What ideas have you for one of these utility guns? Not interested in negatives. I'm undecided on stock. Laminated or synthetic? Barrel stainless or c/m? Caliber is 9.3X62, 9.3X64 or 400 Whelen. Probably will be a 9.3X62 and a 400 Whelen later. All to start from the 1917 Enfield. I want the rear sights and deep belly of the magazine. The action I think is long enough for long bullets seated out. I want the scout scope and three point sling mounts with flush mount swivels. I have used the Ching sling and have two in use now. One from Galco and a synthetic one from Wilderness I think. Any other features that will be handy. I use a butt stock pack with cartridge loops but am open to suggestions about ammo carry. I do like the pack as I carry a minimum sized survival kit and parts there. Any ideas on front sight? Was thinking white line post with Tritium and protected with wings a la military. Any other features that would be handy. No kitchen sinks please. Your positive thoughts? Thanks Packrattusnongratus

Laminated - it's warmer, quieter, and less expensive than a better quality synthetic.
Stainless - unless you are going to coat the entire barreled action with some exotic weather-resistant finish.
I'd be strongly tempted to stay with the 30'06 chambering but of the options you list I'd go with 9.3x62.
My 'survival kit' is larger than can be strapped to a buttstock, so I'd recommend a Galco buttcuff or Brockman's screw-on cartridge holder for spare ammo.
For a hell for sturdy front sight it's hard to beat the original 1917 sight. Otherwise you could mount a front sight - tritium or fiberoptic even - on the front end of your scout scope mount.

Find a Steyr Scout in 376. They were selling for around a $1000 for a while and you might still find one. It has all the goodies you are thinking about in an extremely accurate factory rifle. Sorry mine's not for sale............DJ

I gotta agree with djpantles for a factory gun. However, I have an "ugly gun" made up off a VZ24 action in 9.3x62mm (PacNor Barrel) that probably more nearly fits your requirement, and it still comes in for less than a Steyr Scout. You cannot go wrong with the 9.3x63mm!!!!!!

I do admit its just about perfect. Its a douglas barrel, with a gold bead front post. A corelite stock and all the metal coated with metal-life finish. Its a 22" barrel, with 2.5x leupold scout scope with duplex reticle.

My perfered load has been the 286gr Nosler partition @ just over 2400fps. I'm looking forward to trying some of the barnes TSX in this caliber this summer. Open sights print dead on at 25 and 100 yards with 100 yard groups averaging around 2.5-3 inches. The scout scope is zeroed at 200 yards, leaving it 3" high at 100 and almost 12" low at 300 yards. This is pretty much as far as I would feel comfortable shooting it at game anyway. At 300 yards I can shoot some pretty decent groups when using a 10" orange circle, groups of 5-7 inches are the norm. I regularly practice with cardboard cutouts and regular vital hits on the moose sized target are th norm. Its a mattress box that I cut out in the shape of a moose, works pretty good for off hand practice.
