround caliber than two scoped in very different calibers.

I just can't narrow it down to three:

.22rf
22-250
.243
.270
300WSM
& as I stated in another thread: 7.62x51 for "social" occasions.

Guys, I was trying to be pratical for me. I know I will never hunt Big bear or moose again. I'm too old and physically beat up. No I'm not trying to publish anything. My calibers overlap with a lot of other good ones.. I hate to get into actions, I have a semi-auto a lever gun and a bolt gun. and reload for all three. I've probably owned and used 500 or 600 rifles in the past 60 yrs but it has come down to these three for me.
I should have added a .22 lr and a 12 gage but I don"t use them much anymore.
Thank all of you for sharing with me.

Mine is an easy choice as all I have is 3 rifles.

257 Wby
30-06
338-378 Wby

Those will pretty much cover anything on earth if it's legal to use a 338 cal bullet or less.

Just last week I completed my own set of three with the addition of #3 below:

22LR CZ452 American
270Win Wthby Vanguard Sporter
375H&H CZ 550 American Safari

Of course also in the safe is a Win 1300 and a Citori White Lightning, both in 12g, but we won't count those towards the allowable limit.

I know I'll never get to hunt African game, so mine would be limited to North America as follows.

22 rimfire
257 Wby Mag
35 Whelen

I reload and I have some low, medium, and high velocity rounds for the .257 Wby that can cover a big gap from varmints to Elk.

My three, at the moment, list as follows:

1. Ruger 10/22 22lr semi auto for plinking and smaller vermin
2. Rem Model 700 SPS 22-250 Rem for predator calling
3. Tikka T3 Lite .270 WSM for everything else I hunt at the moment (deer, hopefully a moose next year, and an Elk within 5 years!)

I someday may want to add say a .416 Rigby, or a .375 H&H for the big stuff if I ever get to hunt any of the big beasts of Africa.

Three rifle battery? Hell, there was a time when I could only afford one rifle! It was a "sporterized" Springfield 03 in '06. Since then I've added the 300 Weatherby Mag, 338 Win Mag, 375 H&H, 257 Robts, 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen and 9.3x62. All bolt guns. To tell you the truth, I'm not sure what I've got in my safe these days. Good thing these are just my sportin' arms. If it were a matter of self defense, I'd be shot dead before I decided which one to choose!

I only have 3
22LR Stirling bolt action
338 Win Mag Ruger M77 mk1 with new Lothar Walther barrel
505 Gibbs custom rifle built on a Granite Mountain Arms action

But I am working on getting a 416 Rigby based on a Dakota 76 action. I have the action, but the finished rifle will still be about 12 months away. After that I will probably get another .25/06 to replace the one I sold some years ago. And after that there are plenty on the wish list.
